Sorry to disagree but I don't see any other ballad singer who impresses me as much as Ayu. As to quality of ballads there is not only voice but lyrics, composition and style, emotion and originality. It has to be a whole package. And in my opinion Ayu has them all. She has a lot of gems which are ballads, apart from HEAVEN. Listen to Will, Memorial Address or Pride and you'll see how much her vocals have improved since A Song for XX. Plus the emotion she manages to convey into her ballads are simply stunning are unbelievable. And the lyrics are so well placed to fit the mood and theme.
Hikki's ballads are also extremely well made. They have a unique sound them, giving them a shine. Lyrics and vocals fit perfectly to the music. Listen to Passion to see what I mean.
Mika well honestly her songs send me to sleep but anyhow... for some they find them enjoyable.
Ai has a long way to go before she can get to the quality of Hikki or Ayu. Sure she does have a handful of quality ballads... Planetarium, Kingyo Hanabi and Daisuki da yo come into my mind but personally I think her most popular songs are upbeat ones and she has not sung enough ballads to get a name for singing ballads when other arists have years of ballads in their history. It's unfair yes but hopefully next year she'll sing more ballads and gain more popularity with ballads |

i agree with Rinoa, ai has a long way to go.
i don't think ayu is the best, but it is really amazing when you compare her early works (poker face) to some of her recent works (Pride). she has really improved with her vocals. but personally, i like her old lyrics, composition and style better. all and all, ayu and hikki definitly earned their title and spots on the chart. |

Well oddly enough her upbeat music is much more popular. I think her ballads have a dramatic quality and her voice is highly superior than m any of those artists. But I don't think she gets enough attention sadly enough |

That is so true albeit saddening. I was looking at the top 100 singles of 2004 and all her ballads ranked very low in relation to her more upbeat songs. Amaenbo barely made it in the top 100.... and Amaenbo in my opinion is one her best ballads minus the random music part at the end....
I'm quite sure the reason why her ballads dont get as much attention is because it is the upbeat cute songs that shot her to fame... |

| ^ Lol actually I was talking about Hitomi Shimatani but I suppose the same can be applied to Ai. Ai's popularity is linked with cute and hyper songs. |

she deservs that position...
and I think that if she didn't released so many HAPPY singles [Smily, Happy Days, Sakuranbo] and released more ballads [Neko ni Fuusen, Natsuzora, 5a.m. , Planetarim -*o*~-] she would be in a higher position!! ^^
and as for the other names in there...
I can tell [for my point of view] that the competition was reealy good...
names like Hamasaki Ayumi [she has so many that is hard to pic one], Nakashima Mika [Sakurairo Maukoro, Yuki no Hana...], ELT [Fragile -love-], MISIA [I've heard only one song...but damn...she has an amazing voice] as for the others...some I don't know and some of them I think she could beat!!! |

I think Ayu's #1 spot is well deserved. Her ballads are beautiful, I love listening to them. But I do also love Ai's ballads, my favorite songs of hers are all ballads
I've only listened to a few songs by Shibasaki Kou. I love her voice |

| Thanks 4 the translations horizon180 ^_^ I thought Ai would be higher than that...but atleast she made the chart and yeah I guess Eyn is right she didn't produce many ballads this year and I wasn't too fond of her latest song.....but well done to Ai anyway! |

I think aiko deserved her spot. She's produced some incredible ballads - Star, Eriashi, and Mikuni Eki are some of my personal favorites. I think you all should check them out before saying things like ,"Are her ballads REALLY that good?" and stuff. She's got talent.
And I agree with Rinoa. The thing is, it's already quite an honor to be featured on one of these lists - especially if you think about the HUGE number of artists in Japan that have, at one time or another, released a great ballad. Like Holly said, what about Hitomi Shimatani? BoA's ballads aren't too shabby either - Every Heart at least should have gotten her a spot on the list, not to mention Jewel Song, Everlasting, etc. Personally, I'm thrilled to see Ai on the list at all. |
