This has been bugging me for awhile now.
I am going to imports albums and dvds only in the Japanese version but I rather do singles in Overseas version because they are about half the price.
What i want to know is what is the differnce between the two besides the region encoding of the dvd?
What I am going to do is import all of Ai's singles and i can save over $80 importing the ones i can in Overseas versions.
Is the differnce in the cases and what is incluided? |

Besides region there is NO DIFFERENCE quality-wise. There maybe a slip of translation in chinese/korean (depending on where it is sold). Japanese version usually have first press extras, etc., but if you've missed out on all those goodies, save yourself some money and go with overseas vers.
The difference between Overseas and Japanese versions is that overseas versions were manufactured in the selected territory by a subsidiary of the parent record company to be distributed in that territory (although in some cases an artist can be signed to a record company with a dif name overseas ie. Gackt.) Japanese versions are manufactured and distributed in Japan. Japanese releases can be imported worldwide, but for obvious price differences, Overseas releases cannot be imported and sold in Japan. In some cases, the cover art of OVS or JPN ver are dif, but that will obviously be apparent when shopping. Depending on the album, JPN first press may be OVS reg, etc, or OVS may have bonus tracks JPN ver does not have.
Oh, and when buying OVS ver, always buy from a trusted online store such as YesAsia, or a trusted e-bay seller. Know how to spot bootlegs and avoid them at all cost. People often mark these as "official asian releases", when they are just homeburned cd-rs... |

Thanks. I have changed my mind on getting over seas versiosn of Ai's cds and going to go with the Japanese versions. I will probably get overseas versions for people like Koda Kumi, BoA and YUKI.

First press usually gives you a chance to get little extras with your CD that you won't get later on when it's been released for a while. These are like bonuses for the people who buy the CD first. Take Ai's LOVE COOK release for an example of this. A limited number of copies will come with either a picturebook, illustrated by Ai, or a photobook of Ai. After these run out, you can't order them anymore.
I hope that helped. |

just to clear it up on madgirlslovesong's explanation. for most first press release, they keep making it even after all the first press. versions are gone. take ai's singles. all her limited editions are gone, but you can still buy them. the only differences is that you will no longer get the bonus materials that are included in the first press.
for LOVE COOK's picture and photo books version, i'm not sure if they'll stop producing these two cd covers after all the first press are gone. can anyone confirm this? |

Yes there is some small difference for the album cover. Besides that the oversea version of Avex Trax stuff is manufactured at Taiwan. So it comes with lyrics in chinese and some other stuff you can't find at the Japan Version. For the DVD, Overseas version DVD is region 3 coz its manufactured in Taiwan while the Japanese version is region 3. |

yep, japan version cd will work in your cd player, computer, etc.
it's the dvd that won't, because japan dvd are region 2 and in north america, we use region 1 dvd. (oversea version dvd wouldn't work either, because they're region 3) |

I was oblivious to the fact that such region codes existed for DVD's... everything works with my DVD player... then I remind myself that I bought my DVD player when they first came out... and I don't think region coding was any much of a problem back then... if it even existed...
I don't think they even print the limited edition covers anymore... I've surely never seen it around... but the bonuses are gone for sure >_>
I always buy Overseas version because I lack money. Oh... money woes. |

Well, Korean Versions of Japanese CDs are being sold on sites like YesAsia. Are those version are allowed in this thread.
I know with my Korean Version of BoA's "Love&Honesty" album came with 5 picture cards, but no DVD like the Overseas and Japan Version. CD and booklet was still the same though. Quality was still good. It also came with a Korean translation slip also. My Korean Version of Namie Amuro's "Queen of Hip Pop" did not come with the special stickers or anything like the Overseas or Japan Version. All it came with was a newspaper thing, and Korean translation slip. Quality still good. |
