For one I can not stand her voice.. Its so annoying...
The song Theme of A-nation 03' would rule if her voice didnt ruin it.
Also.. not to be shallow.. But i will be... I think her face is the ugliest thing ever.. Her eyes are HUGE.. and her nose is pointy and.. wtf... its the UGLIEST nose ever...... No wonder her voice is so nasaly.
But dont get me wrong.. If she had a pretty voice I would like her, despite her looks. Just when I see her I kind of gag.

I picked Ayumi because I like her better.

Ayumi Hamasaki.. its like.. tiny and goes to a point.. its not round like most asians...
I think she had like 500000 surgeries.. like i beleive gackt did. |

OK, on paper, Ayu wins hands down.
But there is no way I would vote Ayumi over Ai... not a chance...

Personally, i think that Ayu sings for commerical purpose. For those who know well bout Ayu's background (or it said to be rumours) then you shud know the reason why she becomes a singer.
To be honest, i prefer Ai. Because of her talent, undoubtedly. And she makes all the music. Her songs are really worth to listen.  |

commercial purpose? oh . u mean she always sing for panasonic stuff etc? ( my small bro is a ayu fan and i saw most of his ayu PV which he keep is ayu singing for advertisment of panasonic, and some beauty company) |

Woah. I'm seriously offended by some poster's comments. Ayu is ugly and has a pointy nose? How more immature can it get? If you don't like her music or her style fine but don't go around calling her ugly because she's definately one of the most gorgeous females around. And big eyes? Honestly it's just that her eyes are more european looking. It doesn't mean they are ugly. My eyes are big but I don't consider them ugly just because they're not tiny.
Also this surgery thing is nonsense. See a photo of her when she was a teenager and now. You won't see much of a difference. It could be she did a surgery but it's highly improbable for me. And if she did I don't see what's so awful in doing a surgery. Many Amercian artists do it.
Also Ayu has commercial endorsements and thus her songs end up being well.. commercialised. Doesn't mean they're not meaningful or anything. I like her panasonic CMs.
No avex is not trying to kick Ayu out since she's the female artist which gains most money (yes even more than Ai). |

Whoa......how do I even start!?
* Well, I definitely like Ayu's music type better (I just like rock, sorry), but Ai's music is THE most catchy music I've ever heard. Some of her stuff can stay stuck in your head for weeks on end!
* Ai's voice is better. For a fact. Ayu is a good singer...until she tries to reach notes out of her range, which she always does. And Ai has a really, REALLY high voice (I think the highest I've heard so far), but she can still reach some decent low notes; Ai has a pretty good range!
* I love most of Ayu's style, as far as her outfits and such goes. (Heh, I love that strange outfit she's got on in "Evolution".) Ai's style is just average, in my opinion.
* Ayu is TECHNICALLY more popular (*sorry*). And this is more than likely because she has been around, like, twice as long as Ai has, lol. But, either way, those are the facts.
* Although I mentioned above that Ayu's style in clothing is better, I think Ai is prettier. She's got such a cute, baby face. I honestly don't see why everybody thinks Ayu is so beautiful (eh, I guess I caaannnn - the barbie doll look). I mean, she IS very, very pretty, but not the gorgeous model they keep trying to make her be. She's a pretty woman, but we also have to take into account:
1. Her numerous surgeries she's obviously had.
2. You can tell she's wearing lots of stage and hollywood make-up half the time.
Also, she has those certain features - it's hard to explain. Some people find those "barbie doll" aspects incredibly gorgeous, while others think they look strange, fake, etc., and it repulses them... so that part of her just depends on what you think. In my opinion...well, I hate that look. Just do. (And yet I am going to contradict myself here because I still think that Ayumi is, in some ways, real pretty, even though I just hate those barbie features.)
* Okay, last but not least, I wanted to mention that I have noticed that a lot of Ayu's fans come strictly from commerical and promotion. In other words, her fans become fans because they think they should be, because everybody else thinks so - they are just jumping on the bandwagon. Ai's fans are plainly fans, 'cause either you like Ai or you don't. She hasn't really become one of those celebrities where you can dish out crap work to the public and it will still make it to the very top of the charts, not yet. Ayu, on the other hand, has had some great albums, but she's also had terrible ones, in my opinion, but they still got her ahead of everyone else in the buisness.
Sooooo, what that means is that Ai could actually be thought to have better music, even if Ayu is higher in the popularity ratings, with more [?better?] albums. So, until Ai gets a little more popular with the majority of people, no one can say for sure who's music people, in general, prefer...
Ayumi Hamsaki's score = 3
Ai Otsuka's score = 2
Tie = 1
N/A = 1
...Ayumi is winning in the duel, according to my calculations, but if Ai gets a little more promotion for some more hardcore fans, she'll be just as good as the famous Ayu, and maybe even better...
annnndd, if you consider this: Ai is still new to the singing scene! She's already doing as well in the first few years of her career as Ayu is after her ENTIRE career!
So, I must say, even if Ayu is better now, Ai is FAR more progressive! 
Lol, they BOTH win!!!! (Sorry for being so wishy-washy, but it was really hard to say one of them was better than the other because they are two of my favorite artists.)
Buuttt, if I must choose, overall...
I have loved Ayu and her music for such a long time, (before Ai was even out) since she made it into the singing career so unexpecting after she'd lost hope on some things in her life - *kind of an inspiration to me with MY pursue of a singing career*...... so... go, Ayu!
*EEE... pleeze don't kill me; I still love Ai!*

I really see your point, Rinoa.
I mean, I don't like that Ayu has gotten so many surgeries that she doesn't even look like the Japanese person she is anymore (hah - it's true, sorry!), but people aaallllll over the world are getting surgery for many, many reasons, so Ayu should not become a minority, or anything.
I think what some people were trying to say was that she didn't need to get them. At least, not as many as she did. (I mean, her nose IS really pointy and kind of strange looking and toyed with now.  I thought she was gorgerous BEFORE the surgeries!) She was trying to look prettier, but if she gets any more surgeries it'll just make it all SO much worse....

But dont get me wrong.. If she had a pretty voice I would like her, despite her looks. Just when I see her I kind of gag. fair enough. but i'll just like to say that if at first i didn't fight against my ears (which found ai's voice way too sharp and perky) and gave her chance after chance by listening to her other songs, i wouldn't be the fan that i am today. course, now that i've gotten used to her vocals, i don't really find that sharp perky feeling when listening to her songs.
which ayu songs did you listen to? cause i know till this day i still can't stand ayu singing high notes from her early careers. it seems like you've heard of songs from the RAINBOW album and didn't like her vocals there. maybe you can try listening to songs from "I am...", "MY STORY" or her latest singles. |

Just a quick note, any surgery Ayu had, she must have had as an eight year old because her face isn't much different than when she was younger besides the baby fat or whatever...
  
Not to start anything... but have you guys seen Ai's younger pictures? If anyone, I would accuse her of having something done.
But I'm not saying she did. I'm not even accusing... I just have to say something when Ayu gets accused of being a plastic face because I seriously doubt she is, and until I am proven wrong.. and when I say proven I mean PROVEN not SHOWN becuase I've done enough of my own research to come to my own conclusion.. until I'm proven wrong, I won't believe that Ayu had her face done.
And I think it's very rude to accusing her of being fake like that.  |

I'm not saying she's fake, I'm saying, if she keeps up this trend, she WILL be fake...
Ayumi has definitely (just look at her! or even look it up somewhere online - sorry, I won't do it [because I'm too lazy, lol] at this time) had at least two surgeries: one on her eyes - to make them rounder and to get 'double eyelids' - and one on her nose - to make it less round and not as large, or whatever.
You cannot deny those two surgeries (at least not the one with her eyes - seriously)... but I will not say she had anymore because I, honestly, have NO clue, whatsoever.
So, once again, I am not saying Ayu is fake!!! (It's not like she's gotten breast implants, lol - YET - it's just a surgery or two.) I am just saying she's...... not completely natural? And she paints her face up sometimes... she doesn't need all that.
I am not even trying to put Ayumi down or anything. Like I said, I am a very big fan of her, but I can admit she's had something done with her face. 
And you know what? I don't care about it. It really doesn't matter; why should it matter? If she had a surgery, if she didn't...... whatever.
Either you think she's pretty now, or you think she WAS pretty, or both, or never, or whatEVER. It's not like getting surgery to try and look better, in this superficial world, is unbelievable, let alone unaccepted, or even, nowadays, unexpected (it's not to most), so, yeah... 
...why do some people get so offended when they hear people talking about their fav. celebrities getting work done? Because they say they're fake? Weeelllll, no one said (that I read - forgive me if there is an exception here) Ayumi was fake, so let's save the debates, comebacks, and offensive and defensive remarks for whenever somebody straight-up says, 'AYUMI IS A DISGUSTING, FAKE, PLASTIC WOMAN!!!' (<----- Example of text - I repeat, that was just an example. Back down, peoples, back down!)

Now, everybody go listen to some good old-fashioned Ai Otsuka music... or Ayumi music... or Hikki or BoA or Hitomi or Maaya S. or Gackt or Hyde (*fangirly squeal* - or Shotaro Morikubo <<<<<3333 ) ...or whatever it is you listen to, and stop worrying so much about these poor celebrities personal lives; give them some privacy!!!!

There's no factual proof that Ayumi got surgery. Her eyes were big when she was younger, they are still big now.
these two images are almost from the same angle. From what I see, she has the same nose, maybe more makeup in the 2005 picture, and her eyes are the same.
Ayu's commercialize? Ai receives the same amount of promotion through commericals, maybe even more than Ayu. These kind of things are avex's marketing plans, you know, because they're a company that wants money.
I like Ayu's voice better than Ai's, but I think Ai's good composer. I still like Ayu more because she's the first jpop artist I've ever listen to and I'm her die-hard fan. But in the Ai vs Ayu debate, it's kind of hard to compare them....
For example, their goals. Ai has wanted to become a singer from very young age, and as far as I know, came from a pretty regular family. Ayu was raised by a single mum who didn't really care, and started modeling at a very young age because she needed money to go to school. Ayu was discovered by Max Matsuura during the days after she dropped out of high school, and agreed to attend vocal lessons because she didn't have anything to do. Her lyric-writing came from the fact that when she wrote to Max Matsuura from New York, she had trouble expressing herself, so she wrote in poetic verses, and that's why Matsuura suggested that she start to write lyrics. Ai had a very determined goal in mind, whereas Ayumi didn't. Sure, Ayumi wasn't popular from her second single, but in the long wrong she was still very popular. Ayu didn't rise fast, but she stayed when she rose.
Music-wise, their music are very different. I mean, I can imagine Ayu singing Cherish and some of Ai's ballads, but Ayu isn't very good at singing happy songs.
I think it's easier to compare Ai and Ayu than Ayu and Hikki, but Ai and Ayu are in the same label, so they can't really be marketed against each other.
