Ok AI fans it's time to be honest. A true duel will begin. Two of the greatest female jpop artists. Ayumi Hamasaki and Ai Otuska. Better known as Ayu and Ai. But Ayumi is considered the greatest female j-pop artists in Japan now even though AI is rising to the top of the charts. Ayumi has had a longer career with more albums and singles under her belt but it only took AI two singls with Sakuranbo (さくらんぼ, Cherry). Before you have an all out battle fans... I would like to provide you with info on Ayu and Ai before you duel and to let you know I am an AI fan and still do not know who the top female jpop artist is. So DUEL Mad !!!!

Ayumi Hamasaki:

She is the first Japanese artist to have her first original six studio albums top the charts.

Well she hasn't been in the industry as long as Ayu but still very respectable and a great artists. Well maybe you can help figure out the answer Ai fans..or just start attacking me for comparing ai or ayu...well what ever. LET THE DUEL BEGIN

I honestly can't find a way to compare the two. Ai hasn't been around nearly as long as Ayu and besides their styles/talents are quite different. I like them both for different reasons. They're both awesome in their own right.

With that in mind, I think I will abstain from voting and getting in the middle of what is probably going to end up becoming a huge flame war. Also, what about Hikki? Doesn't she at least deserve a nomination?

Ugh, really difficult choice. I love both artists so much, but I went and gave my vote to Ayumi. However, it might depend on my mood and who I am currently obsessed about this particular day. Boogie

Honestly right now Ayu is better. She's got the title of Queen for years now and I don't see how you can compare her with Ai, who's just started. You cannot compare artists that way. It's hard to predict how artists will rise to the top and if they will eventually rise. Look at Kumi who all of a sudden has become a big favourite amongst the Japanese when in 2000 when she made her debut pretty much no one cared about her.

I agree with madgirlslovesong. Ai has been compared with Ayu for ages when they're completely different. You cannot really compare Sakuranbo with M. (Their biggest hits)

Ai is a talented artist who bases her image on being cute, sweet and has songs centred on love while Ayu has all those multiple images but eventually her music takes a philosophical twist with some random songs being simply odd. They are both excellent artists with a lot of talent but cannot really be compared.

I'd shall dodge also. Ive listened to alot of Ayus songs and never really liked them. Ai is so much better. Now a choice between Ai and Eri Nobuchika would be tough for me.

I choose Ai Otsuka. I dun really like Ayumi too much, especially her latest single out... Shifty

Is it true that Avex are trying to kick Ayu out so Ai can replace her? I heard that from a friend who seems to have more knowledge then i do of both the artist.

i vote for ai otsuka. i love ayu old songs such as evolution, moments, fly high ETC but i dislike those current songs. its not kinda my cup of tea anymore. ai otsuka songs is more lively and shes cute, so i vote her. btw topic starter, u really cannot compare ayu with ai-cha. ayu single usually sell 1million copy but ai-chan latest single( planetarium) din`t sell 1million copy. so theres a huge gap between them. (ayu fan boy please dun flame me)

I gotta vote for Ayumi. Though right now Ai is better (Planetarium and Cherish are way better than Bold & Delicious and Pride) Smile

But Ayumi's best song (Moments) is better than all of Ai's songs Boogie

i voted for ayu because she is like my fav artist rite now
ai really doesn't have the creditials to be pitted against ayu their styles are so different
i agree with madgirlslovesong that hikki should be included in this, although all 3 of their styles are sooooooo completely different

the most common debate i've seen is "ayu vs. ai vs. hikki" why is that? i get the whole duel about britney and christina, but these three? the only common i find between these 3 artists is that they're all female (hahaha), talented, and enjoy producing great music.

currently i'm a big ai fan (ai > ayu + hikki) but ayu have left a mark that no artist (even ai) can ever replace, i admire her and to me she's a legend, one of a kind. it's not only ayu's music and talent, but everything that made her ayu that made me a fan in the first place. she's managed to do something that few artists had achieved. although i'm not a big big fan now, i still have to say that she's, if not the best, one of the best artist in music industry.

For me asking about Hikki, I think it was partially reflex. It really is such a common debate. Giggle

Honestly though, these are three of the most promoted & most popular artists right now. Hikki and Ayu have both been around for quite some time, so they've earned major fanbases. Their styles are remarkably different, yet they're competing in the same market, so they're always going to be compared. (Especially by fans who like one and dislike the other.)

As for the reason that Ai is suddenly being thrown into these competitions, well, she's had remarkble success in the short amount of time that she's been in the industry. Also I think another major reason is because she's on the same label as Ayu and Avex has been doing quite a bit to market her. A lot of people feel like they're prepping her to be "Ayu's replacement." (Not my opinion, but I've heard it many times.)

At least this is my take on the whole thing.
