Title: 1リットルの涙, 1 Litre of Tears
Genre: Drama, Romance, Disease
TV Station: Fuji TV
Episodes: 11
Broadcasting Period: 11th October 2005 21:00
Music Producer: Susumu Ueda
Theme Songs: Only Human - K
Konayuki - Remioromen
March 9 - Remioromen Cast: Official Site
Synopsis:
This dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called Spinocerebellar Degeneration when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.
The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend.
Review:
To me, this was one of the best doramas of 2005, mainly because the reality of this story has enlightened me. I realized that my life is not that tough compared to those who are suffering from an incurable disease. “1 Litre of Tears” stood out for a reason: it is not because Aya was upset because of her disease, she was touched by the love and patience she received from her friends and family. I was amazed by the braveness with which she chose to live her life, as a strong girl who was only 15 years old, yet managed to face her cruel fate with a positive outlook, and tried her best to do whatever she could by herself.
For those dorama fans who loved “Beautiful Life” that starred Takuya Kimura & Tokiwa Takako, I’d bet you guys will appreciate this story too. I can feel the power of the love from her family and friends in this story, and encouraged me to be positive in my life even though there may be many difficulties and problems. I hope there will be somebody who is willing to translate the original diary by Kito Aya sold in Japan because she has a lot of meaningful words in her diary. This story contains both sadness and love, and I hope you guys will love this dorama as much as I did. |

I watched this after a friends recommendation... It was the first drama that literally moved me to tears... the second half of episode 10 really got to me.
It was very different, because with your normal drama, things always get better at the end, no matter how bad things are at the start, however, it was safe to assume that this was not the case for this drama... There were times in the drama in which it was just so sad and I felt so much pity for Aya that I thought 'Maybe somehow she doesn't die in the end...'... But of course, that was futile of me...
The only thing that irks me is that when Haruto was reading her journal at the last episode, he read a line in which Aya wrote '... I want someone to hug me...' or something along those lines, Haruto should've have hugged her!!!! Not only would it make Aya happy, but it would bring a sense of closure to the shrouded topic that is of the relationship of Aya and Haruto!!
The songs are so nice too.... Konayuki always plays at the most appropiate times... and Only Human just makes me feel so sad.... |

You are so right! During the final episode I just wanted him to hug her. She needed a hug but he just sat next to her crying. Gah. I was a bit annoyed.
Anyway, this drama was really something. We all pretty much knew what the ending would be like, but the disease's progression and Aya's journey from being a normal girl to "disabled" was interesting to watch. I've never heard of that disease before, and I can't believe that some people are inflincted with it. What makes it worse is that it's incurable. I can't fathom what went through Aya's head when she was told that slowly she would lose control of her body and she will never recover. One thing's for sure though, I don't think I would be able to live with the strength and courage she did. I would be pretty depressed for sure.
What I like about this drama was that it wasn't the typical "this girl got a disease now feel sorry for her and cry for her". It was more like a "this girl got a disease. try to live like she did." People take advantage of the smallest things. Being able to eat and walk to talk. Eventually, Aya couldn't do any of that, but she wanted to overcome her disease and then, help others like her. She lived her life to the fullest, and that's something healthy people tend not to do. It's sad. |

they did a good job with this drama
it really moves people's hearts i think and well it's very real because it is based on a true story
often times i found it so hard to watch because it was so real, but you just can't turn it off because it's so real as well haha i don't know haha i'm going in circles..... but i'd give this drama a 9/10 |

on behalf of kioku fansubs, i want to thank all of u who downloaded our fansub of this series. we love this series to bits which is why the team stayed up nights to finish every episode within a few days of it being aired.
as for its comparison with "beautiful life" i think that a more apt comparative would be the multi award winning "sekai no chuushin de, ai wo sakebu" (drama wiki info). infact in the online drama fans community, and even in japanese media, there was a lot of comparison of ichi ritoru with sekaichu. perosnally, i can see the similarity but sekaichu was a story of saku and aki (the two main characters) whereas 1 ritoru no namida is more a story of aya and all the people around her, especially her family and her relationship with asou-kun and perhaps even the doctor mizuno-sensei. i also personally liked the passage of time in the series which is set over ~10yrs. there is also a film based on the book by kitou shioka (the mother of kitou aya whose story this is) which will be coming out on dvd soon. the actors are different from the tv series however. if u liked this series, keep your eyes out for the spring special mini series 'ai to shi wo mitsumete' (drama wiki info) which is also a similar style of drama.
also fans of sekaichu should chk out this season's byakuyakou (drama wiki info)
for all torrent and clubbox links to 1 litre of tears, chk out the kioku website here.

it's a reeeally heart-warming & touching drama. it's out to make us cry !! the use of Remioromen's songs in it does make the drama even more memorable in my opinion! i love Konayuki now and whenever i hear it i'll think of Aya . |
