Title: 電車男 (Train Man), Densha Otoko
Genre: Romance, Comedy
TV Station: Fuji TV
Episodes: 11
Year: 2005
Theme Songs: Cast: Official Site
Synopsis:
This drama is based on a true love story of an otaku and a beautiful rich lady. Aoyama Saori, working as an office lady at a multinational company, gets into trouble with a drunkard on a train. She's saved by Yamada Tsuyoshi, who is a 100% otaku. As a form of appreciation, Saori sends Tsuyoshi Hermes teacups. Having no experience with the opposite sex, Tsuyoshi decides to ask for help on the Aladdin Channel BBS on how to interact with Saori...
My opinion:
I really like this drama because it's based on a true love story. We all know about people dating online and stuff, but this one is totally different, it's about an otaku seeking help online while the girl he wants to date know nothing about internet or the BBS he's using at all. Being an otaku means he has pretty much zero social skills, but by getting help from an internet BBS, he managed to win the girl in the end.
The greatest selling point of this drama is probably the true story behinds it. It's not some story made up by some crazy script writer. Somewhere in Japan now, the "real" Densha Otoko and Hermes is going out together!
LVXS sent me a picture of the "rumoured" Densha and Hermes, but nobody knows for sure. If you are wondering which BBS Densha used for getting advice, it's one of the hottest site in Japan called 2Channel (sounds familiar? ). The BBS in Japan works a little different compared to forum like this one. You can put in any username you prefer or stay anonymous, i.e. no registration. Each topic has 1000 replies limit, you'll know about this fact when you watch the drama.
Here's a website that has the log of Densha seeking help in his BBS topic, spanning 3 months long. It's all in Japanese so I doubt it will be much use to you guys. Still, it's amazing such resources exists for you to explore the crossover between drama and reality!
I give this drama 8.5/10!

lol, i loved densha otoko!!
yeah, it is based on a true story which is why it became so popular... however i have some insider gossip fresh from japan ^_^
although it became famous at first, and now the whole being an otaku is really popular, akihabara, the otaku paradise of tokyo city, a place where otaku hang out, has become one of the most popular destinations in japan, even 2channel reported a hits boom after the show started airing, and there have even been a string of copycat densha otokos... but certain critics of the show and concurrently now a lot of people, are saying that although great entertainment, it was a tad bit unrealistc, even though it was based on a true story, and that was because the producers went overboard with ito misaki's character of hermes. but nonetheless, it was last year's biggest summer 'thing' and it even spawned a movie...
i have to say, i do kind of prefer the movie... it's a more believable version of the story. there are a few cameos in the movie by actors who had parts in the tv series, that was fun to watch.
movie info:
Name: Densha Otoko [2005]
Director: Masanori Murakami
Cast:
Takayuki Yamada: Densha Otoko [guy from sekai no chuushin de, ai wo sakebu]
Miki Nakatani: Hermes
the film was great, i remember watching the movie, and when it got to the part where they were returning from their first dinner together and he walks ahead and loses her in the crowd, and she grabs on to his sleeve and says: "daijoubu, chanto tsukandemasu kara.." (It's ok, I'll be holding on to you now) ... i remembered that scene from the series and it cracked me up... oh and the scene in the tea shop when everyone goes to buy BENOIST tea, classic!
I'll give the series a 8.5/10 and the movie a 9/10
PS. eyn, Densha Otoko has 11 episodes + 1 Special (extended ending) |

hahah yay!!
DENSHA!! KITAAAAAAA!!~~~
it's true that i think most people who watched this series or have read about this story have been moved by it haha most people really love it!!
it's like a real life fantasy almost haha even if the drama was a bit more exaggerated than what might have really happened!!
from what i've seen from my friend's reactions to watching this series, people were either really moved by it or really didn't like the otaku-ness hahaha
i find myself in the position of being moved by it haha cause sometimes i feel like a yamada tsuyoshi inside OTL
but all in all i think it was a great drama, i've yet to watch the movie still but i'd give the drama a 9.5/10!!!
i'd encourage many to watch it hahaha |

After reading the book, I must conclude that it's a pretty satisfying story. The dorama is also pretty well acted out. Cute guy!!! I love Hermes-tan too |

grrr the torrent i mentioned above is LQ. probably a cam job couldn't stand watching more than 5 minutes haha
i finally finished off watching the television series a few days ago when i watched the special. the special was unnecessary, but it was nice to revisit some points in the series with this additional viewpoint. |

Hmm... before watching this drama/movie, I've never seem to be aware of Otakus in Akihabara...
There are really a lot of computer shops around that area. Every time when I go for holiday in Japan, I dun notice such ppl around!! In fact, other than the computer stores, there's something even better...... Yeah.. that's right.... AV stores..... Maybe I was too focus on these shops and forgot to notice those Otakus... haha!! Hmm... this time round, when i go japan, I will definitely try to hunt for them!!! |
