Before BoA fans yell and kick me, I'd like to make it clear that although I'm not a fan of BoA perticularly, I do like some of the songs she does, her dance choreography in her PVs is unrivaled and she is very pretty indeed. I do like her new song Everlasting except... everytime I listen to it, it reminds me of Undergraph's song Tsubasa.

BoA - Everlasting :: Listen

Undergraph - Tsubasa :: Listen

Check out the two tracks and you'll know what I mean. I really like the Undergraph song which is why everytime I listen to Everlasting, I'm reminded of it. I thought this was interesting, so I posted. Is it just me or do other people see the similarity too??

^_^

PS. I encoded them into WMA for a special reason. If u have Windows Media Player 10, you can play BoA's song and use the "Play Speed Settings" under the Enhancements sections of Now Playing, and speed the track upto 1.4x to see the striking resemblence.

I will admit that they both sound very similar. It's an interesting comparision. First of all, thank you for posting this and enlightening us, and I doubt anyone is going to yell/physically harm you (haha) at you for posting your opinion here.

Sadly, I don't think BoA has much control over what she releases. This case is so much different from the other plagiarism comparisions, because unlike Ai, BoA rarely gets the opportunity to write and produce her own music. If I'm not mistaken, someone else wrote and arranged the song and the classical version, so if anyone should be to blame for it, it's avex and the people they hired. I hope everyone who reads that takes that into consideration.

I'm wondering if it would even be possible for those who made the song to copy off of this group. No offense, but I've never heard of them or their song or even their record label. Your cap shows that they were number 9 on some sort of countdown, does this mean that they're well known, or at least kind of known? It's difficult to copy off of someone if you've never heard of them or their music, is what I'm trying to say, haha.

Even so, why would avex copy off of some small band? Don't you think it would make more sense to sample from a well-known band? If nobody knows who they are, maybe that means that nobody likes them or their music, so how does it make sense to copy something that nobody likes, assuming that nobody will like the music that is produced by copying? That's what I think, at least. Confused

Actually I think it says they're #94 out of 100 there.

i wont exactly say that undergraph arent well known. they are quite a popular band, but they are new. so they're not entirely 'well known'.

and yes they were 94 on the top 100 songs of summer '05 (if i remember correctly).

as for her not writing her own songs, she was saying on music station how this is one of her first released single that she wrote herself. she actually wrote it back remembering an experience from back when she was 14. the screencap below shows you that someone else composed it.

written by: BoA, Natsumi Watanabe; music: Kazuhiro Hara

[note: kazuhiro hara composes for artists like boa, ayu, exile, w-inds, crystal kay, melody, zone, ELT and has produced for soul tiger, beeny and pink bunny. his discography (jap) is here.]

i didn't see undergraph under his belt, which makes sense 'cause, undergraph write and compose all their own music. and i wasn't really pointing a finger at BoA, i certainly didn't mean to so I'm sorry if I sounded like I did. I know avex is the 'all evil artist controlling' label so it was probably out of her control. as for Undergraph, ppl should chk them out. they are very cool. they are a new young band, 3 guys and a girl who's the drummer.

^_^

Oh, ok, that little 4 was invisible. Embarassed

Thank you for letting me know that she wrote it, I had no idea, maybe I should pay closer attention to those small little notes and chats. (Well, not speaking Japanese kind of gets in the way sometimes...Laughing) Man, no wonder I like it so much, the lyrics are so good. Anyway, I still think it's possible for the composer to have been inspired by "Tsubasa", we can never know.

No, no, I wasn't mad at you, I was just trying to get that out there. I hope you don't think I was mad at you, I meant that to sound very calm, haha.

Undergraph isn't a bad band, but I think "Tsubasa" is a little too...I don't really know how to explain it, choppy for my tastes? Last night I watched the "HEY HEY HEY" end of the year special and I think this song made it to like number 30 something.

Hmm after listening to it, there really is some similarities between the two songs. Not excatly the same, but the same arrangement of notes. Anyhow, with so many songs releasing every year, there are bound to be some songs that are quite similar. Nod

Is it just coincident that the music arrangement for both songs were same? I have no idea but just a bit same only, nothing much.
Nowadays, there are alot of songs in the world, doesn't matter whether is it J-pop. K-pop, Cpop or Western songs, some of the music arragements were same in small lilttle tiny part of that song only.
Composers sometime need ideas, mostly ideas were from their experience or may be from the songs they used to hear. So, may be the coincident part was the idea that come across kazuhiro hara's mindm and may be he thinks that "that part" can be used in ballads, who knows? Only he himself knows it. Boogie

i absolutely agree with what you're saying, like how many songs do composers produce a month? lots and lots, and I'm not saying its right to take a bit from other people's song and claim as their own....but getting ideas, using it as a lead in to another melody, that's understandable.

Wow, tsubasa's chorus sounded ACTUALLY THE SAME to BoA's Everlasting.
Either way, the fault goes to no one really. Because like what spellcheck had said, BoA has no control over her music. Actually, she has control over so little things in her career. Even her clothing, her hair, etc.

And as for Undergraph, I couldn't really judge them, lunge at them and scream "PLAGIARISTS!!" because this is the first time I've ever heard of them. :giggles:

Btw, when did Undergraph release this song?

Undergraph released Tsubasa on 2004.09.22, and BoA's song was released a little bit over a year later on 2006.01.18. Most of the time it's just pure coincidence, or so I'd like to believe. Smile

its so cool that BoA's korean, i tried to learn korean but this happened:

~the sounds are terribly difficult
~without kanji (hanja in korean) it takes me forever to read 0_O
~i was like, if i try to learn korean, my mind will be way to distracted, i ll never master japanese that way.

I wonder if she knows korean, because you know crystal kay doesnt even speak korean. thats kinda sad No

Tatsuka ito LOVE chan

EDIT: this BoA noob just realized she even has albums in korean Embarassed damn im slow.

These are very similar in chorus but not verse, and not identical in chorus, especially last phrases of chorus -- especially timing is different, and so feeling is completely different. Both are nice songs, but BoA feeling is overpowering! this is one of my favorite her songs.
