OK, let me explain this one.
Think of your favourite thing to eat that either comes from Japan or is popular there, and post a picture of it here. Let everyone know, so that others can try it too. In Japanese, it would be called o-susume or a recommendation. Use this format.
Dish Name (English Name)
Description
Photo
Link to Recipie (if possible)
I'll start.
Ton Katsu (Pork Cutlet)
Pork covered in breadcrumbs and deepfried, served with white cabbage and a ton-katsu SPECIAL sauce!! omg YUMMY! It's my absolute favorite.
Find a recipie here (second half of page).
Looking forward to seeing what other people here like.

well it doesn't have to be your favourite, you might as well post about one that you like, or multiple ones, just thought it would give me and others a "to try" list the only japanese restraunt in manchester, where i live, is far too expensive for me to eat there a lot, so when i do go, i like to try something i haven't done before...

ok, I think I'll start with 2 dish.
Gyoza (Japanese dumplins)
Description: This is originally a Chinese dish. Bascially, it's a piece of dough warp around meat. The meat may include onion, ginger, or other spices (depends on the cook). It's cook on a frying pan, making the bottom part ("burnt" part) crispy and the top soft and chewy. When you take the first bite, meat juice will usually spill out. So it's best if you eat it with a spoon. It's usually served with soya and vinegar sauce.

Okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza)
Description: I think it's call the Japanese pizza because it's round and you can put just about any ingridents on it. Usually I have my with octopus, letcus, cheese, seaweed, okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise. The texture of the "crust" is more like a pancake: soft and mushy. It is cook on a frying pan and usually takes 15 min to prepare it.

I don't eat a lot of japanese food coz I'm vegetarian... but I like onigiri
Onigiri
Onigiri literally means "taking hold of (something) with your hands". Onigiri is made by cupping hot, freshly boiled rice in your hands and pressing down on it so that it is soft inside and firm outside. (shejapan) |

^ OMG YUKO THAT'S ADORABLE. XDD
Anyways, I've been to Japan around 10 times and everytime I'm there, I try something new. The food there is just AMAZING!! I feel bad for everyone NOT living in Japan (atleast, from an American view) because the Japanese restaurants here make it seem like the only thing there is SUUUUSHI. *shakes head vigorously* And also, there's not only "Japanese" food, but it's got so many other countries food as well. (DELICIOUS Italian food, oddly enough...)
Anyways, my favorites have got to be Japanese Curry (the one with the rue that you melt and put stuff in, and eat it with rice ^^ mmm mmm), onigiri (yeah that stuff is DA BOMB even though rice ends up getting all over me XD), yakisoba (OMN { oh my noodles } this stuff is YUMMEH!), okonomiyaki (it's very customizable ^^ I mean the name says it all: OKONOMI which is like 'whatever you like' ish), ramen (gotta love nice tonkotsu ramen on a cold day!), tonkatsu (pork cutlets with the tonkatsu sauce *dies*), takoyaki (the octopus balls, holy moly are those good), fried lotus roots (called renkon, omg they're amazing), any instant noodles (to to to to to to to to toooonkotsu shio ramen XD chea 3 pun cooking, w00t!), prepared sandwiches at the convenience store (nice shokupan, ham, mustard, lettuce, eggs...YUMMEH!), hiyashi chuuka (basically its pretty much ramen noodles but cold in an awesome vinegary sauce with piles of vegetables on top)...AND I'VE BORED YOU ENOUGH. So being the nice person thing I am, I'll save you souls and stop here.
P.S. I'm not posting pics, if you want pics then GOOGLE IMAGE IT. ^___^v I'm lucky enough to have a Japanese mother that always makes me all these wonderful foods~ YAY! *pose*
EDIT: Now I feel like an evil leeching n00b idiot because I didn't follow teh "format", sorry. |

@ isa: ja klar! ich liebe es auch^^
Kimchi Ramen:
OMG I love it hot!! but I also like all other sorts of Ramen^^
Kimchi is a hot "seasalad" (dunno the english word, gomen) from Korea but popular in Japan, too. And Ramen is a Japanese noodlesoup. Try it and love it! (But my recommendation is to try gyuuniku or chicken ramen or others first, because they are less hot...)

if it's ramen, it should be good old bog standard tokyo ramen!
i've got the recipie and a picture on my server, i'm too lazy to actually make them smaller to fit this forum, so ill just give you links.
Recipie and PICTURE
there's a restraunt near my department in uni called umami which does a killer ramen (with either gyuuniku or grilled salmon), but at £4.99 (~ USD8.50) i don't get it to eat it as often as i look...OTL ... why did i have to be the poor student
but when i do get to eat it, i enjoy it thoroughly, especially on a cold rainy day (which we get a lot of here in manchester, england)

Well, all of the food basically rules in Japan, but I really like okonomiyaki and monja.
You probably don't want to see a picture of monja. It looks like someone threw up all over the grill on your table. But it's incredibly delicious. Just try it. |
