Old discussion, I see Giggle I am all for an AI BEST. 13 singles she has is the right number to fill a best album. Add one or two remixes or re-arrangements... and you're done Boogie

No way. >_< They must be double CD sets with at least 14 songs on both CDs.
I still say don't release a best until your career ends.

I totally agree. Nod
How can it be his/her 'best' when the artist is still going to be producing music?
Unless, of course, said artist just gives up and goes on to purposefully create bad work so as to maintain the 'Best' distinction of the early stuff... Confused No Giggle

Plus, wouldn't it somewhat affect sales of the other albums/singles?
Most new fans or casual listeners will only buy a 'Best' album if one is available.

Due to the fact that I've somehow morphed into a crazed Ai-fan as of late, I'd probably buy an Ai 'Best' if one came out, even if on the early side. However, I'd rather she wait as long as possible and continue to delight us with new, shiny work. Nod Love
But I'd *LOVE* a PV Collection DVD!!! Embarassed Giggle
Those could be released earlier than 'Best's, though I do love the idea of an Ai Clip Box, like Ayu's. I just don't know if I want to wait that long... Shifty
It would just be nice--convenient, if you will--having them all together to view like a very fancy, expensive-to-produce concert. Wink

Yeah, but how many artists actually do that? You release a few albums you put together a collection of your best songs. That seems to be the way it goes in almost all countries. Especially in Japan. I mean, look at all of the artists who have released a singles collection or best of after three studio albums.

Ayumi Hamasaki - Three albums and then a best of album.
Utada Hikaru - Three albums and then a Single Collection
Mika Nakashima - Three albums and then a best of album.
Koda Kumi - Four albums and then two best albums.
Namie Amuro - Three albums and then a best of album.
Ami Suzuki - Three albums and then a best of album.

(I could go on...)

I'm not saying that just because it's a trend, she should do it. I'm just saying that because it is a trend, she more than likely will be making a best album, compliments of AVEX. It just seems likely. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, but that's just my thoughts on the subject.

I agree with madgirlslovesong, really not because its a trend. but to new people who just got into ai-chan, they will have the BEST album to go over ai's music history. it might attract more people into listening to her! Giggle

but I do want a PV collection as well~ Tongue

I think we must keep in mind JP market is very diferent to US.

US artists have one single per year... if they have, and an album close to X-Mas. On the other hand, we get three, four or more singles per year, and an album every year. This claims for BEST albums to be released every three albums or so. At the end of the career: GREATEST HITS Tongue Furthermore Best albums are a good way to draw the attention of all the people that has never bought the singles. For the next single, they might be joining the people buying the CD Single. Boogie

Artists who aren't exploited by their record companies do that. Their are respected acts in the music industry that don't release a best until they finish. Do As Infinity anyone? JUDY & MARY?

Some of the people you mentioned who released BEST's only did so because of the record companies wishes to make more profits...

I think artist who release a Best after 3-4 albums is a smarter idea since they update fans with a compiliation of their hit singles. Waiting for nearly 10 years for a best makes people lose intrest I think, plus, best is like a conclusion to their early stuff and a start to their better stuff. Although, sadly, that doesn't happen with many, ie: BoA, Mika Nakashima, Utada Hikaru. No I think Ai can pull off it, I know she has much more creative and uniquness to throw out for us.

I would like a Best from Ai since i only have one album from her, it would be great for fans who are new but maybe not great to regulars.

I think if someone is a true fan (not necessary a hard core fan), they'll follow that artist single after single, and album after album. So I don't really see the need for an artist to keep their fans updated with their works. Rather, it should be the other way around (fans keeping up to date with the artist's work).

I think this discussion (and past posts' discussion) all depends on one's definition of "best ablum". LIke HilaryDuffFanboy, I agree that best ablums should be save till an artist decides to end his/her career. Why else would you call it "best album", if it doesn't include all your best works?
Last year I started to get into DAI, just as they announced that they'll disband. I question why I always get into a band/artist just when they were ready to end their career. Then someone told me that it's because once something is really great, they'll always be great no matter how long it has been. So I don't think it's a problem for an artist to wait 10 years (or even longer) to release a "best album". In fact, I think this will give the fans a chance to reflect their past works and thinking "oh yeah, I remember when I first head that song..."
