Hi there, it's me again, this time announcing my final "summer random coding project", the Channel-Ai TV (beta)! Woot, you can now enjoy the goodness of every single QuickTime video I've encoded for the blog so far, all within a tiny popup window rich with next and controller trigger button, playtime display, list of shows available and lastly, a nifty button that will bring you to the related blog article of the video currently playing, how cool is that!
This is once again, my humble attempt to bring more attention to the blog because there're just so much treasure hidden there if you haven't noticed. It's like a little, no huge goldmine for J-Pop lovers and it's all just a few click distance away from you! Well, that's what I feel really, I've learnt so much about J-Pop and recently K-Pop through helping and reading each blogger's wonderful work, which is another reason why I spent so much effort on the blog, I can really see the huge potential of it being a casual place to hangout and learn about new Japanese music and artists for everyone around the world.
Our blog recently celebrated its first anniversary if you haven't noticed, and I made a review sort of posting about the performance of the blog itself throughout the year. If you're interested, head over here and read what I have to say. It's been a wonderful year and I bet every single person involved with the blog had a wonderful time as well. You can truely see the growth of each person in the team by looking at their past and recent works. Me myself, I was a total noob when I first started this blog and guess what? I can even write my own WordPress plugins now, and it's been only a year?
Anyway enough with all off-topic talk, this post should really focus on the TV! I've coded the TV out of self interest and as a challenge for myself to figure out how to implement an idea of showing off those videos we've embedded in our blog articles. I guess it's pretty much a success or I wouldn't dare to show you guys this.
The TV relies heavily on Javascript so you will need to enable it. You will also need to have QuickTime 7 plugin installed, which you can easily get from the newer versions of K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. You will also need to have high speed internet or you'll just end up sitting there waiting for video to buffer all the time. For me, most video take less than 2 second to buffer (if you can reach download speed of 80kbps easily it's likely that you don't have to wait for buffer just like me), and I'm on DSL, so don't worry about the TV being extremely slow if you're on DSL or Cable. Lastly, this TV has only been tested on Firefox and IE, in Opera things are broken so it's not recommended. For best viewing pleasure, go with Firefox, it's my main development platform while building this. So, here's the summary of TV requirements:
- Javascript enabled
- QuickTime 7 plugin
- Hi-speed internet (sorry, dial-up users
)
- Firefox, IE, Safari (Firefox recommended)
If you find any bugs or have any suggestion on how to improve the TV, feel free to post it here. I think that's about it, sorry for not being active in the forums lately, I've been spending more time on the blog and random project like this one. There will be no poll this time, since I don't really know what kind of poll to put up. If you like the TV, just post a comment here. I might be able to add more Ai-chin videos to the TV even though currently we don't have much article about her yet.
Some basic QuickTime knowledge you might want to know, clicking on the "screen" will stop the video while double click will make it play again.
I'll update each forum themes with a link to the TV when I feel like it. For now, you can probably just remember the URL, which is easy and intuitive enough. Forget about your stupid YouTube , Channel-Ai TV is the real deal, we just need to extend our library of videos, of course.
If you're curious, the logo is Web 2.0 inspired. |

I love this! :333
I like how you make everything nice and simple, and yes, haha, very web 2.0. I actually like this better than the radio in a way, because I'm more interested in a song if I can see its PV. x3
I don't know any blogs that have what Channel-Ai Blog has, and so much potential. I'm sure you guys are off to a very good future. Hah, only if I have the writing skills. |

I agree with caffeinated. I don't think there will be a blog better than Channel-Ai's blog!

Holy mother of all geekmasters, I can't believe you actually went through with the Channel-Ai TV idea! From way back when it was mentioned as a joke in the chat room (at that time, the idea was to include Ai PV's and such), I thought that the whole idea was rather unnecessary, but tying the TV to the blog is an excellent idea! With the dawn of a new year for the blog, more attention is just what Channel-Ai needs. Perhaps now you can rest assured that more members will visit the blog frequently, as such would be an indication of not only the blog's development, but the evolution of the forum as well. Yoku yattazo!
Extending the TV's library would be great and all, but aren't you the only one who encodes videos for the blog? Of course a noob like me couldn't do anything about it (incompetence is my middle name ), but I'm sure you could teach some of the more experienced bloggers how to encode videos into QuickTime... right? You're always working so hard to foster new ideas to make Channel-Ai an even more dazzling place, and we truly appreciate your abiding dedication. We'd be delighted to help you out as much as possible.
I'm trying out the TV right now, and it's working accordingly. It works much like the radio, does it not? The PV's are randomized so you can guarantee that users will be introduced to something new which, in turn, will attract attention to the blog and its wonderful articles written by an outstanding blogteam. I understand that this is a beta version of the TV, but will you be including an option to disable the shuffling like in the radio? Either way, I really enjoy the the randomness and suspense of shuffled playlists so I wouldn't mind if you left it this way. This provides great opportunity for members to expand their range of interest and knowledge in J-Pop/K-Pop/anything else.
Thank you, eyn, for your hard work once again! This fervent enthusiasm of yours to take on projects is truly inspiring. Another job well done!
I feel horrible now. Here you guys are working so hard while I sit around and do nothing. I AM caught up in a lot of work for school and all, but I don't feel like that is a good enough excuse. To tell you the truth, I'm having some problems finishing my article, but I haven't had the guts to ask anyone for help as of yet. Sure I know everyone would be eager to help, and I really appreciate that, yet I falter. I apologize.. I'm still quite busy with school... |

ha ha... dude that's cool, but as soon as i read the topic, an idea came to my mind... i thought it would be so cool to have members send short videos of them and they could all be podcasted on the blog under the channel-ai members channel or something...
the video looks so cool. i'm currently experimenting with videos too so i know that they can be slightly tricky. that's very cool that you can write your own wordpress plugins now, i've only been using wordpress now for a few months so im a still noob at it, but im getting used to it quickly... and yes.. Firefox recommended... on so many levels
good job on the blog and its first anniversay.
quick suggestion: perhaps you should change the link target to the blog from the main forum menu into _blank (an open in a new window link). those who use firefox will still open it in new tabs and it will give those using IE and laptops without middle clicks (or like mine where the middle click is near impossible) a chance to get to the blog without having to leave the forum. just my suggestion though.

yo! This TV is so awesome! The quality is pretty decent, and it really ties in with the blog so well. I think it will definitely get more readers in. CHAI Blog really is becoming one of a kind with cool articles, radio, and now even television. I really think that the blog will have a really cool future and become a must for JPop fans! You've put so much work into it and it definitely shows along with your ego =P.
You guys who haven't, should definitely check it out. Not only do you get good quality videos without the annoyance of downloading, but you also support the CHAI community and its blog! And we all want to be good members of this wonderful eyn-led community now don't we? |

This is great idea, and great surprise! Thank you eyn for all your hard work!
Like caffeinated, I like to preview a song along with the PV. So I'll definitly take adventage of this feature!
The first thing that came to me was "What's a TV without commercials?!" At first I was thinking of short commercials for the blog or certain articles. And then I thought, why not feature some real CM? If have some of Ai's CM, we can link it to the gallery and back.
And Celsius005 is right, you should teach some of the bloggers how to encode videos. That way we don't all have to bug and come running to you when we need something encoded. |

Again you've provided something extremely valuable to the community. I love the idea, it does help people discover new artists and then decide whether to read the article or not. Personally I feel this blog is becoming one of the most comprehensive ones around and this has made it more complete and exciting. Keep it up eyn and thank you for making this blog an exciting source for all of us. |

Wow, eyn!
Sorry I'm so late in posting... Upon first seeing this, I got too caught up with playing with/searching thru the TV and totally forgot to comment...
This is so cool! I'm amazed how well it works, too (no reflection on your skills--I just am thinking of battling with jerky streaming videos from other sites... !
It's nice being able to preview PVs and browse new artists. And this certainly is another way into blog; see a new PV/artist and with one click, learn more about it/them!
I agree with Aprilis, tho:
Aprilis. wrote: The first thing that came to me was "What's a TV without commercials?!" At first I was thinking of short commercials for the blog or certain articles. And then I thought, why not feature some real CM? I'd love to see CMs (especially those featuring Ai) make an appearance on the Ch-Ai TV. Having them streaming makes a lot of sense (besides the TV commercial connection) seeing as they are small, short files which, unlike whole PVs, aren't entirely necessary for downloading. What I mean is, they are very short since they are meant to play between programs. Downloading them as individual files and playing them thus doesn't make as much sense, nor is as satisfying, as watching them (together) in some kind of streaming (like television) form. Sure, downloading is still a given option for one's favorites, of course.
Perhaps the CMs could be in another pull-down menu...? Or be inserted between PVs if just letting the TV stream/play thru...? Not sure how any of that would work/is possible...
Anyways, great work, as always, eyn!
I'm thrilled that Ch-Ai just keeps on growin'! |
