So I don't have too many real Japanese music CDs. When I looked up Ai's discography. I was sort of surprised to find there are two versions of every Ai release. Then I found out one is the single, and one is the CD+DVD. I was curious, which do you guys prefer?

I go first. I haven't bought anything Ai yet but I will...and I am very excited for CD+DVDs. It is a difference of eight US dollars on yesasia, but i consider it well worth it to actually be able to legally own her PVs. Plus they include more stuff not on the television version of the PV. I think if other artists did this, many music companies could make some real nice money, and I dearly wish I could own the corresponding PVs of the music I already have bought.
One more note about the eight dollar difference...makes free shipping a lot easier on yesasia as only two singles are good enough to qualify for shipping versus it depends but most singles will be borderline free shipping if you buy two. So with at least one Ai single it is pretty much guaranteed two singles will have free shipping.

It depends on the what's on the DVD. As it is the PV the 99% of the times, it depends on the PV greatness or greatless Tongue I still have not bought an Ai cd with DVD as well. I think of it, in realistic way, and I would probably play the DVD once, the PV only lasts 4 minutes, and then the box will be forgotten in the cd shelves Giggle So I prefer only CD unles the PV catches me for some reason (for example's Ayu - fairyland) Love

auggg....i thought about this later and wanted to add a few options. one for the rich people who buy both in support of ai. and one for the poor people/credit card-less people who don't think they will be buying ai music anytime soon. there doesn't seem to be anyway to add poll options though. well anyway i'd like to see what more people think...

well, i'm not gonna actually enter a vote. i have a reason.
i don't own a region free, or one of the asian region DVD players Crying
so, i could buy the DVD and stare at it longingly, or just get the single, and pretend the DVD doesn't exist so i don't have to cry myself to sleep each night Crying
...
...
ok, i'm just trying to be funny. Tongue but my point is, i would buy the DVD one, but i don't have the correct DVD player. No
that's why i didn't enter a vote, 'cause it wouldn't really be right.

KerushiiAi, if u have the dvd/cd drive, then it should be able to play. U can just try putting it and see how it goes. I reckon it works.

Well, I would take the CD+DVD copy of course. But it really depends on the price. Laughing

This can be more problematical that it would appear.
I don't know what kind of computer KerushiiAi has, but with Macs, the user must select the region of DVD he/she wishes to have the computer play. This selection can only be done about four times, and then whatever was the last choice becomes permanent. This prevents the Mac from being used as a Region-Free DVD player. [Personally, I think the whole region idea is stupid and mean...] Mad
There are probably some illegal override codes out there, but they would most likely void any hope of warranties or cheap company-sanctioned repair if something should go wrong (do you really trust some random website with your computer...?). No
As far as PCs go with the DVD regions, I can't be sure. I have friends, though, whose IBMs/Dells/etc. have simply ejected non-Region 1 DVDs with messages that they are unable to read or even recognize the disc.
So buy at your own risk. A better bet would be if you can get your hands on a Region 2 DVD (the region Japan uses) locally/from a friend and test it for yourself. Nod
Good luck! Love

With that out of the way...
I'm one of the lonely few who chose 'Plain Single.' Embarassed
Now, obviously, it's not because I don't care for Ai's PVs... I do have my reasons, I swear! Giggle

When I first became a fan of Ai, like KerushiiAi, I only had a Region 1 DVD player and a Mac, meaning even if I got the CD/DVD version, I wouldn't be able to watch the PV--seemed like a waste of money, despite how much I liked Ai and her work. So I just got the regular version.
Besides, the PVs were all available online to watch, with subtitles to boot! [ Boogie ]
Now, I know I should support the artist and not just download, but I prefered the fan-made subtitled versions (as I was still relatively new to and unfamiliar with the lyrics) and downloading was the only option at the time for viewing the PVs at all. I could've just downloaded the music and artwork too, though, yet I still bought the singles (and didn't just wait for the album to be released either).

Since then, however, I have obtained a Region-Free DVD player (the very-discounted GIEC GK-3128 from YesAsia -- *highly recommended!!*) so I can watch DVDs (and VCDs) from all over (yay! Ai's concerts! Boogie ).
Yet I continue to buy the regular CD versions. Why?
Well, I like to have a consistent 'library' of singles, for one.
Also, I usually prefer the packaging of the regular version, despite the 'extras' of the CD/DVD.
Of course there's also the cost issue. Buying the regular version means more money that can be put towards other Ai merchandise, if not other musical interests. [I can only budget so much for my 'trivial obsessions'...] Shifty Giggle
Consider also the bonuses. The first press bonus has not always been equally shared between versions. Her first six singles came with picture books drawn by Ai, but only with the regular CD-only version. This also came up with her three albums. LOVE COOK even had two versions of CD-only bonuses: Picture Book or Photo Book. I think Avex does this as an incentive to buy the regular versions because they know what this poll is clearly showing: most people, given the choice, will opt for the CD/DVD version. Otherwise, the regular version would barely make it off the shelves.

Perhaps someday I will have the funds to also purchase the CD/DVD versions, if I really feel the need to 'complete' my collection. But for now, I'll continue as I am, and pray for a PV collection DVD, particularly a big Clip Box, like Ayu's... Love

wordy. but i'm glad you posted. i was thinking just about everyone gets CD/DVDs so i was wondering who out there really does buy the plain single, hence the point of a poll where the outcome was pretty predictable. and you've laid out many nice facts comparing the two.
i finally got a region two DVD a couple months back and was scared i couldn't play it but Nero Showtime had no problems for me...so i'm coming Ai!

I do not consider that to be a bad thing.
I'll assume it was meant as 'Gee/Wow, that's a lot of words!', which is what I usually get... Wink Giggle
You're new here and I haven't been posting much as of late (too busy in the real world, unfortunately) Sad .
I think once you 'get to know me' (as much as one can on an online forum), you'll find that many of my posts are long, esp. when I have a lot to say. Embarassed
Since my choice/vote in the poll was of the extreme minority, I felt a response more detailed than, 'That's my preference,' was in order.
For me, multiple short posts to clarify earlier points are rather silly, so I prefer to explain things up-front and thoroughly. Much can be 'lost in translation' on the forum having only text and the occasional emoticon to go on -- no facial expression, vocal inflection, etc. to facilitate communication of one's intent. (Not to mention the fact that English is not the first language of a very high percentage of members here...)
Also to note, about a third of my post was regarding the issue of playing Region-X DVDs on computers...

Good choice for a poll, Mansley. Particularly helpful to new fans who are weighing how to start their collections, or 'old' ones considering a switch... Nod Love

zyzzyva, i think Mansley perhaps meant the good way, if u read his sentence after "wordy".

Anyway, it doesn't matter if u make it long, as long as it is informative. Just like how u explained about the DVD while being used in PC and Mac. I didn't realise it, because i never had that problem. But it's good to know because there is such thing. DVD region code is indeed stupid. Blank stare
