pretty much everyday, i look at the bottom of the home screen, and look at the birthdays. usually, there are a ton of names down there. i don't recognize like, any of them. so i click, and many of them have never posted, or they've posted once, and that's a request for a download Blank stare
i don't know about the rest of you, but this really bugs me. Blank stare if they're not gonna post, why join? eyn clearly states in the forum rules to only join if you're going to post. is there anything we can do to keep these people out? Confused they're just wasting a username and password, and if they're not going to post, no one knows them, so honestly, who cares if it's their birthday? (yes, it's rude, but you understand, right?) we only wanna celebrate the special days of contributing members. Smile
eyn has made an effort to keep them out, but what else can we do? they're polluting ch-ai. Sad any suggestions? Confused

I guess this problem exists in every forum (at least those that i have been into). There's just no certain way to keep them out, thinking of it just make head aches. I will only suggest, if there is really a need to get rid of them, delete those inactive accounts for being inactive for a certain period of time.

About celebrating birthdays...well, u can just say happy birthday to those u wanna to. Ignore the inactives. I think that settles it.

Maybe those little nasty people just want to leech downloads! Bloody leechers! Where could be another place to download Ai songs rather than this? It's very difficult to make this possible. I hope you're right Kels, they should remove those leechers.

lots of other places to get ai stuff besides here.
uuuhhh...yeah every forum seems to have this problem. i don't know if people are just plain forgetful about their username/password or the url or their computer just dies the next day and they can't get a new one or they ran into trouble with the mafia or whatnot...but you're right that a lot of people don't post. for the time-being the only thing i can foresee is to delete the inactive accounts since we certainly don't want to restrict who can join this forum. that would have to fall on eyn though, unfortunately. maybe some of the very active members can become mods and act as the police force so as to take some of the burden of eyn's shoulders.
and about the birthdays, i think you are correct not wishing someone happy birthday if they've made no attempt to be part of the forum. almost certainly, they won't even see your kind wishes if you post them.

Now there's two reasons. Thank you Mansley. Nice sig! How do you make stuff like that? So it's either they are very forgetful and forgot their password or they want to leech the songs off here. Maybe we can make more mods. To make eyn's life easier, we should create more mods. What do you say? I know he's having a hard time locking threads. That's why we need more. Aprilis and eyn can't do it alone. So that's why I say, more mods!

Since none of us have the abilitly to help delete these users and prevent them from joining the forum, is there something else that can be done? Instead of pushing these uers away, maybe we can invite them into the community and explain to them that we are more than just a place where you can find downloads.

For example, if we find a user posting its first post in the download , instead of saying something like "Didn't you read the rules? Obviously you didn't cause your first post is here" we can say something more positive and encourage them to participate in other sections of the forum, like the general section. There are actually a lot of "random" topic in the general section that a new user can post in. Or, we can encourage them to introduce themselves in the newbie section (yes yes, this is coming from a member who rarely greets new members in the newbie section; guilty as charge).

What I'm trying to say is, since we can't prevent these users from joining the forum, let's do what we can to change their "user status" in the forum.

[edit after reading carlito's post above]
Actually, I'm not a mod. Well no, I am... sort of. I only help with the gallery. On the forum, I'm just a regular member like everyone else here.
And about people who are just registering to download songs, I don't think that's one of the big reason. Cause a non-register user and non-regular member cannot see the download sections at all. Unless people think that a download section will appear after they register, now that's a different story. This will probably explain why some users never post any thing after they register, because they didn't get what they were looking for.

@aprilis: encouraging users to become more active would be very ideal. unfortunately this might not always be easy since a lot of the inactive users probably never even come here after registering...so no words can reach them.
also...if you don't have superpowers on this forum...is it even capable for new mods to have superpowers? or maybe only eyn knows if we can do that...

@carlito: it is a gif file. it is pretty easy to make but time consuming. i use microsoft gif animator and take a series of screencaps from the PV. (i used virtualdubmod...and captured every fifth frame for about a four and a half second interval) then i had to cut them all to the same size and put it all into the animator. you're essentially looking at part of the PV at one-fifth the frame rate and maybe some loss in picture quality. and the two frames with text are simply...text...i used some of the starry background of the planetarium cover's background for the background.
no one said nice sig back when i had my younha - houkiboshi sig...which was pretty much the exact same! No ...anyway since i am on an ai forum, i think i should have an ai sig. actually on my younha forum i have both ai and younha in all their PV greatness, but i don't see anyone with two banners here so i removed younha. i'll slowly make more of these gif files and add them on over there...maybe one day i'll have some sort of small scale war for my sig.

Well, there was a forum I used to be on which made you post an introduction in the newbie area before you could access the rest of the forum.

I think that this would be a good idea here.

It's up to eyn though, I guess. Nod

hmmm...inactive users are always a problem in forums, especially when the forum has download sections I think... Confused

to be honest, I was inactive for nearly one year, too...I just didn't have time or motivation to post Embarassed
but now I regret it, cause since I started posting more, I really enjoy being here and posting regularly and it has become an inherent part of my online activity everyday Giggle
I don't know about other members, but maybe some of them will start posting somewhen in the future... Confused
so in my opinion, encouraging them to post more, is a very good idea... Nod
maybe if they don't post for a long time, someone could send them an e-mail and ask if they don't want to join the community by posting...but this would also be very exhausting, I think... hmm
but it would be great, if we could get more active members with such a method ^^

davedim's idea isn't bad, too...although the people would maybe start writing insincere introductions, just so they can access the download section... No

it's a very difficult problem after all, and solving it won't be easy...if it can be really solved at all... Sad

I was just wondering, isn't there a thing on the forums for the admins (I believe there is one like this on InvisionFree boards) where after so long of inactivity for a username, the username like gets deleted or something. I may be wrong about this being on the InvisionFree boards, cos I haven't looked at my school's anime club's forums admin area lately. ^^;

I better watch what I say, cos I tend to become inactive after awhile. I'm trying not to here tho. TRYING NOT TOO!!!!!! MWAH!!!

By asking them to post in Newbie area or post until a certain amount of posts before allowing them to download, perhaps is a good thing. Because in my opinion, by trying posting even though it's insincere, if the response from others are fun, maybe they will somehow get encouraged. But i do think that probability is slim.

Hey Mansley, i do think ur Younha sig before was great, only that i didn't say it. Great work on ur gif sigs. Smile

yeah, i was thinking of something like, automatically deleting their account after 6 mos. of no posts. i mean none at all, like their total count is zero. and maybe we could make it so you have 3 mos or something to get 50 posts, then your account is cemented, but i don't know Sad
it sounds hard and like a lot of work. can eyn make regular members into mods that could be cleanup crew on these people? Confused
if so, i'd be willing! Giggle

i think we need to get eyn to read this thread, and give some input Nod
because this is just disgusting No
and what's worse? the second post in there was made on my 14 bday! Crying

The introduction rule in the forum I used to be on was actually a last resort to stop spambots.

I know that there have been a few problems, but is the problem with leechers really that bad here?

i don't know Confused how could you tell?
i guess, look down at the birthdays area at the bottom of the home screen, and try to find someone with over 5 posts. and if there is one, read the posts. they're probably requesting a re-up Mad
