Maybe before they register, we can ask them why they are here. I noticed that are lots of leechers in the board. Maybe we can ask them if they're here for chatting or downloading the files instead. It'd make the board cleaner and make life much easier for eyn (although I can say eyn has warned me alot of times  ). I know, a lot of people would think this is difficult but it's definitely possible.
So what I've basically said (look at the huge paragraph, ouch!) is we can survey our members if they want to chat to the people or just be nasty leechers and download the files and start making eyn's life harder. So what do you say? |

| Well that could be the same thing for chatting with people. But only downloading in this site would cause bandwith trouble for this site. |

well i think eyn's made it pretty clear in the rules which no one seems to read. that you should only join this forum if you intend to chat. and that you could still leech ai's singles and videography without having to join.
i think maybe because people have seen similar forums that are devoted solely to a single artist, and maybe on those similar forums joining and leeching seemed easy so they try that here too. |

| I think the problem with surveying people before they register, is that a lot of them will lie, knowing the purpose of this (or these) questions. And since we can't talk directly to a person over the internet, it makes it that much easier for that person to lie about their intentions of being here (no physical cue to determine if that person is lying or not). |

although it sounds like a good idea at first, Aprilis. kinda hit the nail on the head.
they'll lie. end of story. if they're here just to leech anyway, they're probably not great people.
and they can leech ai's singles and vids without joining! if they weren't so dumb, they might know that already!  |

mansley was a smart leecher! he leeched singles quietly and then...listened and got really interested in ai and now he is here to chat and have fun and talk ai. of his own free will. i don't think it's been a week yet but this is a good place to be. and being active in two forums isn't as demanding as i thought.
what aprilis said about not being able to talk in person. this forum has a lot less authority that way. cause new members just look at what the computer screen asks them...they don't have to care what they put in. whereas a live interview would be harder since you are staring another person in the face. |

I agree with what Aprilis mentioned above, that is most people will just lie if you force them to fill in some sort of "why you want to join" field.
The problem with leechers isn't that they are taking so much bandwidth that the server couldn't handle (in fact we still have more bandwidth than we need during the peak leeching season), I just despise the leeching behavior and don't want people to join simply to download. It's definitely not the purpose of having a forum in the first place.
I tried to make myself as clear as possible during the registration process and I guess it sort of worked out for people like Mansley who actually bother to read what the site admin has to say. I can't stop leechers from registering, but they will realize that they aren't getting anywhere once they logged in using their new account.
Sometimes people just get so crazy about finding downloads that they fail to find the true joy of interacting with other fans. WIth the antileecher system we currently have, I hope more people can find what a forum really means. |
