Synopsis:
While working at a seaside inn with his high school buddies, Kouji Fujishiro (Yamada Takayuki) meets Kaoru Amane (Sawajiri Erika), a street musician. Kaoru is suffering from an incurable disease called XP (xeroderma pigmentosum), and canít be exposed to the sun. Under the sun, the two would never have met. Still, destiny brings the two together. Since the day he suddenly lost his job, Kouji has lost sight of his dreams. But when he meets Kaoru, who is making positive efforts to become a singer, Kouji regains his long-forgotten passion for music.

My review:
Honestly guys I am not a huge J-Drama fan nor am I really big on love stories. Well anyway, due to circumstances, I did decide to watch this. I rather enjoyed it...but still some of the plot twists near the end were a little on the not believable side and some of the love scenes got a little cheesy for my taste. But I still managed to get into the story enough to cry at least once or twice. (i don't cry much while watching stuff, so this is definitely a score for the drama) Wasn't super crazy flood my face with tears and use tissue non-stop like Erika's other drama but it was some degree of crying. Overall, I will still say the drama was rather enjoyable.
More importantly this began my interest in Erika Sawajiri, which led me to one of my favorite shows ever One Liter of Tears and also her singing during this drama was pretty decent for an actress. I'm sure most of you know her single has been doing really well this year...I think it is the best-selling female single of 2006.
Oh yeah, if you guys watched One Liter of Tears, this story will seem pretty similar since she is suffering from yet another incurable disease. But I tend to think of Taiyou no Uta as more of a love story than a touching/depressing tearfest. And Erika is no longer a cute little school girl but some...guitar playing night person. (i wanted to say vampire but i don't know who would've gotten the joke...)

Hello everyone! I have watched this TV series 10 chapters, and I liked this series very much. In this posting I will compare Taiyou no uta TV series with movie, okay? I like both, but they are different.

There is some difference between these TV shows and the very fine movie Taiyou no uta starring folk singer Yui. As Mansley said, this series has some complication in the story that is not found in the movie, but this is possible because TV series is much longer, 10 chapters each one is more than 45 minutes. Some of these additional story parts are silly and do not contribute to sensibility of this show, for example Kaoru is attacked by some gang boys, this scene is not part of story flow and should not be included, there are others like this.

Another difference, TV series develops character of Kouji much more, also Kaoru's friend Misaki, but this is also because TV series has time for this. Also TV series has many more characters to develop, like Asami who is surprise! Kouji's former girlfriend and now famous singer! and Mr. Kudou from entertainment management company, he certainly seems like such a person as I imagine them! Kaoru's parents and doctor have larger roles too, this is okay because I like them and also they are like measurement for audience, yes? our emotions and their emotions are very similar, especially we become to care so much about Kaoru because they show us this feeling.

Anyway, main difference is of course Erika Sawajiri is acting role of Kaoru instead of Yui who is really a singer, this is very different! but Sawajiri is okay singer for this movie, I think when Sony made her CD and named it from Kaoru Amane this is silly but anything to make lots of money, yes?! Yui music in the movie is amazing excellent of course but she is one of the best folk singers in Japan even so young. But remember that Sawajiri knows very much about sadness and loss of loved person in life! because her father died from cancer when she was in junior high school, and her brother died in car crash soon after! anyway I think you can understand Sawajiri true life relationship to this type of movie! And in this TV series she is telling us to keep trying personal dream and place value on every minute of life! no matter some part of life is difficult and great pain and loss, which Sawajiri knows very well and so do I, but she is example for everyone!

So I have watched movie together with my aunt who I live with, and her sisters, we became very cry at the end! I have watched this TV series alone on my computer while travelling for work, this is okay to do in my hotel room in evenings, and I became cry many times but feeling was not so much intense until the end! so sad but I will not describe or spoil for you, okay? I recommend you watch this series! especially Sawajiri is a very fine actress and even okay singer too!

I totally loved this drama~ really, really like it, I don't know how many times I cried during all the episodes and sawajiri erika did a terrific job! Giggle

I think its got a really good message behind the drama, to always look on the bright side...and always to dream and achieve your goal. Love

and of course, the music in the drama was awesome! especially the soundtrack, loved it! I loved it so much that I actually bought the OST, kaoru amane's both edition of the single~ Tongue and got myself interested in erika-san and her acting career. I think she did a really good job, this girl can cry anytime!! which made me cried as well...there are so many touching scenes throughout...how can you not cry? Tongue

I loved this drama too, but not as much as 1リットルの涙...
But nonetheless it was still sad, can't say I cried but I got that really dry feeling in my throat throughout most of the series.. (still need to watch it without subtitles for practise)
The music was impressive too, too bad the limited edition sold out within a few days ><
(And the single did very well with Oricon Daily and Weekly Rankings, only just recently slipped out of the top 10..)
Can't wait to see her latest movie 手紙 within the next few weeks...

yeah. 1リットルの涙 was what was really responsible for my erika obsession. but both the dramas are quality shows.

i was very bummed about this too, considering i didn't start watching taiyou no uta until the single had been out for a few weeks, and i didn't watch 1リットルの涙 until after taiyou. so i had no clue who kaoru amane was at the time of the release. BUT...on yesasia you can find the limited edition still, only it is the taiwan version! i was sort of hesitant as to whether or not this was acceptable but i couldn't pass up the limited edition again. so i ordered it. hm...another week and a half before i get it?
speaking of limited edition...i envy you orange_ka. well i'm glad you love erika so much, she's really a fantastic actress.

my first j-dorama. i started to watch this series 'cause i wanted to see the movie with YUI, but i couldn't find it anywhere. so i watched this series first. and it was really good and sad. i don't know if i prefer YUI or Erika as Kaoru, but i think i'll take Erika in the end. the movie was too short , and the series was too long, but you got to know her and Kouji better in the series, though they could've skipped some stuff. great series, never the less. Smile

and thanks to this series i started to watch 1リットルの涙 too. and "Shinobi - Blade under Heart". i just hope that she actually will survive the next i see. Tongue and "Otoshimono" doesn't look that promising from that point of view. Laughing

it affects her skin. i think. not her brain. when my friend watched this first episode without first reading a synopsis he thought she had skin cancer.

Not really this one has a focus on music and isn't as sad, but worth seeing nonetheless

Oh yeah, I'm going to start watching the movie, soon...
And I was going to watch the drama, too, but I kind of forgot, lol...
Anyways, for the single, when I first heard of it a couple of months ago and watched the pv on youtube, everyone was making comments on how funny sawajiri looks in the pv, lol, it took me forever to find out what they meant! (but by then I noticed playing a guitar you aren't touching is kind of hard... and singing without voice is hard, too) But I think Sawajiri did a great job singing it in studio when she recorded it, though. Except in "stay with me" there's this one part where she gets completely off on the chorus, but it's still wayy better than I can do, so I still think she did pretty good. But does she really play the guitar in there? (in the pv it 'shows' her) Because she did good on that too, if she did, since she only had a little while... but reading whateveryone says makes me want to watch it soon! So I hope a little youtube can help me, lol...

Uhm, did anyone notice in practically most (if not all) of Erika Sawajiri's rolls she dies? I mean, I don't know everything she's played but in all the ones I've heard of she dies... I mean... 1 litre of tears, taiyou no uta, shinobi...

i do not believe she actually plays the guitar. from time to time i watch the pv and i noticed her left hand's fingers are pretty much stationary during the whole beginning part while the right hand is strumming away. of course my ears are not well trained to notice so maybe all the notes in the beginning require hardly a change in finger positioning but it looks suspicious...also i doubt that the beginning is all the same note. (it certainly doesn't sound that way) oh yes and for the one live performance she performed, she did not have a guitar on stage, and i heard it was lip-synched but i can't tell.
well taiyou no uta and 1 liter of tears are the only two dramas where erika is the lead role. and yes they are quite similar but they have their differences too, so i can enjoy both!

The movie isnt as good (much shorter less character development) but YUI is in it - so it makes it worth watching ><
I thought it was a bit too short and it seemed rushed - had virtually no character attachment well cept YUI but I like her anyway... So for YUI fans its a must see but the drama achieves so much more so make sure you watch both Smile
I am pretty sure she doesnt play the guitar (remembering reading on d-addicts forums)
Yamada Takayuki and Sawajiri Erika both star together in the movie "tegami" which I am in the process of getting (too bad there are no subs so it wil be a challenge!) Hope it's good..
(sawajiri erika with glasses!! *dies*)

Now to go through the drama without subs during summer vacation Confused
