I only know of Ai Otsuka & Ayumi Hamasaki... I really like both of them. I know of OLIVIA, Yuna Ito & Mika Nakashima because of NANA but they are not my favourites... I dislike Utada Hikaru & I dislike Koda Kumi... I would like it if someone suggested me some artists similiar to Ai's style? I really don't know any.
Suggestions would be great. Thankyou! |

Most people that like Ai Otsuka seem to like YUI.
She's really good! |

I recommend YUKI and Tommy February 6,
To get you into more random J-Pop artist, I recommend BoA, Namie Amuro, Misia, Nanase Aikawa, Do As Infinity (disbanded though), Eri Nobuchika, Yonekura Chihiro, Maki Goto, Tokyo Jihen, and Minmi. |

Oh yeah! YUI is really good. I don't really listen to her, but my sister does and it sounds nice.
And about the above bands that were mentioned, if you like Shiina Ringo, then you will like Tokyo Jihen and most likely Aikawa Nanase. But out of all "rock" artists that are female, Aya Kamiki is my favorite. Although I admit I'm not as impressed of her new music, her old one was simply amazing, but the new one is nice, too.
But, anyways, I'm sure everyone knows ZONE, lol, but a lot of different people like them. Personally, I think they're really cool. I mean, for most people, since they have nice music it doesn't really matter who they like originally.
I don't really know any Ai-ish ones... well, I know one that's kind of similar, but I forgot her name kind of, lol. |

Well, I listen to a few other J-Pop artists beside Ai and I think you will probably like them too, though I can't be sure.
mihimaru GT: I'm quite crazy about them lately, their song are hip-hop + pop, with some rap here and there together with really cool melody (a lot of them are classic melody from other songs), quite awesome overall. I plan to write an article about them with yukino later on for the blog, for now you'll can listen to a few of their songs here. I recommend the first track "itsumademo hibiku kono melody" and their hit song "kibun joujou" (the song they performed at the recent best hit kayousai, which they received the award together with Ai-chin). The female vocal, hiroko, is really cute, many said she looks like Mari Yuguchi from Morning Musume, you can definitely judge it yourself!
ZONE: Thanks to spellcheck, I got to know this awesome girl band in 2005, after they disbanded. Their songs are very catchy and a lot of them are really nice, you can try "secret base", the link to the song is in spellcheck's ZONE biography article.
sifow: A new artist that is relatively unknown to most people. Her song are very pop and catchy, you might find them interesting.
RURUTIA: She's kinda like new age artist for J-Pop. Here's two really great song from her: Selenite and Lost Butterfly. See if you like them.
Then there are Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi, Utada Hikaru etc. most of them you have probably heard of. YUI, as mentioned by davedim and tsumetai.ame, is indeed pretty good too, make sure you try out some of her music. |

I agree with del. aiko was the first artist that came to mind when I saw this thread. For some reason she really reminds me of Ai. misono is also a bit like Ai with a tiny rock twist. You should check her out and her band, which is now disbanded, day after tomorrow.
YUI has already been mentioned, but she's definitely worth checking out. Most people that I know of like her. Also, try ayaka. She's relatively new to the J-Pop scene, she just debuted this year, but she's got an amazing voice. I would say she's kind of like Yuna Ito in vocal ability, only her style is different. |

as many others siad: YUI is great. she hasn't released that much yet, though...
i was about to recommend Yuna Ito, but you've already heard her, apparently.
Hitomi Takahashi is an artist i would like to recommend to anybody. she sang the first intro song for BLOOD+, and then i was hooked. listening to her right now.
as for not liking Utada Hikaru... have you listened to her latest album "ULTRA BLUE"? that one is really good (billions of times better than "EXODUS").
most other japanese artists i'm listening to are from Hello! Project: Aya Matsuura, Morning Musume, Miki Fujimoto and other. |
