enough of things like ”う is prounounced like "oo" in "moo" "
now its time for: ”The japanese うshould be pronounced WITHOUT the lips rounded"
simple enough ? i hope.
(only 1 vowel is the same as english, and only 3 consonants)
WARNING:my native language is hindi, and many of its sound meet up with japanese, so if i say something is easy to pronounce, it may just be easy for me.

Vowels

あ-this pronounced as "ah" but in the position for "a as in bat", it pretty much just "ah" but
to learn the small nuance, you will have to do what i did: listen to native speakers.
い- "ee" same as english
う-”The japanese うshould be pronounced WITHOUT the lips rounded"
え- "eh" or "e [as in bed], but without the mouth streched out as in english
お-this is really hard to explain. hmm, round your lips and bend your toungue back to form a dome. the japanese "oh" vowel takes the most work to pronounce. this is not an adequate explnation, i suggest you do further study on this.

K-かきくけこ
the japanese k is pronounced with less aspiration (ie. not as breathy as in english)
き- pronouned sort of like "kyi", but that should come naturally because you speak the palatal english

S-さしすせそ
し- say "si". you are smiling a bit right? now just keep that smile and say "shi". this is do to the fact that in old japanese it was pronounced "si"

T-たちつてと
t's is dental, and has less aspiration than english (ie. your toungue should be touching your upper teeth and it should be less breathy like it is in english)
ち- it is best to think of chi as a slurring of t+japanese shi. it pronounciation is based on "ti" but the part that makes "chi" is "shi"

N-なにぬねの
this sound is dental so toungue should be touching teeth
に- this is simply "nyi". not its not sort of like "nyi" its exactly "nyi" (trust me, my host family, and the few people in japan who would talk to me before running away and saying "no ingurishu" proved it)

H-はひふへほ
same as english
ひ-This sound is has baffled foreigners who havent had much experioence with japanese. not that sound perse, but the sound its confused with,し.many dialects confuse the 2, even tokyo-ben (which has sorta broken off from hyoujungo, but ill explain that some other time), with hito becoming shito. this basically because they are under the impression its "hi". no, its not, its "hyi". say it out loud and you will hear its weird hissy ness
ふ- another sound people often pronounce way to "fu-ishly" *guffaw* Laughing. just say "hu" but bring your lips together a BIT closer.

M-まみむめも
same as english
み- sort of like "myi"

Y-や ゆ よ
ok, finally i can do an explanation for all the sounds. "ya,yu, and yo" are softer than in english. say "you" in english. your mouth and toungue vibrate a bit dont they? this is becuase the english "y" is an actual "y". the japanese "y", long ago didnt exist, and was really just "ia,iu,and io". to pronounce this sound, just make sure you dont feel the vibration

R-らりるれろ
there is to way to pronounce these:
In hyoujungo:
say "da" now with everything in the same position say "ra" if you did it right, you have just said the japanese "r"
in tokyo dialect-
in recent years, tokyo-ben and hyoujungo and seperated them selves with a curtain. so they say it a bit different:
り And ろ should be like hyoujungo's pronounciation. the rest are a BIT like "l"
*no one speaks true hyoujungo

W-わ(ゐ)(ゑ)を
if you mess up the "w" sound you will sound STUPID. becuase the ENGLISH W, ISNT THAT NICE Wink. long ago these sounds were "ua,(ui),(ue),it optional to say uo or o". When saying "wa" (or optional wo) bring you lips down from your upper teeth when the sound starts.

G-がぎぐげご
these are hard to explain. if you speak spanish, hindi *ahem*, anyother indic language or greek, this the same sound as in your language. if you dont,it is impossible for me to explain, you will have to listen and learn.
が- specifically in tokyo the PARTICLE "ga" is often pronounced "nga" you may also here "ari ngatou" occasionally.

Z-ざじずぜぞ
these as are pronounced like "dz" a little (the d has been slurred into the z, so you cant really hear it.)
じ- like shi, the deal with ji is that its based on zi.

D-だでど
these are softer than english, and your toungue should be touching your teeth.

B-ばびぶべぼ
same-o-doodly!

P-ぱぴぷぺぽ
not aspirated

F-ふぁふぇふぉ
these should be said like "ph" in philisophy. (yes ph is different from f 、Its lik Ф)

Bye bye for now, expect my next lesson to be on "ga" and "wa". oooo Giggle

Wow. This is really really nice of you this make up this whole guide for everyone to see, but in "Ai's Translation" there is a thread on Helping people with Japanese. I think this thread would be better fitted there, and I'm sure everyone else who's used that thread before would also like to see all these interesting facts you've got!

Hmm... well, you could copy&&paste this to the thread, and then pm eyn to ask if he can delete it. Or else you can just leave it here and see what other people say, since I'm sure some people might find it easier to find it on here.

I'll be interested to see that lesson..

Hardest sounds I think are the "r" sounds, "tsu", "su" and "du/zu"..

i second del's inteest in that lesson. particularly "ga" because i've seen it in some odd and confusing places.

i still have a lot of trouble pronouncing "r" correctly.

"tsu" was pretty easy for me when i started out, now its nothing.

"r" troubled me for while, but hanging around native speakers really helps, you might want to go to japan for a while.

wow, this helps...bunches!! Boogie
the "r" got me for awhile...but i think i've figured it out. i just have to say the new word a few times outloud, then i get it. sure i look like a fool, but it works, right? Tongue
when you say it slow, it sounds a lot like "l" or "d" depending on which one you're saying, you know?
and there were some of these that i didn't know about yet. i had no idea they were different. Shocked
oh, and for the "g", what do you recommend for an english speaker that has no way of listening to a native speaker other than jpop songs? Crying
you can go ahead and post the immigration tips if you want, but i'm only a couple months older than you. i have no idea what i'm gonna do with my life yet! Giggle
i can't wait 'til your next lesson! Boogie

watch j-dorama s on youtube i recommend :

kimi wa petto and Hana yori dango (live action, anime is icky gross booboos!)

you seriously dont know what you re going to do? i have everythin planned out. even breakfast.
i wake up exactly 7:00, take a shower, put on my clothes, do my hair, do my make up and then leave for school. then at 8Meow0, i have to be in class with my books open.
do you have a daytimer? or a blackberry? they are very useful.
they are some really good immigration tips too. though this tip is one that will let you dance around Abe shizno naked with you re gaijin card glued to your butt:
getting married to a japanese national.
but most of my tips are about a paragraph long, and avoid the "marriage topic" basically becuase not everyone s going to fall in love with a japanese national (and even if they do, not all of them are going to get married)

oh yeah and heres my lessons ive posted:

haha, nope. nothing planned out. i just live one day at a time, the school day goes faster that way Wink
hmm...i'll try those shows out. are they subtitled? or do you think i should watch them without subs and just use my mind to try and figure out the story?
i'll find a gorgeous japanese man to marry, who'll buy me lovely clothes in shibuya and we'll go to highclass dinner parties on saturday nights and live the goodlife in tokyo! (i'm kidding, of course Giggle ) hmm...who knows what'll happen? i'll get there when i get there! Smile
i'll check out your lesson, thanks!

Regarding the sounds き and み
i said the are both pronounced sort of like "kyi and myi" while this is true, for き you can just flat out say "kyi" without having to slur it a bit. my entire hsot fmaily did that. it sounds a like a cross between the k and sh sound.

if you do this with み though, you will sound girly. so its best to just palatalize the sound instead of actually saying "myi"

(For に、ひ You must specifically say the "YI” (So thats nyi and hyi に should come out very cutsey and meowey, and ひ should be hissy )

Lol, sorry this is off-topic but for Hanadan drama you can learn lots of bad words from Inoue Mao, lol. I mean, seriously... at first I watched some of the episodes sub-less but when I saw the english equivalents to the words in subtitles when I re-watched it... it was just like... "Oh... wow". "Lunch Queen" is also a good drama if you want something interesting, and it's funny.
