kerushiiai...
albums usually sell much better than singles. none of ai's singles has outsold any of ai's albums. albums are separately ranked on oricon from singles and usually sell much higher.
also about overseas versions i do not think they count. oricon counts only from certain stores. (by the way, yesasia is NOT counted in oricon as it is hong-kong based...i read this in jpopmusic forums and it has been discussed elsewhere and i looked at the oricon site too)
however need i point out oricon rankings do not mean everything.
i think late 2005/early 2006 was one of my favorite ai periods. LOVE COOK namely, i think... |

yeah, i can imagine that albums would sell better. i mean, so many new songs...
i suppose it's fair that they're ranked on a different chart than singles or else there would never be any singles on the chart!
so our ai purchases aren't helping her? that's too bad...
do you think they count kinokuniya? or, they probably only count sales from inside japan.
but you're right, of course, the oricon rankings aren't everything. i think ai's just happy if her music is heard and enjoyed by people |

@Mansley: I agree with you completely, Frienger and Yumekui gave me the urge to find more answers about Ai! I can't wait to see what tricks she's got for next year!!
@Kerushii: Well, it's reasonable enough for albums to sell higher because it's 11 songs against a single. |

well like someone once said to me, "leave the charts to the Japanese"...i am fine being what i refer to as "Oricon neutral"...i am just one more sale for <insert respective CD> plus YA is real nice with free shipping so i will stick with YA and just enjoy the music...the japanese may just do whatever and however the charts turn out is what the Japanese say. (Because my opinion does not have to match the majority of Japan, as it usually doesn't) |

eyn wrote: I'm honestly quite satisfied with the songs she has released this year, they are all of excellent quality compared to a lot of materials released by other artists. For example, all of the b-side this year are really cool stuff, "Amai Kimochi Maru Kajiri" is one of her best mid-tempo track to date, "tears" is definitely a-side material, then you have "Hanikami Jane" and "Hane ari Tamago (live ver.)" which are both pretty damn good. I was also more than pleased with the all the B-sides for this year. Especially in 'tears' case, I think it's strong enough to make it as a double A single. What bugs me is that people who don't pay close attention to Ai's music will most likely never hear these great songs. The A-side for this year was okay, but none of them blew me away like SMILY and Planetarium. Of course, the 2005 singles and 2006 singles have very different style and I certainly don't except Ai to hit it big with all her singles.
KerushiiAi wrote: and like i said earlier, illegal downloading is extremely common nowadays. I agree that illegal downloads is an issue, but I don't think is big enough to influence single sales. I think it's one of those culture thing. If I told a Canadian friend that I buy CDs, he'll look at me like an idiot. But if I told that to a Japanese exchange student or Chinese friend, they'll probably go "Yeah, I want to get that CD too." I'm not saying illegal downloads doesn't happen in Asia, just that there are people who will buy CDs to support artists.
Plus, I think a lot of us got into Ai through illegal downloads. And hey, I'm sure that helped rise Ai's sales over the years |

| I heard of KAT-TUN before many times, but i don't know they are so popular.Reason may be because they are not being introduced in singapore.Their sales is some gap away from even the second in the list.I should try listening to their music which is top-notch. |

how does the system work anyway? i've not been following the charts AT ALL, but it's quite a surprise to see planetarium at 99, considering that it's really nice, and was featured in hana yori dango?
anyway, i've never bought into the whole singles thing. some artistes like ai has an abundance of great individual songs, but i prefer buying albums where the songs are packaged as a whole, and really good albums sound so cohesive it just seems magical. |

It sold over 200,000 copies last year and made it to the #41 spot on the charts. This year it sold an ADDITIONAL 100,000 copies making it into the #99 spot. So this single has been on the top 100 charts for two years now.
It's her second best selling single, right behind Sakuranbo. |

^ it took a long while to finally get sakuranbo off the charts, if i remember correctly
@ Mansley
yeah, i dunno if chart positions really matter too much. even if our purchases aren't helping ai climb the charts, we're still supporting her, right?
@ Aprilis.
yeah, i guess illegal downloading is probably more rampant in the US and canada. but i'm not sure.
and you're right, i bet illegal downloading got a lot of people into ai's music. the thing is, will they buy the single/album when they know they can just download it? (or if they already have?)
i saw ai's albums available for download, but i didn't get the download, i bought the albums. i'm now the proud owner of all three of her albums, and plan to buy the fourth.
so yeah, you have a good point |

(or if they already have?) Since I got a paypal account, I always pre-order Ai' singles/albums on YesAsia. But I still download the mp3 files, because I'm too lazy to rip them out. Sometimes I'll purchase other artists' singles/album, depending on the price and quality. |

I'm so happy for Ai for making it into the top #100. It must be very hard due to the amount of competition in the music industry in Japan.
I'm glad but surprised Planetarium is still in the top 100. It must be really selling o.o
Overall i'm really happy with the outcome she's made this year, her range of ballad songs are so lovely, and Frienger, I wonder where she gets her happy ideas X3. Her singles are all of good quality coz most of the b-sides are considered a-side to me ^^. |
