I figured this kind of deserved it's own topic.
All of Ai's single releases this year made it into the top 100 singles of 2006 list!
#60 - Frienger/173,115
#66 - Yumekui/145,281
#75 - Renai Shashin/129,855
#99 - Planetarium/100,555
You can check out a translated list of the rest of the singles that made it here.
Or if you prefer untranslated and straight from Oricon, go here. |

| I'm actually pretty surprised that Renai Shashin didn't do better then Yumekui; I prefered Renai Shashin and it's flip-side. I'm guessing this is a really good thing? The heaviness of it is really lost on me because I don't know really know how hard or easy it is to get one the top one-hundred list. Thanks for the information anyways, madgirlslovesong. |

Thanks for the information madgirlslovesong! I really expected Renai Shashin to be on top but I'm glad to see my two favourites made it in! Well Jester, I can't really tell if it's hard or easy to make it to the top 100 either. Well I remember my friend who's an expert rapper made it to the top 100 on SoundClick and he told me it wasn't that easy. But sometimes in your view you would think it's easy but sometimes it looks hard. So it's a confusing thing really. |

| When you take into account how many singles are released during the year, I think it's a pretty nice accomplishment to have all of the ones you released in the top 100! Also, I think if Renai Shashin had been released earlier, it would probably be a bit higher up in the charts. If you notice, her singles ranked in the top 100 in order of release. |

Just like any other ranking system, I think the difficult/easiness to make it on the list depends on the competitor's skills and the overall competition. Say you've been drawing since a young age and you're really good in your class, it should only be nature that you keep winning class/school contests. But say one year, you decide to challenge yourself and enter a national competition. Your competitors' skills will probably be higher, and even 100x better than yours. In this case, you might not expect to win the competition with ease.
Getting back to the main point, I don't think it's that difficult to get into top 100 with Ai's status. I actually expected something in the top 50. I think HDF mentioned before that right now Ai should be focused at meeting certain sales mark with each singles. 2006 is definitely not a peak year for Ai, cause none of the single met the 200, 000 mark. But it seems that in general, record sales for all artists are going down. This might have something to do with the option of buying mp3 online. And looking at sales from big names like Ayu and Hikki, this really haven't been a "good" year for a lot of them.
On a more positive note, I'm surprised Planetarium made it at 99. |

I think a lot of the sales have declined as downloading has become more popular. I'd like to see a list of the download rankings for the year. I also think that part of the problem with the sales of singles is that there isn't really much special about them. You notice that some of the highest selling singles are ones with bonus tracks and two or three editions. Ai's singles just lack special content which could convince someone to buy them.

yeah, i would buy them more if they had cool extras coming with 'em. and not just the first press editions!
well, even with a list of the songs downloaded, that won't include the illegally downloaded numbers, which, unfortunately, is probably higher.
and it's awesome that planeterium is still up there! it deserves it though. |

Thanks for posting. I actually didn't know when the Oricon year ended this year, so didn't post it myself.
As everyone can see, not a very good year for Ai considering her 2005 was nothing short of great. None of the singles did great, only two of them peaking at #2 and Yumekui at #5. Sales didn't even hit 200k, and Yumekui and Renai Shashin didn't even hit 150k, which is disappointing.
The only good thing to take from 2006 is the success of LOVE COOK, but this years singles sales make me worry about the next albums sales..... I'd be sad if it sold less than LOVE COOK. Also, don't forget that JAM PUNCH Tour is the 5th all time best selling DVD by a female solo artist! |

Well, I'm not too concern with the single sales but on the other hand they do affect her as an artist, I'm sure. For example, why avex has decided to release her 14th single "CHU-LIP" instead of a 4th album might have a lot to do with Ai-chin's sales this year. avex is probably worried if her 4th album can surpass the excellent sales of "LOVE COOK".
I'm honestly quite satisfied with the songs she has released this year, they are all of excellent quality compared to a lot of materials released by other artists. For example, all of the b-side this year are really cool stuff, "Amai Kimochi Maru Kajiri" is one of her best mid-tempo track to date, "tears" is definitely a-side material, then you have "Hanikami Jane" and "Hane ari Tamago (live ver.)" which are both pretty damn good. The reason why they don't sell too well bothers me a little, I guess quality sometimes has little to do with sales.
I'm not sure when will be Ai-chin's peak year, I'm glad if it's yet to come and I hope she can stay on top for a very long time once Kumi's over. Oh well, maybe she'll never get to the top, you never know, but whatever. What I enjoy is her music, not her overall "ranking" in the industry. |

I think this is good insight. Any singer should be very proud if her CDs continue to sell over time, like these! (And of course her compan¥ will be happ¥ too!) |

thats true, her sells in sngles weren't matching with 2005 at all. but at least LOVE COOK did pretty good!
but its so hard to predict sells of singles now, a lot of well known artists' sells are also declining~ even if the song is really popular, somehow it doesn't reflect on their sells. |

I think new business model must include download phenomenon and some way to use this for profit. My unsolicited opinion. |

yeah, and like mentioned earlier, two of her singles were pretty recent releases. also, don't albums usually sell better than singles anyway?
i mostly just buy albums myself, but i'm planning on getting CHU-LIP.
there are many things that can be taken into account when determining why 2006 wasn't ai's greatest year.
also, last year had some of her really good songs released, and was a high point for her. no one can release a hit each and every time they release something new, right?
some of last year's singles were her best, i think. so you have to think about that too.
and like i said earlier, illegal downloading is extremely common nowadays.
same with legal downloading, i suppose
oh, and does the "overseas" version sales get taken into account when this is determined?
i pretty much only get the china release one |
