Though, when one thinks about it, theres nothing happy about the new year. Afterall you could place the day of the new year anywhere in the calendar. |

Actually much more sensible to have New Year Day on solar equinox or solstice day, these are events related to solar year and Earth revolution, significantly different from other days. I do not know why January 1 is selected, does anyone else know? |

New Year is put on 1st January because it was based on Gregorian calender. As to what is Gregorian Calender, this is the wiki link. Here
