| I've been wondering for a while and I can't find out anywhere! She sings the odd bit of english in her songs but I don't know if she's fluent or anything? |

She might understand a few English phrases or words, but I don't think she speaks English. Just check out "Birthday Song" for proof of that.
You never know, though... she may yet learn! |

She's more fluent in Japanese yes? Well, sometimes I'm happy for her to learn it or I'm happy for her to stay to her native way. She sounds cute when speaking Japanese. I'm sure she knows simple English words such as "hello", "yes" and "no" but yeah, its a mix-up.  |

sorry, but ai is nowhere close to being fluent in english.
have you ever found where she says "pretty voice" in well, "pretty voice"?
yes, she does 
i know that song's a little old, but like madgirlslovesong said, try "birthday song"
like the others have mentioned, i bet she knows basic words, and maybe a few phrases, but otherwise, nope ai doesn't speak english. 
it'd be great if she learned though 
but japan's schools supposedly have the worst english teaching program out of all the countries that teach english... that's just what i've heard, though. |

Well, they dont really need english.
Not many people immigrate out of the country because of poor living conditions. crime rate is very low, and only about 1% of the populus is in poverty. and they mostly live in tokyo!
It is a developed country, more developed than some of the other on the G8 or 7 (cant remember) |

who would wanna move out of japan??
but what about the businessmen who need to travel a lot for their jobs?
they would learn english right?
(of course ai isn't one of them  ) |

In Japanese schools we must learn English beginning during junior high school, we must study English for several years, depends on school. But we learn English very poorly because we do not understand true differences in thinking between English and Japanese! Big surprise when we move to USA and begin learning properly! Therefor: Otsuka did study English in school like all of us but probably she cannot really understand or speak this complicated insane language.
P.S. There are some good reasons to move away from Japan especially for a woman who likes technical work but no person can know these reasons unless already living out of Japan! Ai you are smart! businessmen who travel to USA learn English from special training in their companies! but many of them speak very poorly too. English is too much special phrases! |

でも、日本語は漢字があるけど・・・
Hanzi in chinese arent as difficult as they are in japanese. And chinese has like 10000 of them wherease japanese only has 3000.why you say? well, most kanji in chinese only have 1 readings, and only a rare handful have 2. In japanese, the grade one kanji, are they most common, but the hardest to remember. Here are all the readings in know for 一：
いち、ひと、はじめ、かず、てん
ANd 生 Has alot too:
せい、しょう、う、き、なま
Kanji like 護 are easy to remember, they only have about one reading : go
So, in conclusions, kanji make up for english's crazyness.
(well, not really, we spend the same amount of time memorizing weird spelling rules as the japanese do memorizing kanji) |

It would be nice if she knew it, but sadly not.
And... well, a lot of countries outside America and Europe (and Australia?) have bad English... I mean... well, that's it. But they have lots of smart people now. Besides the classes, it depends on how much you want to learn. Like my friend can speak it very well for her age, but her little sister is great for her age because she practices it a lot. Like when she didn't know how to answer a question she said? Yeah, lol, she asked a question then answered it... but anyways she didn't know how to say it so she kept repeating the words to herself, So in other words the people who are interested in English outside of school and want to be talented are good at it, and people who learn to the minimum to pass at school will be ok but never good.

| ai does not speak fluent english. but its not true that japan has horrible english teaching. take MIZ for example, she comes from HOKKAIDO but knows fluent english. aside from her being in germany? all the time, she still speaks fluent english! |

haha, yeah, i learned that japanese learn english in junior high, but most have trouble understanding it. i mostly learned that from reading manga
what kinda special phrases?  you mean like, things that don't make any sense unless you
know the language really well? like... "bottoms up!"
or... "his bark is worse than his bite"
you mean like those? there's a name for 'em, but i can't remember it...
i guess to us, the native english speakers, it seems like such an easy language. but, when you think about it, english is really weird. it's very...inconsistent.
and if you notice, many native english speakers make lots of mistakes when speaking english. like, when you forget something, and someone asks you about it, you should say, "i can't remember" or "i've forgotten"
but often, people just say "uh...i forget"
and i admit i've said that too 
but once you start learning a new language, you learn a lot about your own language. like how crazy the english verb conjugations are for the english verb "to be"
i'm learning french in school, and japanese kinda...by myself 
for a japanese person to learn english well, like tsumetai.ame said, they'd have to practice out of school a lot. also, it'd help if they had someone that spoke it fluently in their home, i'm sure.

| Hi, Ai! Yes I'm writing about English phrases like those! I forgot name for these, but such phrases have meaning that is not clear from the words! Also English has too many different times for action words! verbs, yes? present, past, future, and many many more! Of course Ito is right what she says, Japanese is sometimes difficult for foreign people because meaning of some sentence is often related to context of conversation, not to words directly! |

| I do think english is kinda difficult at first. And those complicated phrases are even harder. I don't understand some of them sometimes too, because english, after all, is not my first language. From experience, only when i live here in english speaking environment that my english improved to the point that at least people understands what i am saying, lol. So it's gonna be a hell difficult to learn it outside, and don't expect too much on Ai. |

"Cool as a cucumber" was the first one I ever learned in school, lol.
Actually it took me some time to learn English when I first got here... Oh man, the first grade writing! I spelled everyword in the sentence wrong!
But I guess it's pretty much harder for people in Japan because of sentence pattern? I'm not sure but even though people like from Taiwan and those aren't that good at it, the English and Chinese ones are actually pretty similar, since it's quite straightforward. And I also hear a lot of fluent Korean people, but I do not know much about that. |
