                  常用漢字!2級から始める!
Kanji have an official order, and according to the government , 1,945 should be learned school for daily use, and an additional 984 for names(人名用漢字). both are tested on the 漢検(AKA 漢字検定), a test conducted every year after your kanji education starts to make sure you can read them all.
BUT!!!!!!!!! Newspapers often follow this set closely, but there are many common kanji not included on the 常用・人名用 list (ex. 脊、誰、韓、呑). People have complained that these should be added, but the government doesnt want to hear it.

I F YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN KANJI YOU WILL HAVE TO POST IN THIS THREAD.

SO,after the next post, i ll start with your kanji training

Just a few usage notes:
Here is an example of a kanji

: イチ、 ひと
名乗り:かず、はじめ
英語: one

例)
一人【ひとり】One person
一代【かずよ】Kazuyo (Fem. name)
一度【いちど】One time, 1℃

(名乗り Are readings use donly for names. sadly, theres alot of kanji that have those. Also sadly, my stupid books doesnt include them, so i have to look them up over the internet, whoopdy doo. On a side note, japan uses the metric system, celcius, 24 hour clock, and has the steering wheel on the right.)

hi tatsuka! i am training in kanji on my own. it seems like an epic effort and the site i am using does not have all 1945 kanji yet but i hope they will when i get there. (although...it definitely doesn't have them for names as far as i know)
but i will stop by this thread regularly to supplement what i do on my own, i think the more exposure i have the better.

Just a question to ピンク~姫 do you learn kanji by need or by grade order?
I prefer by need, as lists seem to feed you less important ones first (also do you memorise kun/on yomi or just learn by context?)

This is really useful, thanks Tatsuka! And thanks for the links too, davedim. But I realised that there are many ways to pronounce just one kanji, so how do you know which one is the right one?

By need. For example, I know 牛乳 Reads ぎゅうにゅう But when i was typing up the readgins for 牛 I couldnt remember the 音読み、Even though, if you gave the word 牛乳 I would read it.
But on terms of being able to know all the readings of a kanji by looking at it, i learn that by grade.The its still best I STUDY these kanji as well, the kanji i know are well scattered throughout the grades, and there is one kanji in grade 2 that i do not know. BESIDES, sort of like my own 漢検, when your learning kanji , everytime you are done witha grade, it is best to prepare a test for yourself. Check which kanji from the previous grades readings dont come to you as quickly, or you cant remember all of their readings and include it on the test.

i am learning by grade order but i agree sometimes they feed me useless kanji. 「貝」 is the kanji for shellfish. WHY DO FIRST GRADERS NEED TO KNOW WHAT A SHELLFISH IS? (i am learning the first grade kanjis currently...i can feel smart by telling myself i'm going to learn a years worth of kanji in a month or at least try...or i can feel stupid by telling myself first graders already know this and why am i having so much trouble with it?)

@Tatsuka
after actually seeing you start to post the kanji, i realize this is going to be a bigger effort than i first imagined. but you are doing very good work here.

@davedim
I wonder why but i've never thought to put japanese textbooks on my computer. now that you've posted those it seems like a good idea. thank you sir, i will be using them from time to time.

Oh ok, I learn by need and then study the stroke order (don't pay much attention to other readings. However, I do look at the popular compounds for each kanji) If I need to know a reading for a kanji by itself I turn to wakan, rikai-chan or my Canon Wordtank ><
Also I haven't been bothered with grade lists, I think I'll just stick to need and learning readings as they come..

Well yes, The kanji after the 教育 Are very rare, and actually, some of them are evn rarer then the ones not on the joyo list. You will forgot the ones you dont need anywya.

And mansley, 貝 Is taught in grade 1 because of its simple shape and because its common.
Actually, the grade one kanji are hardest to remember because they have the most readings, and since you have a flood of kanji coming from all the other grades (and from the jinmeiyou kanji list) They become easY to forget.
