Oh yes, the ongoing debate: exactly who will succeed Ayumi Hamasaki?
As much as we'd all like Ai to be the next queen, we have to keep in mind that things really are stirring in the Japanese music industry now, I think, what with a lot of 90's artists really beginning to fade off and new artists rising up. (ORANGE RANGE came out of no where, for example, and now they're huge.)
Others have already mentioned equally viable candidates, like BoA, Mika Nakashima, etc. and personally I think it could go to anyone. Heck, even Nami Tamaki, who's being regarded as the Princess of J-Pop a lot lately.
Though...ultimately...doesn't it look like it's coming down to a battle of the recording companies? Avex versus Sony, right? Ai or BoA, Mika or Nami...
But before we start placing our bets, we must remember that Ayumi IS still "in power". It's already been said, yes, but I'm reinforcing it. Though she is starting to decline, anything's possible, and for all we know she could rise up from the ashes with a second coming. I mean, look at Namie, she certainly isn't doing badly as of late.
So, in short, I personally don't want to count my chickens before they hatch. The Japanese music industry has always interested me a lot, but right now really does seem to be a huge transition, and a difficult to predict one at that. I'm just going to sit back and watch, cross my fingers, and hope for something good. |

I think Ai can make it. Many people really like her and voted her as #1 to be your valentine and #1 prettiest (polls on CDTV)
I'm a big fan of both Ayu and Ai and I definitly think she's got more potential than BoA. |

Now that i think about it, i hope ai doesn't become the next j-pop queen. I mean having all that power/popularity probably changes people. I mean there's still going to be crazy fans over all pop stars. But people like Ayumi have been taken too far. Almost to the point of people almost worshipping ayumi. I mean if you look back like when she first started she was pretty different.
I was watching a CMTV special, it was a japanese program. It had the top 50 most popular guys and girls. It wasn't old, it came out in 2004. Aymui Hamasaki was number 1, BOA was number 4, Ai was number 41 . But remember that's when ai started to get popular(they played the sakuranbo pv in the background). I think if they did that this year ai would probably be alot higher up. I asked my japanese friend if he heard of ai, and he did. He mentioned acouple songs, like happy days and daisukidayo. But to the majority of japan ai isn't that popular mainly cuz she's new, but she's rising really fast.
There's still lots of competition from people like BOA, Utada Hikaru, Aya Matsura, Natsu something, hitomi, and others. Personally i don't think BOA can be the next j-pop queen. Mainly cuz she's already the Queen of asian music. Everyone over asia knows BOA and her popularity reaches America too. BOA does japanese, korean, american, and i think some chinese songs. She's an international pop queen. So i don't think she'll rule as the j-pop queen, cuz she's everywhere else. I hope Utada become the next queen, she's really talented and she'd fit the role well. I mean she's her whole persona is like the core of japanese personification. Plus her popularity reaches america too. She did come out with an american cd.
But i think Ai not being the next queen is probably a good thing. I mean she'll always have a good fan base but hopefully she doesn't let it get to her. I think one thing that kinda makes her less likely to be queen is the fact that she's from the osaka area. I mean there's nothing wrong with being from osaka, but most of you probably can't notice her heavy accent. It's kinda like a japanese country type accent. I'm not saying that she can't be queen but personally i don't think that the majority of japan would prefer a osakan queen. But that's just what i think. But i could happen. I think for being a queen you'd probably have to be more sexy then cute and i hope that doesn't happen to ai. People like BOA, Ayumi, hitomi, and utadu could do it. But people like aya and ai probably wouldn't fit well with them.
well that's what i think anyways. |

| i have this thought lingering in my head. if ai becomes the nxt jpop queen, wld she change her style and stuff like that and start singing ayumi-like songs? ayumi and ai r in the same label right? but whatever happens, i hope ai will still retain her bubbly-ness and style and i strongly feel that she is a jpop queen in her own style. |

Utada is too busy with her US Career to come back to Japan. Plus her genre is not purely j-pop. She's still relatively popular in Japan however I believe her influence will fade if she stays in USA.
But I do think Cetma is right in a way. Being the queen requires pleasing people's tastes and sometimes it is not easy as it seems. |

Okay, I'm not going to actually say anything about this, I'm just going to post it and see what you all make of it. (Besides, it's kind of late here right now, so if I did want to say something, surely it wouldn't come out right at all. )

Seems like a lot of people from Tokyo Nights doesn't like the fact that Ai beats Ayu, personally I'm totally cool with that and I'm proud of Ai too, being an Ayu fan myself. The survey shows how popular Ai is getting nowadays.
As the title said, it's Top 100 Girls, and when you say girls I think Ayu doesn't fit well into that category anymore. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the wording of girls and women in Japanese, but Ayu will win for sure if it's Top 100 Women, afterall one of her latest song is named "my name's WOMEN".
Ai is going big now, more people start to set their eye on this uprising J-Pop princess, I'm sure someday when Ayu is going to hand over her crown she will be happy to pass it to Ai. |

| hm.. that was an interesting poll list thingy, but i think eyn said it the best way and i think i'd have to agree. Ai would probably be J-pop princess. I think she'd probably be better as a princess. suites her better |

| Yeah but also note that it was which girl would you like as your valentine or something like that. However it's nice to know that she's one of the top singers for this position. |

Ayumi has full arena with 30.000 people I think that`s to much.
Ai shoudn`t have such a big arena.
I like Ayumi but these two are very different people.
I hope Ai will nerver be a Diva or someone else.
I like her for her naturalness. Alos I think Ai's market is not as big as Ayu's...
Ai mainly attracts High school students, but Ayu also loved by adults around 20-30 and also her Asian market.
(Well, though I'm Ai fans...however, I don't think she can attract Asian like Ayu...coz she's "too cute"...uh..I think )
p.s.My first post here~ha~ |

| haha yeah i don't think ayumi is that pretty either. I think her eye's are too big and round. Ai's really cute though, i like her face alot, but i didn't like the way she looked during like sakuranbo days from the way she looks nowadays. She looks super cute like in happy days and smily. how old is ai? 21 right? 20? i think she's 2 years older then me. she was born in 85? |
