I really don't like all the photoshop things they do. I don't mind just a bit, that's with almost every picture. But Ayumi's's so easy to see that it's photoshopped, and than I don't like it anymore. Or Ai, I think she looks great without all the photoshopping, maybe even greater. Just because it's Ai herself and not a programme that makes her look different No
I think the latest promo picture looks better than the CHU-LIP picture, because it looks more naturally to me. I'm also used to see her that way and not with blonde hair and everything so that could also be the reason Tongue
But still, I think that natural pictures are much better than photoshopped ones.

the big deal is the extreme way it seems to be done in japan.

but when there is a 15-20% variation in the size and shape of the face, based on an alignment of facial features, this goes way beyond any notion of "enhancement". then you have a different face. the irony is for all their efforts, avex are not making any improvements with what they are doing. so you have to wonder what the point is. but perhaps others disagree with me here. does anyone think the CHU-LIP or the latest promo picture is an improvement on how Ai looks naturally?

I think it's extremely done all over the world. See Madonna who is extenstively photoshopped in so many magazine covers to make her appear younger. I was watching a tv series last time about a girl who was in a magazine company. They were photoshopping every single aspect of this girl's body and face. Our country has also caught up this trend too so I suppose many countries are liking the idea.

I guess it's a matter of percetion. Japan is well known for providing a "fake" [for a lack of better word] image, especially for stars and idols. Kumi looked pretty natural until she became big and suddenly her appearance radically changed.

Personally I don't mind it. I love the whole crazy atmosphere of CHU-LIP and I found the covers fun, while providing something new. The new image looks fairly okay too imo. But then everyone does have opinions I guess and some would hate it. It's just a matter of taste and how you view the idea of photoshopping. It would more matter to me more if they forced Ai to release music which she didn't approve or did not fit her personality but since she composes all her songs I'm pretty sure she's happy about her musical direction.

The problem is that Ai is a pretty huge artist so avex has to constantly try to come up with ideas so Ai remains pretty popular in Japan. This might mean providing a different image or style over the time so fans would not get bored. Might not be admirable to go wild with photoshop but it seems it works since Ai's sales are pretty good and she's pretty big in Japan.

I agree with Rinoa and most here. It's the entertainment industry, photoshopping is bound to happen. I don't see the big deal of it *shrug*. And I think on some pictures the photoshop looks better, some look weird. It happens.

I say as long as you can recognise the artist at first glance, it's fine.

^ same here^^, I think all photo promotions stuff involves with manipulation and editing using computer programs~ it's just to make the picture more unique in a way ^^

but I agree that sometimes it can be annoying seeing a bad edit~
[sometimes it could be the photographers fault- you know the lighting and shading can change the whole facial]

I dunno...touching up is normal these days. As long as Ai-chin and Ayu continue producing excellent music, I don't really mind. And like Ayu said in an interview, she is a product. All celebrities are products. It's necessary for them to change their look. I mean, the Barbie of today isn't exactly what it was when it first came out.

Ayumi Hamasaki's face is known to look almost completely different with her hair pulled back for some reason. (Look at Beautiful Fighters or Alterna PV)

And she is VERY clever with makeup, and I think Ai is too.

I dont think there is too much photomanipulation gonig on here ...

i thought i would resurrect this topic to make an observation about some recent photos. Ai has posted on instagram what looks like a "selfie". i am assuming that because it could have easily been taken by her. but what is interesting about the photo is that it looks to me like it has been manipulated.

if you compare the folds under her eyes with one posted by a radio station a few days earlier...

i suspect that all photos posted on social media by Avex artists pass through the "Image Enhancing Department" at Avex.

another observation is that imageshack is not the reliable image hosting site it once was. the other images in this topic have gone to a digital graveyard. Sad

I think she probably just edited the picture with an App like BeautyPlus. You can do everything with it: Change the shape of your face, make your eye bags disappear, etc. If you do it right, it doesn't look unnatural either.

Lighting makes a HUGE difference to how a person's face could look. Her facial expression is also different in those two photos, so don't jump on the photoshop wagon yet.
