i always thought there was something weird about the promotional photo released for CHU-LIP - the one below on the left. and when i compare it to the most recent one on the right it is obvious to me it has been manipulated.

to prove this i scaled both pictures to match in size amd overlapped them in photoshop - making one transparent. then i adjusted the degree of transparency. then i thought i would like to see the transition. so then i created an animated gif of the transitions. you can see it here (646 KB) (the small cross-hairs on the cheek is what i used to align the images.)

i lined up the eyes and the bottom of the nose. the animated gif is quite revealing and confirmed what i suspected. the jaw line and width of the face is completely different.

there is no justification for this sort of manipulation. it is completely unnecessary. the same person at Avex is probably responsible for this picture of Ayumi Hamasaki as well

i dont need to overlay that one with anything to know the eyes are completely unnatural.

Axex should be condemned for this stupid behaviour. Mad

Well...I mean u can't really condemned Avex for this. They didn't photoshoped Ai until she look really different. Touching up of photos is really common nowadays. And the altering of jawline, enlarging of eyes using photoshop is pretty common.
And maybe theres another possibility is that Ai-Chin had slimmed down. The time of the 2 photos taken is quite far apart. Hence there is quite a big different.

I agree, touching up to photos are really common these days...I guess as long as the result doesn't turn out "really weird", I think its ok.

but if the touch up made ai-chan's face totally weird...now thats a big problem~ Tongue

Well photoshop is techincally a part of creating an artist's image. It might sound as if they're overdoing it but in the end we all know that Japanese artists are based on image. I guess one might argue that avex is using too much photomanipulation but in the end I don't think it's quite a big deal. It's done all over the world.

Ayu's eyes are her trademark but imo it's only clever makeup techniques and not photoshop. Makeup tends to change a person's face completely.

And I must agree with what most people said here. It's not so different from applying make-up or styling hair. All avex is doing is creating an image for Ai.

Anyway, she looks similar in the CHU-LIP film clip, so it's not ALL Photoshopped.

I heard that Ayu had her eyes operated on to make them wider and more European-looking.

^That's just another false rumor. Her eyes were huge since she was a kid. Her mom's eyes are also big.

OK, so it's not true.... I guess there's a few Japanese girls with large eyes.... like Rio Matsumoto. She has beautiful eyes.

slimming will not change bone structures in the face.

it looks weird to me, so i guess it is just a matter of personal taste.

it cannot possibly be only makeup. her face has been changed completely. here is a picture of Ayu where the eyes have been "enhanced" by makeup only.

i guess it is just me then. i think it is way different.

I have to agree that the editing done on Ai's Chu-lip promo shot is really awful.

The ironic thing about overuse of makeup and photo retouching (we see plenty of both in the Chu-lip promo shot) is that Ai would probably look her cutest when she first gets out of bed in the morning with messy hair, no makeup at all, wearing some ugly old T-shirt. They went to all that effort, and they just made her look a lot worse.

A little bit of subtle makeup can highlight certain features, but obviously they went too far in that shot, even before it got retouched in Photoshop. It's always clear when the hand of man has spoiled the true essence of something that's naturally beautiful.

Ai-chan is a bit of a chameleon: she seems to change her "look" with every new single or album. I agree she would look beautiful just out of bed Smile but then I like all her "looks". I guess it was just the latest idea from Avex that she had to go with.

Eyeliner tends to create tricks with the eye, making them smaller/bigger. There the focus is on smoky eyes so obviously eyes become smaller.

Here's something pretty similar from alterna pv. However although her eyes are rendered bigger they are smaller simply because the eyeliner is less intense than her A BEST 2 photoshoots. Also the rest of her face is pretty much the same. As I mentioned before Ayu's trademark are her huge expressive eyes. Also in the A BEST 2 photoshoot she's opening her eyes wide.

Also I repeat that I fail to see what is the big deal with photoshop. Not all artists are a natural beauty and also they might have had a bad day, so they might need some tweaking here and there. Also an artist's image helps to leave people remaining interested in an artist. I love how natural Ai looks but to be honest having all photoshoots with Ai looking just "natural" or "cute" would bore the hell out of me. Unless you're Hikaru Utada, you won't get away with not focusing on your image too. It's just a photoshoot, it's not like she got plastic surgery or something.

As for the CHU-LIP photoshoot I am pretty sure that all the exxagerations were done on purpose. The theme for this single is pretty crazy so obviously avex wanted the cover artists to go wild. I mean Ai wore a blonde wig and had this huge kiss mark on her cheek. It's obvious that they wanted to create something eyecatching and humorous and not capture only the "cute" element of Ai.

They've already tried something similar with to the bedhead style with Momo no hanabira and something similar to natural with Amaenbo and Renai Shashin. I think avex would rather fit these styles for her ballads as if to portray a more real/personal side of hers. It's just the way marketing goes, promoting different images to leave the fans interested.

She's a J-Pop artist so it's pretty much a must that she's required to promote different marketable images and also promote herself on tv programs and magazines. (especially with avex) For this reason she might also provide a pretty superficial image (makeup, photoshop, deal with some obnoxious/boring presenters, pretending she's interested in her tie-in..) I don't think Ai minds. If she didn't like it she'd probably do like OLIVIA and move under cutting edge, avex's indie's sublabel or something.

I totally agree, that it looks weird. It looks like different people just with similar faces (not in shape, though). I think she´s naturally beautiful, so there´s no need to make her face "better".

have a look at this, then see if you want to reconsider any of your above comments. (images aligned on the inside edge of the eyes and the top lip)

No I don't want to reconsider my comments. There are some differences in make up techniques between these two photos which explain it.

In the alterna photo it's pretty evident that her eyes are slightly half closed while in the A BEST 2 she's definately widening her eyes wide open on purpose to maximise her eye size. She uses this techniques on most of her photoshoots in this era.

Also in the alterna clip she clearly has less eyeliner and mascara. A BEST emphasises on dark eyeliner & mascara to create the illusion of larger eyes and the makeup utilised in A BEST 2 is used to enhance her eye size. For the eyelashes case they probably utilised some "long lashes" mascara product or they even stuck fake eyelashes on her. The large eyelashes also create the illusion of a larger eye size.

avex might have slightly tweaked with her eyes but I think most of the credit goes to clever make up techniques. I'm into makeup a lot and I have eyes similar to Ayu but due to makeup and shadings I can manage to make my eyes look much larger. I'm sure Ayu has the top make up artists Japan can offer and they can manage to do an excellent job.

A similar style (except she's not widening her eyes) is used in BOY where her eyes look almost as large as the A BEST 2 photoshoot.

Last but not least I still do not see what's so terrible about utilising photomanipulation. It's another form of art and artists are aware of the fact that their images will be photoshopped. In the end these images themselves promote Ai to sell her music. Japanese are addicted to an artist's image and reputation (apart from the few exceptions). So are many westerners. I'm sure some of you got into Ai because you thought she was cute. It might not look genuine but I'm happy enough that Ai's music sounds genuine, at least in an industry where the mediocre mainstream usually sells. Also Ai is appreciated by a fairly good number of people for her talent also but probably most of her fans were attracted by her image in the first place.
