Here's a translation of the Barks interview. Credit goes to Celsius005.
--
These past 2 years have been both difficult and happy. I’ve truly done my best.
Q: [Your new single [CHU-LIP] has been the talk of the town lately. It’s really quite a blast.]
A: [So I see (haha). The word has traveled far. My last single [Ren’ai Shashin] was very sincere and serious so I thought a more fun song would serve as a nice change of pace. It was very comfortable.]
Q: [Which direction does the sound lead?]
A: [Perhaps more rock; it’s a song to dance to and have fun with.]
Q: [With the addition of blaring horns the song becomes very active and busy. However despite the wide variety of sounds, the overall sound stayed under control. To achieve that sort of balance is truly miraculous.]
A: [I always try to tone sound down a bit. For example, when I want to hear the strings I adjust the overall sound to accommodate for the audibility of what I want to hear. Those preferences can be heard in many of my songs, just as I like to fill all empty spots in more upbeat songs.]
Q: [The ‘mystery of genetics’ is very Otsuka Ai-esque concept found in the lyrics. I find it rather amusing.]
A: [Whether it is done out of passion or work, sometimes you just don’t know why some things turn out so well. I think this concept can be found somewhere in there.]
Q: [Yeah, there are those times. And you discuss this concept in terms of genetics.]
A: [Yes, that’s the mystery. Behavior that seems to be taken from our parents is one mystery while the differences between an idealistic man and his realistic wife are another. Surely this is the mystery of genetics.]
Q: [This song comes with an exciting dance as well. I can see it in the PV.]
A: [We had to really work our dorsal muscles for some of the camera angles, but the photoshoots were very easy. I prefer singing and dancing to go hand-in-hand.]
Q: [And after that single comes your first best album.]
A: [I’d like to take listeners back a little with my previous compositions. It’s nostalgic and for this reason I’ll have everyone listen to them. I can also look at myself taking my first steps and say Wow I’ve come quite a ways. It’s a considerably dense compilation.]
Q: [What are your current impressions of the 13 recorded songs in your best album?]
A: [I thought my debut song Momo no Hanabira was super-good, so naturally I remember how unpleased everyone was around the time Kuroge Wagyuu Joshio Tanyaki 680en was released. I hope for a consensus (haha).]
Q: [Ahaha. The main characters of those two songs certainly are different.]
A: [Afterwards when I released [SMILY] everyone was pleased with the girly image, which I still question. However when I listened to the song again I could hear that my voice was very much so. It’s so loud and annoying that you wonder where it all comes from (haha). Listener feedback for [Planetarium] consisted of comments such as “It’s a really good song” and “It’s become very important to me.” I listened to the song for myself and thought that it shined brighter than any of my other works. This is a definite plus to song writing. Each song carries its own weight, thus the swelling of feelings expands.]
Q: [At any rate it’s color is impressive when compared to average works. To conjure a single image is something not easily done.]
A: [That’s right. I believe that the fun style of [CHU-LIP] is possible only because I had my other works. I wonder if this has earned me the image of someone who undertakes a variety.]
Q: [Your upcoming CD seems to be accompanied with a DVD containing all PVs as well.]
A: [I think the most tearful of them would be Daisuki Dayo.. In contrast you’d get a laugh out of Kuroge. Also a new LOVE MUSIC PV was inserted for this special occasion. While the others may be worthless, I want everyone to see the hidden reflections on life (haha).]
Q: [Does this album serve as a turning point for you?]
A: [This album contains neither Ren’ai Shashin nor CHU-LIP so I don’t think so. It’s more of a celebration or festival above all else.]
Q: [I see. However is this not the one opportunity to look back on your two years of activity starting from your debut to [Planetarium]?]
A: [You’re right. These past 2 years have been both difficult and happy. I can now say I’ve truly done my best.]
Q: [Well then, any final comments?]
A: [A tour is scheduled after this. I want this to be a satisfactory live with plenty of laughter and moving moments. I have many things in store including self-accompanied singing so I’d like everyone to get a taste of that. Oh, and we’re also planning the use of some very outrageous gadgets. It’s something you’d lay eyes on and say “That’s so stupid!” (haha) That said, have fun everyone!]
