Update 7/23:
Apparently this release has been cancelled, as stated in the CDJapan email received by Shibo. Now the CD has been replaced by Jazz featuring Ken Hirai and Fukuyama Masaharu's CD has also been replaced by Jazz featuring Utada Hikaru.
How dissapointing!

wow, this really seems promising. though i can't really find it say that ai is going to release it. it can be an instrumental album by some jazz group making covers of ai's songs, like kenny james trio did for hikki. seeing she just released a best of album i'm very doubtful that this is going to be a release by ai. but this is great anyway! more ai music, and she doesn't have to do anything for it. (that is... if i'm correct). |

they have this idea again to earn some bucks from Ai fans.
oh come on?! making some of Ai's songs in Jazz version. i cant even imagine it.
i shall stay away from this one. i prefer the original songs. |

| If this is real, I think its a really bad idea. I mean, some people aint really satisfied with the recent Ai am BEST album already, then you come up with something like jazz with ai's songs which i think wouldnt sound right. Avex needs to try harder. |

| Jazz? Er.. I donno how this will fare. Maybe they are trying to reach a bigger audience. I would've loved orchestral arrangements. |

what's up with the bad mood in here? i absolutely agree that orchestral arrangements would've been awesome, but jazz versions sounds cool to me. i actually wish ai would make more jazzier stuff like Tokyo Midnight and Hon Maguro Chuutoro 300 Yen (Midori Iro). i'm really looking forward to this, i just hope that ai doesn't have to work with it so that she can concentrate on new stuff. that's my opinion. |

hmm, I think I'll pass on this. I prefer some new material...since I've been listening to "Ai am BEST" a lot lately...I don't really want to listen to the same songs but with different arrangement. not saying this is a bad idea or anything, but I rather have a new album soon. |

Well I don't think it's related to "bad mood", more like a matter of personal taste. Some people just don't like jazz so much. Personally I find jazz to be snooze-worthy, but that's just me. Also these kinds of albums pretty much flop in most occassions. This is why Ayu has quit releasing remix/rearrangement albums and Ami Suzuki's remix album was a flop. The remix/rearrangement era is kinda over so few people pick up these albums.
Usually only diehard fans pick them up and it's not enough. The people involved are usually professionals and consequently they are paid quite well. So avex remains with more losses than gains. I'm not completely against this album, I mean if avex wants to invest money and experiment I don't have a problem. But yeah.. I'm not really crazy over this release, especially since jazz is not that huge in Japan, and I won't purchase it anytime soon. |

....ahem, if i might correct that..I'm not saying that you're wrong i got your point.
But it's may not be seen on the list all the time like oricon, and the other list that there is.
but there's a quite huge demand and group of listeners for jazz in japan actually, In WW2 postwar era. The Japanese Enka music and other musical styles adapted jazz in it's concept and it's quite popular even today. Soil Pimp & Sessions is quite popular and know in Japan as well in Europe. Sleepwalker, PE'Z, Tokyo Jihen, Shiina Ringo...Tokyo Ska Paradise, Yuji Ohno....etc just to name a few.
They all have been selling quite good on Japan and many of these have held number one spot or the second, even though they aren't mainstream artistes or bands.
So i don't see a nothing bad for Avex releasing this Otsuka Ai jazz album,
the different thing is will it be good for masses to like it or to not like it........
and to the bad mood,
It's like the way as rinoa said...all people cant have the same exact taste, and it could be also because Ai really haven't had touched jazz genre much..so there's always a danger that it doesn't turn out good and that's bad for Ai but even more for Avex. Enough of my ramblings, This is just mho. But probably i don't buy the album even though
i like jazz more than anything...but if its good then i will get it but i don't really know,
even when Ai has a talent...i will wait before i say that do this album have a potential at all or not. |

Yeah, I get your point. They might be fairly popular but are they mainstream? Most of the artists you mentioned are not exactly what one would call household names as much as Ayu/Kumi/BoA are. Japan's major sellers are pop, urban and some rock right now.
I don't see anything wrong about this album either but I'm still doubtful about how will this album fare. First of all I'm afraid avex won't be investing a lot of money in this album. They've lately lost a load of money from their "movie plan" and Ai hasn't exactly sold that well compared to her previous years. So yeah, it's possible that it won't be a high budget thing. |

to tell the truth i'm a bit intrigued by the idea of a jazz version...
much more than by dance remixes .
Personally i'm not dislike jazz and this experiment could turn out to be a pleasant surprise since some of her songs already show interesting hint of jazz... |

I think everyone misunderstood, this is not an official release i.e. this is not an avex release. The product code is TKCA73213 and it is in fact released by Tokuma Japan Communication. I reckon this will be an instrumental album, played by a jazz band in a jazz style.
Overall this should be a good news for everyone, now we can have the chance to experience Ai-chin's songs in a different flavour, what's there to be angry or disappointed about this release? This is good news, let's all accept this fact and look forward to hear this Jazz album when it is released. I'm sure it will somehow find its way to tracker or this forum, though we should really just purchase the CD if we like it.
I quite enjoy jazz (Norah Jones, anyone?) so I'm actually very excited about this release! Now there's one more way I can introduce Ai to some of my other friends who like Jazz and find J-Pop too hard to consume. |

thank you, eyn. i wasn't sure if it was a non-avex production (since they got the rights for the songs, right?), but i was pretty sure it would be an instrumental album by another group. and as you said, there's nothing to be disappointed about, just extra stuff.
and i love norah jones. and matsuura aya's new jazzy album "naked songs". |
