Based on the PS2 game and novel, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
Synopsis:
In a quiet and mysterious village called Hinamizawa, Summer is early and it is the 58th year of Showa. It's population is 2000/- and hence is known to be cursed by their local 'God', Oyashiro-sama. It is in June that we see a young male protagonist, Maebara Keiichi, as he moves into this cursed village. There, he soon meets new friends Ryuuguu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Houjou Satoko and Furude Rika.
Every year in Hinamizawa, a festival called the Watanagashi Festival is being held. The bizarre thing is that one person dies and another disappears due to an unknown trace during this festival every year. Is this due to a coincidence or a curse? Would you do anything to uncover it or accept the mysterious fate of Hinamizawa?
Characters:
Maebara Keiichi - Our lovely and straight male protagonist who goes paranoid in almost every eerie situation he hears. He now holds a bat for protection.
Ryuuguu Rena - She's adorable and happy-go-lucky at all times, but she has a dark and scary side. This side of her is revealed when one mentions Oyashiro-sama in front of her.
Sonozaki Mion - Daughter and Heir of the Sonozaki family, an important family that belongs to Hinamizawa's Three Great Houses, Mion is the matured one in the group.
Houjou Satoko - This adorable girl has a secret-- she has family issues which she dares not tell.
Furude Rika - Heir of the Furude family, another important family that belongs to Hinamizawa's Three Great Houses. She's the only child who has lost her family and is calm and collected about certain Hinamizawa issues. But a secret lies behind this adorable personality of hers..

I love this anime! It's so dark and mysterious and there's blood violence! My favourite character has got to be Rena. She's the most scariest and most adorable to me.  Gotta have her hatchet!  |

I found the first season for this anime was so confusing until the first answer arc appeared. Most things are explained by the second season making it nowhere near as scary as the first one though. Despite that, I found it really interesting and it had me hooked til the very end. The third season is gonna air next year in February so that is definitely something I'm looking forward to!
Oh, the comedy involved is pretty funny as well. This was the first mystery/horror/thriler anime that I watched so I found it strange that there'd be comedic elements involved. In the end it was all good though. Gotta try Mion's batsu-geemu (punishment game) sometime  |
