Title: ライフ
Title (English): LIFE
Format: Renzoku
Genre: School drama
Episodes: 11
Broadcast network: Fuji TV
Broadcast period: 2007.06.30 to 2007.09.15
Air time: Saturday 23:00
Theme song: LIFE by Mika Nakashima
Synopsis:
Adapted from Keiko Suenobu's manga "LIFE," this drama delves into the dark side of high school life. The story focuses mainly on bullying, but the manga also touches on subjects such as self-mutilation, suicide, and rape. Kitano Kii stars as Ayumu Shiiba, one of the students bullied by a group of classmates led by Ayumu's former friend, Manami Anzai (Fukuda Saki). -- Tokyograph
My Opinion:
Is anyone else watching ライフ【LIFE】? Perhaps more accurately, does anyone else find it somewhat horrifying, yet must watch the next episode? I'm torn between getting angry at Shiiba for not going to someone for help and even more angry at those who should be supporting her: her mom, her teachers, . . .
From gleaming other forums, it seems that there is a whole イジメ genre and it has me rather intrigued. Enough that I've ordered the first three manga volumes. (Now if only DHL would stop misdirecting things, maybe they'd arrive.^^;) |

I'm watching LIFE too! In fact, I find it really good. Not only are the actors/actresses really good at their job, the plot just gets me completely hooked. I say it is much better than the other doramas right now like Hanazakari!
I agree that the whole ijime scene in Japan is really horrifying. It saddens me that what happens in the drama is not necessarily exaggerated and could be happening this very minute! I wonder why this is so especially in Japan where suicide rates are especially high for students than in any other country.
Anyhow, the 6th episode is really, really freaky. It scares me how much someone could do just to take revenge. And poor Shiiba, who is torn between letting Katsumi leaking out the photos of her and the torture by Manami and gang.
I really like Hatori's character. I love her independence, and also how she is so beautiful. The first time she appeared in the show sitting on the roof she looked like an angel to me! |

I am watching it. I find it easier to watch than read the manga. I could only read about 4 volumes then I had to stop it was too...well..REAL LIFE. Katsumi gives me the creeps
But it still addicting to watch though. The manga has won a lot of awards for its realistic portrayal of "ijime" in Japan. Which I didn't know about until recently, so makes me thankful I didn't take that exchange student offer in high school..... |

I can't handle watching individual episodes anymore . . . too stressful! I'm going to wait until the series is finished, then watch 9-12 back-to-back.
See, isn't the willful suspension of disbelief fun?^^ |

I really like this drama, but when I think the other side of it, this is all happening in many schools. I absolutely love this drama. I've watched "Our Textbook" which talked about the same topic as LIFE. But LIFE is on a more serious note. I literally freaked out watching the first two episodes. But I realized that the drama was sending out an important message to the students who are being bullied or watching it happen to their peers.
I would categorize this drama my No.1 favorite out of the all the summer season Jdoramas. I would definitely encourage people to watch it. |

I've been watching LIFE, too, but only with the raws, since the subs aren't available yet...but I've read a few volumes of the manga, so I understand mostly everything. Plus, LIFE is so visually based that it is fairly easy to know what is happening. I watched Watashitachi no Kyokasho, too and I agree that both are rather horrifying. LIFE is more in-your-face about it since it is what is happening at the moment, whereas Watashitachi no Kyokasho attempts to deal with the bullying after the accident happens. so I wouldn't say that LIFE is the more serious of the two; actually I feel like Watashitachi no Kyokasho is more serious since it is on a professional level - the courtroom.
I like Hatori's character, too. she is very strong willed and it has passed onto Ayumu. It also surprises me a little that Ayumu was able to overcome the bullying and trying her best to rebel against it. I'm guessing that the majority of bullied students don't overcome it like Ayumu and that is why they resort to suicide.
well, hopefully the subtitles will come out soon and I can rewatch it |

^ Actually the subs are out till Episode 9 streaming at Veoh! You can access it through this person's profile page. I expect he/she subbed it himself.
I'm excited to watch episode 10 when it's out! The preview from episode 9 seemed so good!! |

I have to agree that this dorama is definitely one of the best this year. The ending is kinda sudden and lame IMO, I'm wondering if the manga ends the same way. If I have time I would love to review this for Ch-Ai blog, or if anyone here is up for it just send a draft to me. |

| ^Yep, it's still going on. The drama just ended in its own way. I'm hoping the manga will end differently from the drama too, since that didn't give me much satisfaction and left me hanging. |

finally finished watching this drama with subs last week. some things made more sense when I finally watched them with subtitles...
What I really like about this drama and its approach to ijime was its thoroughness. It really covered all the elements of bullying, the causes and why it continues, key problems with society that can trigger it and it even briefly touches on a few other subjects. It really makes you think!
if you haven't watched it, you're seriously missing out!! |

I've seen this too and...well, it was really good although it's a little nerve-wracking
I think it really shows a lot of aspects concerning bullying and how serious it can be, so it can open one's eyes
nonetheless I was kind of happy when I finished the series cause by that time, Katsumi's psycho character and his looks really gave me the creeps >_<
and Manami's smile...it's really fitting for the role but I found it sooo annoying
nonetheless, I would recommend this dorama...it's touching and relentlessly captivating! |
