Synopsis:
This dorama is based on a manga by Ryo Kurashina with the same name. As a warning, this dorama is not exactly suitable for a younger audience, since there are several references to adult material.

Tachibana Ayaka is an intelligent student and talented artist with a promising academical future. Her mother runs a snack bar to keep them going and is the person who insists that her daughter should have strong values. Ayaka has never known who was her father.

However her life is suddenly ruined when her mother becomes gravely ill and they lose their only source of income. Realizing her mother's and her life had been exploited by powerful men, Ayaka's driving force becomes her desire for revenge. With this sole reason in mind, Ayaka aims to become a "Jotei" in the nightlife scene by working as a hostess.

The episodes are riddled with the typical nightlife in Osaka, where wealthy and prosperous men visit these clubs. Naturally since competition is high to make the wealthiest men as their clients, the hostesses live in an environment of spite, jealousy and backstabbing. As Ayaka rises up as a hostess she comes to realize that so do her rivals...

Review:

The first episode turned me a bit off to be honest. It seemed like a low budget school dorama, which disappointed me. Also seems they wanted to chuck the story of her life in the first episode, which made it rather slow paced and a bit boring. However the following episodes were much more appealing as they developed into something more complex and enticing as you could almost see how a teenage girl rapidly grew up and started living on the desire of revenge. It was also really interesting seeing what happens in clubs and the whole "rules" set out.

Ayaka is a complex person, because one can notice how kind she is with strangers and people who are suffering. However she is also capable of being manipulative and calculative. Her most important choices always involve those which are most profitable to her and she certainly shows how she seems to be fueled by people who try to put her down. At first Kato was a bit too mechanical in her acting and her expressions were kind of stagnant but she does improve a little as the series progresses.

Shota does a great job once again, playing the dark personality. His attitude fits well with the personality of Naoto, who initially starts with sinister intentions. In any way he once again does manage to act so well that it's a shame that he doesn't get more screen-time! Certain actors come off as a bit mechanical but the others pull if off quite well.

I also loved how they showed both the glamor and the ugly sides of the nightlife scene. Superficially most men will simply see elegant clubs, expensive drinks and luxurious girls. However the audience also gets to see the true colours of these girls and how they strive to become even more popular. High class and low class interaction and distinction is quite prominent .

In the end the drama is very interesting and an attractive change from what I'm used to watching. It's dark and dramatic and probably will not be enjoyed by a wide audience, but it's really well made for those who enjoy darker series.

I've been watching Jotei, too and I really enjoy it so far. one thing that irks me about the writing, though, is that all the mama's are so kind to Ayaka and the parts about the hostesses being 'ruined' are a bit too dramatic. The leads are really good and I wish Matsuda Shota had more parts, too! Jotei is definitely one of the better dramas this season.
