I think this would be a good idea because not many people use the Chat anymore.

Nobody is willing to wait around in an empty room, basically.

Also, it lags a lot.

IRC is better because you can pretty much lurk on it and talk about things in your own time.

Channel Ai has a large enough userbase for a pretty active IRC channel.

We could even link the current Chat to a browser-based IRC client for those that don't know how to use IRC.

What do you guys think?

EDIT:-

IRC channel now up!

Server: irc.synirc.org
Channel: #Channel-Ai
Port: 6667

Hmmm, I'm quite puzzled dave, what exatly is an IRC?? Confused

Well whatever it is, it sounds good. I feel bored just waiting in the chat room for someone to come by. No one uses it much anyway like dave said. Nod

I think itīs pretty clever idea. Since many people, including me, uses IRC whole day, so I think more people will use it.

@Carlito
Well, to describe it simply, itīs something like a conference in MSN Messenger. Instant messaging, without refreshes make it better than chat. And you usually use an external program (mIRC, zIRC, Miranda IM (Thatīs the one Iīm using, because itīs ICQ, MSN and IRC in one)...).

I can make a tutorial for setting the IRC up, but itīs useless until we have a channel. Smile

Sounds like there's some support for the idea then. Smile

I added a poll to the thread.

I'd be willing to be channel operator but maybe eyn or a mod would rather do it?

Ooh! Sounds good! Nod I'm in! But we'll just have to wait until eyn says his word. Nod

I personally like the idea. Smile The current chat system doesn't work out too well, and waiting for others to join the current chat room is probably not the most enjoyable thing one could do. No Lack of sound notification is yet another problem with the current chat.

Is there any IRC server that you guys have in mind? I did a little search and it seems that jpopsuki is using zirc.org as their host. I'm pretty new to IRC myself so any idea about which server we should go for? What are the selecting criteria?

Also I'm not that familiar with "owning" a channel on an IRC server, how could it be done exactly? Implementing a web-based client should be easy enough. To encourage participation, I would like to set up an "official" chatting timeslot where people could join the channel during that time period to increase the likelihood of having lots of people in the chat room at the same time (the more people the more fun isn't it?).

Well, I think that zirc.org would work fine. About owning the channel, I donīt know whether itīs the same for all servers, but for the server where our Czech Asian Music channel is, it work that way:

1. You create the channel by writing #Channel_name
2. You can chat now, but if everyone leaves the channel, itīll be deleted. So youīll need a bot, whichīll be online 24/7, so the channel is online permanently.

I suppose itīs the same on zirc.org server. Maybe someone has some experience with that server?

zIRC isn't zIRC anymore.

I'd suggest synIRC because that's where most of zIRC's admins and members moved to after they had some "differences" with people on zIRC.

I've set up a channel at #Channel-Ai@irc.synirc.org if you want to use that.

I've created AiBot who will block swearing and spam and auto-op eyn and whoever else you want to be channel operators once they've registered.

That is, if you decide to use synIRC.

Good idea! To be honest, I never really liked the Chat Room because it lagged too much and most of the time there wasn't anyone in the Chat Room anyway. IRC would be much more accessible. Nod Good luck with setting up the channel!

Yeah, I reckon IRC would be a great addition to our forums. The chat room's lags really gets on my nerves. For example I see my name on the chat room list when I'm not even on it. And I didn't really like how it would log you out automically when you're idle for a few minutes. Oh, may I ask, does IRC have like statuses like "busy" or "away"? That would be good. Nod

Server: irc.synirc.org
Channel: #Channel-Ai
Port: 6667

an IRC channel would be better, cos the chat room is like always empty for me. And also, Im on the IRC all day, so joining another new channel-ai channel wouldnt hurt.

IRC server selection normally is just on personal perference or it normally follows a group pattern ( like most anime channels are on rizon, etc) maybe a criteria to consider would just be the server stability and sometimes the way their channel and nick bots work. But since davedim has already chose synirc, we can try it out for now.

About owning a irc channel, normally, the server would have chanserv bots which handles the registration of channel and as such matters relating to channel stuffs. different server might have different chanserv bot names, but most uses just chanserv. Also different servers might have different requirement for channel registration, but most can be easily registered by a single registered nick. About registering your nick, its pretty much handled by nickserv or as such. For more info, you can type /msg nickserv help, or /msg chanserv help. Hope this helps. Smile
