OK, continued from the post a screenshot of your desktop thread...
sljinu wrote: Do you need Administrator Privileges or something to install that thing? I tried a few days ago, but I couldnt get the themes to work. Can anyone help? I d/led the rar. file, opened it, opened the .msstyles file, and then I'd get the Display Properties to appear but then nothing seems to have changed. I'm assuming we check Windows and Buttons right?
Administrative Privalidges? What do you mean by this?
We have a system what I believe you are referring to at school, disallowing the installation of software, etc. so you may well not be able to do it, as an admin may block standard users from editing system files.
The patch itself shouldn't be that difficult to install, did you install it? Without inserting the XP disc? As that would mean that the new style would not be selectable in Desktop Properties>Appearance if you didn't

Wow, good site - I have changed my XP appearance now [here]
Thank you!

Oh good. Yeah...see, my guess for why it doesn't recognize iTunes tracks being repeated is because iTunes (in an effort to make a seamless playback) is set up so that it fades the last 5 seconds or so of the song you're listening to into the beginning of the next song. But if you're on repeat...it fades into itself again, and...yeah it's kinda hard to explain, but it's weird , trust me. I know there's a way to change that, but somehow, I don't think it'd help. hmm
Oh, I can't believe I forgot to ask earlier, how big is the file I have to download?
---
nope it doesn't. i once listened to the same song a lot of times too, but it ended up scrobbling it one time. and god, i hate that fading stuff, don't understand why anyone would want it.
Hmm, that's really bad
And even worse that you cannot change this
foobar2000 installer (ver. 0.9.4.5.) is 1.62MB, although components can take up quite a bit of space on the HDD (well, 9MB ), so my \program files\foobar2000 directory is about 13MB overall, so not much really

Yay VLC!

@ Tom
Thanks for moving this
.....
Yeah, it is really bad. It sucks because you don't know it won't work until it's too late.
And manual repeat is such a drag.
Wow, it is small! Only thing is...I'll have to import my whole library and possibly fix tags on many songs...OH NO and then there are the ones that I burned in with iTunes or bought on their store. Do you know if foobar can handle uhm.. .m4a files? That's the file type iTunes encodes them with. So that only iTunes can use them, because Apple is evil. |

Erm....I think foobar supports m4a....let's see....

Yep brilliant
So yeah, I've never used any m4a files, but it should work fine
I guess you have an iPod though? I don't, so that's most probably why I use neither iTunes or m4a files
Anyway, the tags shouldn't be a problem I would think, but the library might be a pain
You're gonna have to re-build that I would say, I'm afraid

^ Well, I glad it supports them at least.
But yeah, when I got my video iPod, my library was in shambles from neglect, because my nano was too full to hold most of the music I had. I spent 2 days fixing it then
And that was only about half of what I had then. My library's size has pretty much doubled (at least) since then
But when I have free time I could work on it...it'll take a few days though
Since it's wikipedia, do you want me to upload an .m4a file that you could try out to see if it'll open and play it? Wikipedia is notorious for false information and such... |

^ Ok, I'll up a file once I finish downloading this one other file
I may as well upload like...an OLIVIA song or something for you
EDIT: Ok, here's an m4a file~
mediafire
I chose Stars Shining Out by OLIVIA. Hope it works, it's a good song.
Oh yeah, it was pretty rough...
But your library was much larger, so it probably took just as long.
Oh gosh, yeah, I use wikipedia for pretty much all my homework too. Usually the info is good. Just sometimes it's not cited or something...or someone thinks it's funny to edit a page with a string of random cuss words. |

Yup, the m4a file worked fine! Woah though! What a great track! Will have to find some more by Olivia me thinks
This it?
Anyway...kinda lost what we're supposed to be talking about
OK - Foobar
Right, I will help you set it up soon if you want? Just say when....

^ Oh good, I'm glad it worked.
I'm glad you liked it, she's not extremely famous though, so her stuff isn't as easy to find. However, I have her whole "The Cloudy Dreamer" mini-album, if you want that though.
Also, in the OLIVIA thread here, you can get a few things like...
a little pain PV
Wish -full single
Those were both uploaded by eyn, so they're on the server, and the links should work. By the way, those are links to the posts in the thread.
And actually, this is OLIVIA.
Hope you have fun with those things...
And anyways, back on topic~
-----
Where can I download foobar by the way?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found it at foobar2000.org So I'm ready to set it up when you are. |

Sorry I haven't replied for a while - Have had school work
OK, so on my Last.FM page you said you had installed foobar? That's cool
Right, I'm not really sure how you want it to look but I thought you might start with an iTunes-like User Interface? If you don't like it, then you can always change it with relative ease...
So, I have uploaded a folder of all the stuff you will need here. The folder also contains a readme.txt file, which should explain everything you'll need to know (I thought writing it on here would take up well too much space ). I guess you are familiar with *.zip?
http://www.mediafire.com/?5etcx09vkan
I added some components that allow you to sync. files to an iPod (I think it only works with classic and Nano though ), and also a CD-ripping plug-in. Haven't tried either yet, so I dunno how buggy they may be
Anyways, we could always try a different UI if you don't like it! I don't use anything like this, but I thought you would prefer something similar to iTunes I really don't know....
I swear I have forgotten something Mmmm....just say if something looks wrong
Tom
-EDIT---
Oh OK, Now I know who OLIVIA is
I haven't had much of a chance to find any more of her stuff but I will have a go at the weekend - Will listen to those above later soon too Thanks |

Yes, I downloaded and am now using foobar! I'm working on fixing some...typos (?) in the song titles, artist names, etc. But it's going well
Ok, thanks, I'm downloading the file now.
I got a little help from davedim last night, and so I have Cloumns and Rows (?I forget if that's what it's called) UIs, and right now I'm using columns.
Yeah, I like the columns UI interface, it looks similar to iTunes, so it's pretty easy for me to use. I guess I'll just browse different skins and stuff later. I should sort out my library first
@ about OLIVIA
Yeah, also, if you're looking for info on Asian media stuff, a good website is wiki.thppn Obviously, it's like wikipedia, just specifically for Asian media, I believe. It's great for finding album artwork, and sometimes even lyric translations! You should check it out.
Ok, have fun!
Also a tip, she did a lot of stuff for NANA (the anime), so you could try looking for music from that too, because OLIVIA's stuff will probably be around there somewhere. |

@tdclarke:
thanks for uploading that link for foobar.
i think i will try it out too!
*edit*:
i'm now a fan of foobar2000!
i tested it and also tested iTunes
foobar2000 used 50-70% less memory than iTunes
and often didn't even register on the gauge for cpu usage, because it was using less than 1%!
and i customized the "Columns UI" interface so it's really compact and i set the window to view menu --> "always on top" so i can change the playlist and tracks while browsing the web or doing whatever. |

^Great hiro
I think maybe you mentioned it a little while back somewhere, but for a while I have been meaning to try out Songbird, and today, I finally got round to it, and I must say it is brilliant! I prefer the customising technique of editing the UI via CSS, which I have some knowledge in, and actually feels more of your "own" music player because you have edited in such a way - Or at least I think so
Anyway, as you have become a foobar fan, I have become a Songbird fan I may even become to prefer it to foobar (and after one day, me saying that it seems very possible ).
I have just been trying to get birdscrobbler working with it, and it seems to be working, yay
Anyways - Thanks
p.s. you'll have to post a screenshot of what your UI looks like I would, but I have hardly changed it as of yet - But I will |

^ sweet! glad that you like songbird. i used to help those guys test it and fixed a mini-bug for them back in the day so they sent me a t-shirt
i definitely share that feeling of having your very own music player, browser, or whatever kind of application once you customize it.
that's why i always go straight to the preferences/settings/options whenever i get an application so i can figure out all the hacks, tricks, and kinks to get the best possible setup and experience.
my browser is so heavily customized that it really feels unique and fresh
i still use iTunes to set up my library and add new songs, but then when i want to just listen to music, i open foobar2000, drag a playlist of songs from iTunes over to foobar2000, close iTunes, and press play!
enjoy using songbird! i haven't used it in a while, but now that they have a new version out, i think i might try it out again. |

Yeah, I do the same thing. When I want to mess with music on my iPod I usually still use iTunes because it's just easier that way. Also when I rip CDs into my laptop I use iTunes. But I haven't listened to music with iTunes in like, forever. |
