In a recent survey, research firm Oricon asked 2,000 people, "Which celebrity has a wonderful voice?"
Among male celebrities, popular actor and singer Masaharu Fukuyama ranked first. Akira Kawashima of comedy duo Kirin came in second, followed by Shosuke Tanihara, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hiroshi Abe. Akira Nakao and Leo Morimoto tied for 6th, ahead of Takuya Kimura, Gackt, and Koichi Yamadera.
On the women's side, actress/singer/seiyu Keiko Toda topped the list. She was chosen partly for her range of voices in anime, which includes Matilda from "Mobile Suit Gundam" and Anpanman. Nanako Matsushima, Yukie Nakama, Sayuri Yoshinaga, and Masami Nagasawa filled the rest of the top five. Hitomi Kuroki tied with Miwa Yoshida for #6. Erika Sawajiri and YUI tied for #8, while Ai Otsuka and Hikaru Utada tied for #10.

i agree.
Ai's voice is not her greatest strength, but she certainly has a good voice.
Ai's greatest strength is her ability to write and perform music that warms hearts and brings happiness to many. |

Agree! Also from the concerts and live performances I've seen, Ai's voice improves more and more. |

Nice job Ai-chin! I think her voice is very sweet, so I can see why it's #10. |

This is one of the most ridiculous oricon ranks I've ever read about. Erika and YUI on here, c'mon. First of all Erika sucks at singing and has no great vocal strength; YUI sings a bit better but she really can't compare to Ai nor Angela Aki (not sure why Angela isn't on here); and Utada might be really popular but her vocals aren't even that great anymore, the least to say they ever were.
I dont' hate the artist previously stated but these oricon rankings are really whack. |

I don't agree with it either, if you've seen the concert of YUI then you notice that she kinda screams with songs and not really sings
One person I do miss on the list and that is Mika Nakashima, she can really sing *wow* even though I don't like all her music.
Last time Utada sang Live was I think with Beautiful World and I still think she has a nice voice |

I agree this! I did not know MIka Nakashima until recently, but I am astonished her voice! she is only Japanese singer I think has voice comparable to Celine Dion, who is best voice in this Earth. I believe Five Great Voices Of Japan =
Namie Amuro (R&B, pop)
Hikaru Utada (R&B, blues)
Mika Nakashima (rock, blues, show)
Tomiko Van (rock, jazz)
Aya Matsuura (pop, jazz, show)
Please listen their music! Their voices are the perfect of their style! I also agree, YUI is not great voice, although pleasant voice for rock and folk music, still not like Tomiko Van or Nakashima! but sweet and she is outstanding song writer, like Angela Aki, and YUI is my personal idol! Erika, although I like her for actress very much and I like her songs very much, she is not top voice either, no question.
Voice is gift of gods, although skill is because practice practice practice! |

I really really agree too.
YUI writes great songs so it sounds good! Since her instrumentals are so good you don't focus as much on her vocals. and ERIKA is... she has a really good voice (to me; she seems like she has no lives so I can't say for real) but doesn't really know how to use it. She doesn't even write her own music (actually it doesn't seem, she doesn't even play instruments, right?) so I don't think she'll ever really be able to explore all her ranges. I have to admit, long long ago I stopped liking Ai but as a singer alone she is really good! I'll also admit all of her newest songs have been really really disappointing to me, and although I don't think she's necessarily really one of the best composers, she is one of the best singers. On the other hand, I think YUI is good at composing, but not so good at singing. |
