Ai is a singer-song writer and avex is not known to support singers like them. They are more like a idol producing label, release a lot of songs in a short time and get their fame up as possible.

i look up her discography, 4 albums in less than 4 years. that number seems like impossible to do for a singer- songwriter that writes all her songs. For sure, some of the songs are going to be rushed through and the quality are going to suffer.

It pretty sure it's the label that forced her to choke out songs like that and i think its hurting her.

Hm I think you raise up a good point.
Although Aichin has been writing songs for years, and in an interview I think she mentioned she has 80-something songs stocked up? For example, Renai Shashin is a song she'd written quite a while ago/before its release.

Ayu always writes her own lyrics and she sometimes composes her own songs as well. Avex supports many different talents and its marketing strength is second-to-none. I think in many ways Aichin is lucky to work with Avex.

well, she did start writing her songs when she was 13, so, like caffeinated said, she had a lot already written. which explains the 8 month gap between the first and second album. but the gap between her third and fourth studio album is 21 months, so i dont think you could call that a short time.

she has said in an interview that she sometimes experiments with the arrangement of a song for quite a while and only when she is happy with it will it be released. that also goes against your suggestion about Avex rushing her releases.

it is hard to tell from a distance how thing work at Avex, but my impression is that Avex recognise they have a unique talent in Ai, and give free reign to all her creative endeavours, including her writing, publishing, graphic designs, and LOVE. i am sure these are all her ideas, and are not imposed on her by Avex. i see Avex's role as providing support for the things she chooses to do and as long as Ai continues to be successful, i see no reason why this will change.

so, in answer to your question i would say yes, Avex is the right company for her.

and you think she should be in WHICH record label???

because if she moves on to EMI or Sony, theres not much of a difference between Avex...
now if we're talking about...lets say...Toys Factory or Pony Canyon, they're smaller companies and they don't have AS much market power as those top 3 labels...
If ai-chan was to go to the not as well known labels...she would have to work on even more songs...creating a bigger rush...
For ai-chan, Avex is good submitted the registration form to Avex pretty sure she wants to be there for a reason...

I agree with pon pon and believe that Avex is the right company for Ai. I believe that Avex supports her and that she has creative control over her music in all aspects. I would even go as far to say that she even has control over what covers are picked as her CD covers and the pictures chosen for the booklets. Even her PV's too. She probably pitches the ideas for them. When I see some of her Single Covers and some PV's I can't help but thinking "That is just so Ai Laughing

Avex gives a good amount of promotion for her too. I don't think that she is overlooked or overexposed. {Now although I like Koda Kumi, Embarassed I feel she is overexposed, too many best albums, an album every year over 35 singles, too many gimmicks, her new ablum has a PV for every song, rushed material probably due to Avex so not the company for her} back to Ai, I feel that she is in control of her career, even enough to have her bunny LOVE Chan have one too. Laughing

I don't think that her music has been rushed to any degree. I don't think Avex is hurting her career either, I feel that there more of a help for her. As far as sales go, I don't think it has anything to do with rushed material or quality, More people download now a days, It's the age we live in. Imagine if everyone who downloads Ai's music actually bought her CD's. The numbers would be amazing!! Nod Look at artists like Ayumi Hamasaki and Namie Amuro back in their early career there singles would sell over 1 million some over 2 million, Now look at their sales today, their still popular just sales aren't what they use to be. People didn't have mp3 players and ipods years ago.

Back to Ai, Ai has many fans, and I believe it has alot to do with the company she's with, because together they made good decisions concerning her career.

I completely agree. Avex kinda has a bad image for making "fake" singers. I have talked to both Japanese and American J-Pop listeners and many say that they hate Otsuka Ai. Because she is fro Avex. And Avex singers aren't really singers. They alter their voices, and they don't write anything. When I tell them that that isn't true with Otsuka Ai, that she DOES write the lyrics and does the arrangement they are super shocked. I don't think that she should switch though. People just have to find out, and not go by the way she looks. (cuz' she always looks really nice, and you can tell AVEX spends a lot on her) But I think that Avex giving her lotsa money and freedom are what an artists wants the most. If she was with another company they may not have let her do the CHU-LIP video since she already had a "cute" image with Sakuranbo.
People judge either by the looks, or company first. I've even done. I for the longest time refused to listen to WaT cuz' I thought that they were a Johnny's group. But then when a friend told me that they weren't, that they had actually TURNED DOWN being scouted by Johnny's I listened, and now I love them!

I couldn't believe anyone would actually CARE an artist under which
Anyways...AVEX is considering (in my opinion) the best music production company in japan and some other areas in asia.
Despite AVEX release at least 2 versions of the same thing (and sometimes it's good news, sometimes it hurts-->reacall not so long ago, ai-chin's LOVE PiECE album has 14 versions... Surprised .), they tend to have good bonus for the first press. Every time I receive my single/album/dvd im always satisfied...
This doesnt happen much any more but ai chin's album and singles used to come with awesome bonus for the first press.

Avex is the perfect company for her. If she were to have limits on what and how she could do things with her career, her music wouldn't be the same, will it? Sneeze

Avex is wide distribution, nothing bad about that! and allows much creative freedom, but helps with arrangement and recording in every way, nothing bad about that either. Management company relationship is like family relationship, but can be better because we usually are not allowed to choose our family!

The only bad thing about AVEX is that sometimes they "overdoes" an artist too much.
Use koda kumi as an example. She's releasing so many things in such as short period of time. Fans may be happy and keep asking for more but what about the quality and variety?
I think ai-chin is so far so good, just not much new songs on her album otherwise good.

^^ in another words they outsell them, so they can moneymilk every penny
out of them,
when they have created a good media image
for this artist and they know becouse of this,
some people are blindlessly buying everything, that has told or done by the
artist. And i'm not talking about Koda Kumi or Ai or none...just in general sense

No wonder why, during that session many times the variety and the quality of the end
product is lower and lower release after release. That's sure a bad thing about big record labels
where they basically rip you off, if you dont have money and sing on the contract that you are free to do what you is the same thing, with some composers they compose a song,
and then record label wants to buy it, and when you sell it, bam you are not anymore the owner of your own writen piece atleast in juridically sense.

Hmm, I would have to say that Ai Otsuka and AVEX do make a good pairing.

I don't want to say it's the perfect company for her just because I have seen artists switch labels in the past and I have yet to see how Ai-chin would be promoted or sell under another label or if there would be any changes to her creative level. So because I don't have anything to compare, I can't justify it's the perfect choice.

However, I do agree with Pon Pon in that, if she were to be in another label (especially any of the big four -- EMI, Sony, Universal or Warner), I don't think there would be a significant difference unless they wanted to take a different approach in marketing her on an international level (we have yet to truly see this at this point and time).

Face it, right now Ai Otsuka (music wise or even if she wanted to pursue acting) has yet to be marketed internationally. I think they have been working on marketing her in not just Japan but more so in Asian in general in the past two-three year or so. The rumors of her having a possible concert(s) in Hong Kong fuel this assumption further because as of right now all her concerts have been in Japan no?

Furthermore, I say she has yet to be internationally marketed because honestly, if you are not a J-music fan, it's unlikely that you even know about her (Ai) music. Right now Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru or even L'arc en Ciel are somewhat households names in the Western countries for various reason. I personally believe it's the huge tie-ins to popular video games/animes. But that's just my theory.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand, I think Ai had her specific reasons for choosing AVEX. It could be many reasons from their image to their ability to present an artist to their influence in the music industry to their network.

AVEX has been around for some time now and it may be that Ai-chin likes the main vision that AVEX has for their artist. She may like the network of people that AVEX knows in the music industry because if she wants to experiment with various styles, sources of support/inspiration ect. are available to her.

Although I do not know the specifics of the contract between AVEX and Ai Otsuka, my personal impression is that AVEX has treated Ai well. Like Pon Pon and remblue, I also think she has a significant amount of control over her music, and how it is presented to the public. And presentation is a HUGE thing in the Japan culture (i.e. food and general packaging for items).

I sincerely think that Ai Otsuka is happy to be working under the AVEX label (but hey I could be wrong). So unless something changes drastically I don't see her switching or even thinking about it.

I do think that it will be extremely interesting to see how AVEX will market/promote Ai on a more gobal level but I think that's a few years away (more or less).

Lastly, I just want to say I think it's a bit extreme to not listen to an artist just because they're unders a certain label. That's like saying you won't play a video game because they are under a certain company or only on a certain system ... okay that comparison is a bit abstract. I guess what I'm trying to say more straight out, don't judge a book by it's cover. The content inside might surprise you.

AVEX has had some some incredible marketing strategies (if they didn't they wouldn't be where they are now and be able to back the artists that they do). But I do understand that some of their tactics has been flawed or badly executed (i.e. how they go about promoted Koda Kumi these last couple of years). Still, if you're going to past judgment on an artist, listen to their music (and not just one song) before bothering looking to see what record label they're under ... but that's just what I think.

I just hope that marketing or anything else like that won't effect her creativity and ability to make her own original work with full effort and quality.

Honestly I've been somewhat disappointed with some of the songs she's been coming out with. Some of the melodies sound kind of generic and I've been kinda wondering about what the cause of that would be.

I mean, maybe nothing's going on with that and that's just how she wants it but idk. Just saying.

I think Avex and Ai have a pretty good relationship, for now at least. Many of their artists are either over or under managed, but I think overall they've done a good job of marketing Ai while letting her keep creative control.

Also, being in Avex gives her the opportunity to work in other fields aside from just music. She's been able to do things like her LOVE project, use her own graphic designs in calendar and in her videos, act in and contribute music to Tokyo Friends - other companies would probably not be able or willing to fund these ventures.
