As you can see I haven't been posting for quite a long time. The reason for that is I have my own stuff to work on, and I usually spend time here and there managing the blog and updating those WordPress plugins I wrote. I do frequent the forum and trying to keep things in order. Also our moderators are doing a great job keep everything in place, so props to them! Nod

Here I'll try to write about some of the ideas I have about the forum, blog and gallery in general, and I hope you guys can actively give me feedback to give me a better idea which direction should I take. fyi, these are just some rough idea that will take a while to put into action.

Forum

phpBB3 has been released for quite some time and I have been thinking about updating the software that powers this forum. There are several direction we can go from phpBB2, I can either upgrade Ch-Ai to phpBB3, vBulletin or Invision Board. The latter two require license so I will have to pay for them, but on the other hand they should offer more feature and stability due to the fact that people are paid to work on the product.

fyi, you can have a feel of phpBB3 by visiting Rinoa's Crossover forum, vBulletin by visiting AHS and Invision Board by visiting Hello!Online.

I'm not too sure which direction we should go right now. I have no experience dealing with any of these product so it will take some time before I become familiar with them and offer custom forum styles like what I've been doing so far. Is pretty custom layout a big turn on or you guys doesn't really care?

The current gallery we are using have integration with phpBB3 only, so switching to vBulletin or Invision Board means we are going to have another gallery system. More details about this in the gallery section of this post.

If you guys have any idea regarding the next generation Ch-Ai forum, please make a comment and we will discuss and pick the best direction to go with.

Lastly, I decided to open the download forum to all registered members from now on. Until we have a serious leeching problem, the download forum will continue to be open. The reason for this is that I do not have the time to maintain our regular list and I do not want our contributors to stay out of the circle.

Blog

I would like to extend our blog to cover more areas, such as interview translation, lyrics translation, J-Pop news, weekly single release information, weekly Oricon chart etc. In order to achieve this, I would like to look for volunteers to work on any of these new areas.

Here's some of the quality that I am looking for:
  • Strong interest in J-Pop
  • Enjoy writing and interacting with others
  • Enthusiastic and with good communication skills

If you have all of the above qualities, please apply to be a blog writer (contact me or Rinoa). You will be exposed to some of the latest blogging feature and gain a general understanding of internet publishing and protocols. It's all cool and you have everything to gain and nothing to lose!

For those of you translators who are willing to share your translation with a wider public, please apply as well and publish your own translation to our current blog. Interview translation are most desirable as it often gives insight into the composing process of an artist.

I'm looking forward to hear from some of you and hopefully the blog's staff list can be increased dramatically. It will be fun with more dedicated people in the team! We'll see how this goes.

Gallery

As I said earlier in this post, if we do switch to vBulletin or Invision Board we will need to change our current gallery system. I am not sure if that is a good idea seeing our gallery is bigger than ever, occupying 1.30 GB of web space. I will need help to do the switching if that happens to be our final decision regarding the software for next generation Ch-Ai.

For the gallery access, I decided to reopen the gallery for all guest users. Many people are asking how to access this and that which can be annoying sometimes. As long as nobody files any complaints to our host regarding the gallery, it will remain open from now on. Guest user will have access to resized images (max 800px in height or width) and full resolution will available to all logged in users.

Hope everyone's happy now and I'm looking forward to get some feedback regarding the forum software to use for the upcoming switch and volunteers for the blog to make it the best English J-Pop blog in the world! Boogie

Hi eyn!!...I think we should stay with phpBB ..because we are already used to it....I lke it more than Invision Board or VBulletin..and I think it's easier to use..
I tied to use VBulletin for my forum..and I didn't like it..it was difficult to use... Confused
And if we change to VBulletin or Invision Board...will they support the themes that we already have here?? Confused ...cuz i think not, and you would have to remake the themes for the new forum.

So..I voted for phpBB3 Smile

i've always been a fan of phpBB since I discovered these types of forum solutions. it's readily integrable and easy to use, so phpBB3 ftw!

thanks for creating and maintaining this forum and the blog Smile

Well, I personally think phpBB3 is the most visually appealing forum software out there, so I'd go with that.

You might want to check out SMF though.

For those of you who remember the ancient VIP system, all regulars are now upgraded to VIP, and there won't be a manual list of VIP anymore. pon pon will be in charge of the regular list for now.

If you are a regular and haven't downloaded any of those VIP files, check them out now. Smile

VIP files so far (if I didn't miss anything):

btw, keep the feedback coming, personally I think phpBB3 is a great leap from phpBB2 feature wise, so free software doesn't necessary means it's lacking feature of those paid forum software.

Nice to see you back Eyn! Boogie

Can't really say much about the forum as I don't really know much of the tech-stuff behind it. However, I would suggest that you just stick to the one that makes your job the easiest. I suppose that if you wanted to upgrade, upgrading to phpBB3 would perhaps make the least amount of work for you? Well, I have no idea on this subject so I'll shutup now.

For the translations, I wouldn't mind giving it a try but I'm sure there are many others who can do the job much better than I can. However, if you don't mind some second or third-rate wannabe translator (such as myself) giving it my best shot, then I'd be happy to translate some interviews!
As for the subject of the interview, it can be any artist right?

And regarding the VIP system, I found myself still unable to download the Channel-Ai videos. I just type the same username and password that I use to log in to the forums right? However for some reason it still doesn't allow me access.... Confused

sljinu, you need to get the username and password here.

And for the translation, I believe you're just being modest. And yes it can be any artist, but I would appreciate it if you can translate some mihimaru GT or Ai-chin related articles. Nod Giggle

I voted for phpBB3. I think that there's no need to change to another programme, spending a lot of time and also money. Changing the Gallery will also take much time.
Another good point of free softwares is that most ppl get used to them, as they are free and widespread.
I myself use phpBB3 and like its look and features. Smile

Blog
I would like to help but I know Japanese not good enough and my English can be a trouble sometimes. Plus I'm busy managing my site. If you need some reviewer for Thai music, call me, okay? I'll be glad to help.

Yeah, more feedback is what the site-makers really need. Me too.... Sad

@Eyn: Ah I see. Thank you! As for the translation, I guess I'll have to try and find some interviews...it can be from TV shows or magazine articles etc right?

Wow eyn, thank you very much for making us regulars VIPs! Boogie I'm really not familiar with these forum styles but I hear phpBB3 is more enhanced so I voted for that. Nod

Hmm, I might contribute to the blog, we'll see how it goes. Wink

Personally speaking I find phpBB3 really good and easy to use. I like it because it looks so sleek and elegant.

With regards to the blog, it would be a nice idea to have more features included. I've been trying to be more active on the blog but I'm kinda busy myself with a load of other things. However I'd be happy to assist any new members who are interested in the blog Smile

sljinu, you can find Japanese interview easily on several websites, particularly excite music, ORICON, barks etc. If you want to publish your translation on the blog, please send me or Rinoa a PM. Wink

ic210, being a web developer I like to work on new designs too. Too bad time is always a constraint and since we are at the verge of switching the forum software, it is not wise to invest too much time on a theme that won't last long (porting might be doable but it's better to start working with next gen. forum software IMO).

Rodri, the review can be anything from J-Pop, J-Rock to K-Pop and perhaps even C-Pop if you wish. If you or carlito are really interested, again, contact me or Rinoa and we'll get you started.

Ree-chan, thanks for the feedback. Seems like phpBB3 is the way to go for Ch-Ai based on the feedbacks so far. And for the blog, I wouldn't even dare to ask you to put more effort into it simply because honestly, you worked way too hard and I couldn't even match 1/10th of the effort you've put into writing great articles and contributing to the blog. You're just the treasure of our blog (and Ch-Ai for that matter) to put it short!

I'm not familiar with versions of forum and gallery. But if the final decision is to move the gallery, I'll be more than happy to help with the move anyway I can.

As for the blog, I like the idea of expanding it with more topics. Lately I've been running a few opinion pieces in my mind but can never find the time to write it out. I'll be finishing my BA by the end of this year but I'll definitely have more than on my hands after April since I intend to take it easy with my studies after this semester.
But of course, I really hope to finish the few articles that I've started a while back before working on anything new. Hahah better late than never, right? Tongue
