Hi remblue! It is nice to meet you! My opinion The Five Great Voices Of Japan:
Namie Amuro - R&B
Hikaru Utada - R&B
Aya Matsuura - Pop and Jazz
Tomiko Van - Rock and Jazz
Mika Nakashima - Rock and Pop
Of course opinion is like bellybutton, everyone has, and everyone has different one!
However: although I like these other voices, I will prefer to see live concert Otsuka above all these, she is most creative performer and composer, also she is so creative many other ways! So even she is not my favorite voice, perhaps she is my favorite performer anyway... |

Uhm, it's not the subject of this topic, but I don't think Utada Hikaru makes R&B-Music. she makes pop, and nothing other xD. but that's your opinion, i can't rule about that. I just wanted to show you my opinion about that. but the important thing is that you like her ! |

Ooh good question Crystallas.
I think I'm somewhat like Jester in that my favorite artists do shuffle around and no one really remains at the top all the time. It depends what they come out with and what I feel like listening to at the time.
Though Ai is definitely one of my faves as may someday be my all time favorite. To me, in order for me to intially enjoy their music I just look at three things. Their vocals, their lyrics and the unique-ness of their style. Ai fits into all three of those and goes beyond that. Her penning her own lyrics and playing the piano definitely adds to her as an artist and only makes me respect and admire her more.
I think what really sold me on her being one of my favorites was watching her lives especially her concerts. First of all there's the whole Love Is Born. Honestly, it's practically un-heard of that an artist will throw a concert on their birthday so they can share that day with their fans. I was really shocked when I found out she did that. But the first one I watched i believe someone actually did that.
And I have a profound respect for her at how respectful she is to everyone in her crew during the concert, always making sure the band, musicians and dancers get credit too. She makes sure everyone including the audience gets involved in her concerts. And it looks like her and her band get along extremely well (based on the concerts and the behind the scenes. I wouldn't be surprised if they practically treat each other as an extended family since they get along so well.
Furthermost her concerts are just plain fun to watch. There hasn't been a concert that has disappointed me yet. Granted with the Love Is Born 5th anniversary, I think it's excessive to have so many different concert dates, taking away the special-ness of the event (I would have been more content if she kept it as once a year type of thing) though I believe that was more of AVEX's decision that hers ... not entirely sure though.
I'd definitely love to see her live one day. |

Otsuka Ai isn't my number one favourite singer *ducks for cover* but I thought that her earlier works were a lot better. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed with her latest works ever since CHU-LIP (save HEART and some new tracks on LOVE PiECE) which is kinda why I've been edging away from Ai a bit these days.
When I first came across Ai's music, I was quite the hardcore fan and would listen to her music on repeat for ages but I haven't found myself able to do that with her new songs. Maybe I'm just getting a little bored with her style...like, I felt sure that I would stay in love with Kurage, Nagareboshi long after the first week of listening but I'm not all too excited every time I hear it now...
As for her concerts...while they are sometimes fun to watch...the way she uses her voice often irritates me so I've given up on watching/listening to a lot of her lives. There are just a few exceptions that I enjoy. Geez, I don't really sound like much of an Ai fan, do I
@Crystallas: Utada used to sing R&B  |

Come to think of it I feel the same way. Love piece album is not as exciting as its predecessors were. Perhaps partly to blame because the some of the songs come from the earlier released singles. I also gave up watching the love piece tour dvd not even halfway when the first time I got it form the mail. I watched it bit by bit.
Fortunately I love kurage nagareboshi so much that I keep playing it on my comp when I'm working on my assignments. hahaha Ai still remains on my A-list. |

Initially it was due to the cuteness factor of my first impression of her on TV, but I soon discover that this girl called Otsuka Ai is more than what I think. It was when I was flipping through the pages of LOVE PUNCH's lyrics book, I realised all the songs in the album was actually composed by herself and she also played the piano for all of them. Such talent, on top of the cuteness factor, I decided to go on further.
The way she expresses herself through her songs, her funny and ecstatic yet affectionate character, the kind of close-to-heart feeling you get whenever you see her concerts, and not forgetting she writes her own songs and plays the piano, these are probably the reasons why ai-chin is my favourite singer.

Im sure the reason you guys feel that way is due how ai-chin's songs has matured and changed throughout the years. If you look back and start listening to the tracks in chronological order, naturally you will realise that with each passing year, ai-chin has "grown up". Not only music wise, but in appearance and dressing too.
The then mischievous 21 years old Otsuka Ai is definitely different from what we see of her today. From the vibrance of sakuranbo and craziness of pon pon to ballads like planetarium and renai shashin, to songs like HEART and Pocket, and the latest single, kurage, nagareboshi, though she does attempt to continue bringing out the hype, you can feel the distinct difference between the new songs and the ones she wrote during her early days, be it sentimental or pop. |

Don't get me wrong I love her. Also lately her hair style a bit strange, but after looking again and again it's nothing weird anymore. I like long hair better....people who like her short hair...don't shoot me down lol.
Funny you mentioned mature..This reminds me of Avril L, makeover from tomboy-ish to feminine-style. Hahaha. She looked more innocent at her earlier career.

@mon: Well, Kurage, Nagareboshi was was written four years ago ie around the LOVE JAM era. That already kinda takes that song out of your equation. Plus, it is extremely similar to Kingyo Hanabi and Planetarium. I agree that her music has been changing as of late but the difference you were referring to is not all that clear. I felt that HEART stood out when it first came out (and I still enjoy it everytime I hear it) but to me, Pocket = Renai Shashin and Kurage, Nagareboshi = Kingyo Hanabi/Planetarium.
Maybe for me, it's cause it's too similar that I'm getting a bit bored. |

I know what some of youmean about her style changing. I had actually become pretty disappointed in the change a while ago..The sound of her newer songs was lacking that character and uniqueness that I had loved about Ai so much..it was almost as if she was putting songs out just cus she had to, not wanted to.
But over time, I've come to enjoy a number of her recent songs. Especially after hearing them live. Ai has a way of making her voice pierce your heart when she sings...
She really is unique. Especially being a celebrity. She seems to be one of the most loving, genuine people in the music industry. As far as I can tell. And she doesn't..change. You can see her character in everything she does. Her music is truely an expression of herself..and that shows and thats one thing I love about her. You can see her heart through her music..and especially concerts.
I remember the first time I had watched one of her concerts..it was online somewhere, I found The Love Cook DVD..like 2 in the morning..I was expecting to just watch some and go to bed haha. But that didn't happen. I was so like, intranced in it. It was seriously the best concert I'd ever seen. The emotion shown in everything, how all the songs played out. I was enjoying it so much it felt like I was there, sitting in the stadium or w.e listening to her. And watching how happy and energetic she was. That's when I fell in love with Ai >_>
In a non-romantic kind of way of course.
I seriously love her concerts. One day I'm gonna go to one of them..
Ai is definitely my favorite singer. My favorite..celebrity for that matter....my favorite..person that I don't know |

| For me, at first I enjoyed listening to Ai for her cute and unique style, with early songs such as Sakuranbo and SMILY. However, as I listened more and more to her piano ballads I found them to be really inspirational. Songs such as, 'Always Together', 'Planetarium' and 'Amaenbo' always get me inspired and emotional. Well, I love all her songs and I'll always be supporting her. For me, most importantly, she was one of the first JPop artists which I had strongly followed. |
