my name is Calis and i am from scotland in north-west europe. I enjoy many types of music from classical and opera right through to techno and rock. big fan of anime, books and games also, inc; Bleach, Death Note, Final Fantasy, Tolkien, Star Wars and Neverwinter Knights.

has been ages since i joined a new discussion forum - so here i find myself back in a newbie topic! i am not a newb tho - actually i like to describe myself as ancient and learned! I am an Historian and am currently studying for a Masters in Archaelogy at University.

I first heard ai otsuka about a month or so ago - her music is excellent and her vocal talent amazing, i look forward to discussing the wonder of Ai with all here.

Hi!

Welcome to Channel-Ai! Hope you enjoy yourself here. Ai's fantastic, and I've heard people like the latest album LOVE LETTER, but I'm holding out until the release date. You're studying Archaeology? Wow, that's really cool. I wanted to be one when I was little, and I'm still keeping it as a career option. But I've got plenty of time to think about that so...Tolkien for the win ^_^ Oh, and may I ask where the name 'Calis' comes from? As in, where did you get it? Anyway, see ya around! Smile

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

as is said it has been a while since i joined a discussion forum - don't get the time these days due to work and university. I used to participate mainly in literature forums - i think this might be the first music-related one i have joined. however when i first heard ai's music it just knocked me out so i had to join in!

i'm glad my user name has went down well! Calis is a character from a series of novel by the author Raymond E Feist, first introduced in the Krondor's Sons series and becoming a main character in The SerpentWar Saga.

octocoffee asked so nicely i just had to give all that info!

a few people interested in archaelogy also - great maybe well get round to discussing on here - see you all around.

hi Calis. i have been thinking about your description of where you are. i guess it is a sign of the times that you identify yourself more as a european than a briton. although, now i think on it, i find it hard to imagine someone from England saying: "i come from England. you know, that place just south of Scotland..." Smile

i also thought that it may be a bit superfluous to include the europe reference but then while randomly browsing i came across this map:

so i guess it doesnt hurt to be specific. clearly, geography is not some peoples strong suit! Laughing

there is something you can clear up for me. is Scotland a country? i was having a debate on this point with a friend recently. my position is it is not. i always thought it is part of a country called "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". so a country cannot be part of another country.
my friend tells me Scotland has its own independent parliament and competes in the commonwealth games as its own entity, which indicate otherwise.

did not think i would be having a debate about geo-political identification so early in this forum, however pon pon makes a good point.

i consider myself to be scottish, british and european. and as i see you are australian pon pon i also say that i consider myself a citizen of the commonwealth also. i don't fell any conflict in any of these roles, i see them as ties of kinship which help bring peoples together.

i declared myself a european in this forum as it is a world-wide discussion place, to you pon pon, i will declare myself as your brother citizen of the commonwealth, and as such, i am as proud of the australian cricket team as much as my own scottish football team.

Scotland is in fact a country in it's own right, we have seperate scottish laws and law courts for instance. Since devolution we have also had our own Parliament system. Which i voted against actually, I believe the world should gradually be coming together generation by generation, not splitting up again into smaller and smaller parts.

The Act of Union signed between the countries of the United Kingdom is still unique in the world. It is not totally consistant though, as you mentioned in the Olympics, GB operates as one team, in football and commonwealth games we split up into the four countries again.

thanks for all the points you made, Calis.

having read your response, it has got me more intrigued on the subject. so i have now wasted the last half hour trawling the web. if you google
Code:
"is scotland a country?"
you get a lot of information (mostly ill-informed opinion, imo) but it led me to two official websites:
which both confirm and contradict my previous thoughts at the same time. so much for my notion that a country cannot be a subset of another country. (this still seems like a contradiction to me, though, so must rely on the meaning of "country" not being "independent sovereign state")

yes, the United Kingdom is unique. maybe because it has historically been in the "country-defining business" for so long it feels entitled to makes up its own rules for itself!

Scotland and Australia also share the same monarch, so we are both subjects of the same queen, and our money has the same "heads".

your remark about "ties of kinship which help bring peoples together" reminds me of an interview i read with some science fiction writer. he said the greatest unifying force for mankind is if the earth was attacked by aliens. then all our petty differences would be forgotten in an instant and we would all work together. its a pity we cant all just be this way without the invasion.

respect to ponpon!

you really don't let go on an issue do you? worrying this one like a dog at a bone - you remind me of me!

you are correct in that it is contradictory that scotland is recognised as a country and not a sovereign state. as a scot though i am happy with that as we citizens of scotland, england and wales have delegated our nations sovereignty upward to the united kingdom, i think this serves the greater good for all citizens of the UK.

as i said I was against scotland getting our own parliament. I think all our political thought and energy for the future should be about improving the partnership model this country has developed and encouraging it's spread throughout europe and the world. other nations and peoples would all have there own ideas on how to change it of course - but it's general principles to me seem sound.

yes the UK has been in country defining business for a while, got kinda good at it at one point too, before it all went wrong. that australia turned out a great success.

lol, you may be right again ponpon, think i took it from star wars, star trek or somethin. whenever i say anythin which might give the impression i am wise or thoughful, these probably the sources.

not listening to ai at the moment for the first time in ages, my flatmate just set up some new speakers in main room and we are blasting some Northern Soul. dig some out ponpon, must be some on youtube...hold on, yes there is.

Justine 'Baby' Washington - Leave Me Alone

Timi Yuro - It'll Never Be Over

two of the greatest ever female vocalists.
