^ strangely enough there doesn't seem to be any J-drama recommendation thread on this forum...
anyway, after watching over 600 J-drama eps, here's my 2 cents of recommendations (other than the ones you've already seen):
Comedies (with romance): My Boss My Hero, Nodame Cantabile, Hanazakari no Kimitachi he, Hotaru no Hikari, Densha Otoko, Seigi no Mikata
Others: Orange Days, Byakuyakou, 14sai no Haha, Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu, Galileo, Code Blue, Ashita no Kita Yoshio |

My current recommendation based on 2009 drama:
Love Shuffle - interesting plot, good cast
Godhand Teru - similar to Iryu, but with a different personality
Shiroi Haru - Abe Hiroshi's acting is actually funny...he may look pissed off 90% of the time, but it's more of a retarded way of funny lol (I recommend you to watch Kekkon Dekinai Otoko before this)
Konkatsu! - the ratings may be low due to some certain events that happened a couple months ago with SMAP...*COUGH*DRUNKNUDE*COUGH*...but it carries an interesting plot, cast is quite unexpected, and Ueto Aya is there too =D
Meitantei no Okite - it may be a detective series...but its stupid humor, the plot is structured so that these mysteries cannot be solved by viewers (us)
Smile - It's still sorta...confusing, with the whole jumping to the future and the present, you don't really know what exactly happened...plot is interesting enough to watch
Chance! - 3 episodes was quite short for this drama....I actually like to watch further.....*drools while thinking about Meisa Kuroki........*
What not to watch for 2009:
Kami no Shizuku - honestly...i lost interest after 3 episodes, it got absolutely pointless that this is gonna span for 9-10 episodes with a different twist of wine tasting for the heir money...boring...
Atashinchi no Danshi - basically it's like a Hana Kimi...in a compact version...seriously...why do they always make Horikita Maki so boringggg....
2008 recommendation:
Giragira
Bloody Monday
Taiyo to Umi no Kyoshitsu
Shibatora
Seigi no Mikata
Code Blue
Lotto 6 de San-oku Ni-senman En Ateta Otoko
Edison no Haha
Mirai Koshi Meguru
2007 recommendation:
Hataraki Man
Mop Girl
Hotaru no Hikari
Yama Onna Kabe Onna
Papa to Musume no Nanokakan
Hanayome to Papa
Bambino!
of course...there's more i could list...but just watch all those first...LOL |

My three all time favorites j-dramas right now are
- Orange Days (i think a lot of people whom have gone through the post secondary school system or having to contemplate a career change can relate to this drama. I personally really liked the story. The female and male lead have amazing chemistry with one another, so much so they dated in real life for a number of years after having worked on this drama together).
- Nodame Cantabile (It's rare that a Live Action surpasses the anime, but in this case it did and some may like it even more than the manga. It's the best manga adaptation I've seen to date IMO ... the cast and director has executed the story well and I CANNOT wait for the movie)
- Love Shuffle (I like it because of the script writing, and all the puns they managed to throw in. Majority of the cast executed the story well)
Other drama I would recommend but don't jump up and down recommending because of people's different taste ...
- Taiyo no Uta
- Attention Please! (if you end up liking the series, the two Specials are worth watching)
- Unfair (though I don't really recommend the movie but that's just me, the Special is worth watching)
- Ryusei no Kizuna
- Trick (it's really dated, so I don't know if you'd like it but found it entertaining)
- Sunadokei (it's so long due to the story but I liked the acting. Sadly I can't find subs for this so I had to watch this all in Japanese .... I ended up learning a lot of Japanese though XD)
Taiwan dramas
.... Taiwanese dramas tend to be filly heavily with romance and idols though things may be changing
- I personally liked "Devil Beside You" and "Why Why Love", despite the fact that they are idol dramas there's some cute scenes. Both stories are kind of based on the same formula though so there's a LOT of similarities between the two
- "Fated to Love You" and "Prince Turned Into Frog" were entertaining
- "Black & White" I'm still watching this series but it's the best Taiwan series I've seen to date story wise. Though it is a cop drama but I like the fight scenes. They have a pretty decent action choreographer. I think he's still a bit of a novice but his dad is quite legendary in Hong Kong and China as he trained with Jackie Chan under the same SiFu. The story is really complex (compare to past Taiwan dramas) though I'm undecided at the moment about the acting. There is one of the bad guys whom I think has stepped his acting compare to his previous roles (which I'm delighted about) and the other male lead, considering this is his first major role, he's holding his own amongst the scattered veterans in the drama ...granted there's a ton of room for improvement still. I'd definitely recommend watching the first four episodes to get a few of this series. |

Trick may be dated, but it's worth watching, I've also seen Trick 2, Hiroshi Abe is so, so good in everything he does, also recommended if you like Yukie.
Korean dramas are also worth watching, they tend to be longer, about 16-20 episodes and from 60-70 minutes an episode. My 2 faves are I'm Sorry I Love You and Sassy Girl Chun Hyung. Just got Spy Girl, drama/comedy, so far first 2 episodes are good. |
