anybody know how, perhaps?

does she really write/compose ALL her songs, the music & lyrics ??
and without any helps or co-writer ?

and then for all her mellow and beautiful songs like Daisuki da yo, Renai Shashin, Pocket,
was she the one that comes up with the arrangements, like the sweet strings arrangements?
and in Renai Shashin, we can hear some pizzicato strings plucking, etc

I mean,..the arrangement itself is what makes me got into Ai a lot!
it's just...beautiful.
and even uniquely "Ai's style"! it's like you can't find these kind of arrangements in any other artist!
So i'm just wondering, if she's the one with all the ideas, or usually she is helped with a lot of people in her Teams ?
Smile

^ she often works with a co-composer, Ikoman. I know he worked with Ai for every song on LOVE PUNCH and LOVE JAM, but I'm not sure about LETTER. but yeah, Ai does have a hand in composing all her songs. Smile

^ I heard that he worked with her on every album, but I don't really know Confused ...

But basicly you can say, that she write all her songs herself (exception: LOVER SOUL, cause it's a cover and use the lyrics of Judy & Mary).

Ikoman always work with her on composing her songs.
She does the arrangements for piano for most of her songs but the other instruments aren't arranged by her.
Most of the instruments are arranged by Ikoman

YOKAN usually makes the brass arrangements

The strings arrangements for some songs are made by Mio Okamura Strings (the string that performs at her concerts) and Gen Ittetsu Strings

(Mio Okamura did strings arrangements for LOVE MUSiC, Ai, Ame no Tsubu Warutsu, Renai Shashin -haru-, tears, etc)

You can see some info about Ai's songs arrangements and performers here:

(just click on the link of a single/album to see the info about the songs)

Ikoman does not have any writing/composing credits on any of her songs. arranging is not the same as composing.

yeah, i always thought Ikoman and Ai work together when arranging music. I don't think he composes with Ai.

^ right, pon pon,

I have never seen that the name of the composer of any songs used the full name Otsuka Ai but always Ai. Of course, one may say that Ai is the alternative name of Ai-Chin, just like some novel authors never use their own names. From the beginning, all information about this I read also stated that Ai is equal to Otsuka Ai, but there is no official statement or interview (I always hope some) confirmed this suggestion.

Do you feel strange that every time when we were watching her performance, just before she sang, the subtitles went with

Singer: Otsuka Ai
Composer, Lyricist: Ai
Arrangers: Ai x Ikoman

Composer has never been displayed as Otsuka Ai

I really want to know why. I have been thinking that Ai may actually be a small group of people, where the leader is Ai-Chin, most songs or the main themes of some songs were composed by Ai-Chin, there are other members helping her to fill up the gaps or modify with a better rhythm and melody. If you listened to both versions of Sakuranbo, the one in 2nd single and the other one from her previous band HimaraRi, there are just three notes' differences between 2 versions in the phrase "Aishiau futari itsu no toki mo", these made the feeling of melody completely different, more attractive and modern. HimaraRi's version is very awkward and filled with old Japanese feeling.

Modification of some notes is just one technique, making the rhythm off-beat is another technique which helps the songs nicer to be listened to. I have taken a lot of time looking into the rhythm of PEACH and Bye-Bye, they are very very complex, so many off-beat rhythms. Though I got piano Grade 8 15 years ago (then stopped, and forgot all theory), I couldn't use any professional language to describe how a subtle change in rhythm makes the song nicer. Frankly, I have listened to Bye-Bye more than 500 times, still feel it very refreshing, why, it is because of the complex rhythm.

I believe there should be a group of professional musicians who are backing up her and modifying some songs according to the audience's willingness / preference and the trend of modern music. However, I still believe that Ai-Chin has her talent on composing utmost portion of all songs. Nonetheless, if there is no Ai-Chin's own unique style in composing songs, we are not discussing in this forum. All these are simply conjectures, don't take it too serious if you don't agree, hey man.

Of course, she is also a very good arranger on the piano part. You may see from so many her performance with piano solo acoustic, e.g. the first few piano solos in LOVE IS BORN 5th she was playing ad-lib, the arrangement was not very well organized but still very enchanting, however, the arrangements were very different from that in original albums / singles.

it may be just a style thing. after i read your post, i was curious enough to look at all the credits on her albums. here they are, in order from LOVE PUNCH to LOVE LETTER:

she did not produce LOVE PUNCH but i am sure she produced LOVE LETTER, even though i did not find the "produced by" credit in my quick look.

in interviews when she talks about when she wrote songs, she has never mentioned any collaboration. it would be "I wrote this song..."

she also has the pen-name of AiO.

I'm very free and so I done a long and slow look... Giggle Turn to the last page of LOVE LETTER lyrics book, "produced by Ai Otsuka" is stated there.

sorry, image very blur coz there's malfunction with my scanner while iphone camera very terrible. Blank stare

---
And for the name "Ai" in every credit, IMO, it's definitely refer to "Ai otsuka" since there's lesser proof to says its belong to a professional music group or whatever.

Guys remember Ai-chan's signature?
Here, as shows at Utaban 2004. 08. 19?

*She said that is her signature*(so cute Love )

It's simple an "Ai" instead of "Ai otsuka". I bet her own signature will only stand for herself but not her any team or music group~ Therefore, "Ai" = "Ai otsuka"~
