The subject describes the whole topic very well. Post a Top 10 of your favorite asian artists (both J-Pop and J-Rock Tongue ). Please add a description for each position of a artist.
Happy posting Boogie . I will start:

1 ~ Ai Otsuka
Ai-chan's music is the world for me. Her songs, her voice, her lyrics, her character. I never saw a musican with such a charisma! I don't want to put a finer point on it now because every single member here knows how wonderful Ai and her music is Love

2 ~ alan
alan amazes me! Her voice is like the best voice I've ever heard and her songs are just simply beautiful. Okay, she sings almost always ballads but as you can see her faster songs like "BRAVE" are incredible too. Her lyrics are very deep and sometimes a bit confusing too ("Try to find the ear", wtf Laughing ) but they have a meaning after all. I'm so happy for her good chart positions in the last time and I wish her well in the future Smile !

3 ~ Koda Kumi
Yeah, Kumi... Her music is party-ish, danceable and wild. Either you love her or you hate her, I belong to the Kumi Lover-side Giggle . Her music isn't that profound but at least she tries to be a good singer - and she is! I'm not a big fan of her ballads ("Ai no Uta" is quite nice Love ), so I hope she sings more songs like "Driving" and "Ecstasy" in the future. And she is so damn sexy Meow ...

4 ~ Stereopony
Newcommer band! Stereopony is my favorite rock band because they are female (I like female voices above male voices Nod ) and their songs are addictive Laughing . I hope they get a bit more known and successful in the future because they are really talented and deserve every penny! Even if you don't like rockish music, try to listen to some of SP's music Nod .

5 ~ Ayumi Hamasaki
Ayu thee J-Pop Goddess Laughing . Her lyrics are amazing and her music is always well done. Don't know what to say about her, everyone knows her xD.

6 ~ Shoko Nakagawa
Shoko is a Singer, Model, Idol and voice actor. A alround-talent with cute and addictive songs, I really appreciate her and her music. Furthermore her lyrics are really cute Giggle . If you don't know her, try some of her music out, she is really good!

7 ~ Rurutia
A unknown singer who has bad positions at Oricon (because nobody knows her >_>) and one of my favorite singers Smile . She has a feathery sort of voice and her complete music seems to be out of a big fantasy world. She writes beautiful and mysterious lyrics and has amazing instrumentals. If you like alan's music and the music from Final Fantasy, you'll probably like her. Her "Chorion" Album is good!

8 ~ misono
Koda Kumi's little underrated sister. Everyone is so mean to her, I can't understand Sad . Sure, there are better singers out there but misono gives her best and has good single and album-tracks. She is the complete opposite of her sister because she sings to pop/rock and rock music. At least she has a good live voice and don't need to sing playback like other bands/singers Shifty ...

9 ~ Namie Amuro
Queen of Hip Pop! Same as Kumi's music, she makes good music and is very hot. Don't know what to say about her, you probably heard of her Smile .

10 ~ Ikimonogakari
Iki! I used to love their stuff from the "Sakura Saku Machi Monogataru"-Era a lot but they got weaker and weaker with every single and album. Please Iki, get back to your old style or I kick you out of my Top 10 Blank stare .

Sorry about poking at the technicalities but you said Asian artists but you also specified J-pop/J-rock. I just want to make sure, are we sticking to J-pop/J-rock only or are can we include Chinese, Korean, Twaiwan or any other Asian artists/bands/groups? Because if we were to included those my list would be very very different compared to if it's strictly Japanese ... (haha sorry ... I just wanted to clarify).

On another note, nice list you have, I like a lot of those artists too. The only artist I haven't listened to is Shoko Nakagawa.

I was going to ask the same question too, almost a nice list, that hitomi omission was, uh... Sad I''ll also do one, could take a while to make it as good as yours, what's funny after Ai and Ayu, all our others will be different, Confused will be interested in seeing other people's list.

^ hitomi is not the only singer I left out. There are so many other bands I like, for example Ami Suzuki, Aqua Timez, Ayaka Hirahara, Bonnie Pink, hitomi, Mika Nakashima, Miliyah Kato, Perfume, Rie Fu, Shion Tsuji, Stephanie, Younha, YUI or Yuna Ito. I mean, I love them, but not as much as the singers in the Top 10, you know Giggle

But I decided to make a Top 5 for C- and K-Music Giggle :

Chinese
1 ~ By2
2 ~ Jolin Tsai
3 ~ Wang Lee Hom
4 ~ Vivian Hsu
5 ~ Nan Quan Mama

Korean
1 ~ Jewelry
2 ~ Epik High
3 ~ 2NE1
4 ~ Younha
5 ~ Girls Generation

cool thread. Smile well this isn't in any specific order, I just put the first few I can think of:

01. Ai Otsuka
self explanatory. Laughing I think we will all put the same thing for Ai-chin, so I'll just spare myself this part.

02. alan
alan is relatively new, but it's like she was lying in the wait, just idling her time for a good moment to be discovered. No one in the world can sing like her; her voice is too amazing for words. Give me Alan Dawa Dolma over some "trained opera singer" any day.

03. Ayumi Hamasaki
well of course, where else would the Empress of all J-Pop go but on a Top 10 list? Besides being like the reigning queen of the Japanese pop scene, Ayumi also writes lyrics that can make rocks cry and move mountains or something. She makes it seem so effortless.

04. misono
I agree with Crystallas, why are people so mean to misono? Kay, so she can't control her voice very well, but her voice is powerful and can be good if used right. Her lyrics and her music are all so very quirky and distinctly her. I feel her style is also nostalgic, like it comes right out of 90's rock.

05. Tomoko Kawase
Whether she's the lead singer of the brilliant green, the mysterious "heavenly6" or the dangerous "february6", Tommy just works. She exemplifies embracing life and everything about yourself, and being comfortable with who you are, which in the end is what everyone should do.

06. YUI
I haven't listened to a whole YUI album in a while but there always be a time when I go right back to her. Her lyrics are so personal and sweet, and her laid-back acoustic and soft rock style is just the thing to help me relax on a lazy day.

07. Stereopony
God, I love Stereopony! I only heard about them when they released "I do it" but damn, I love them already. Their cute teenage-rock style is just so carefree and adorable, while at the same time they put forth this serious image. I hope all the best for these girls.

08. Koda Kumi
People say Koda Kumi never change, but that isn't true. In recent years, she's toned down her sexy image, and has gone from "dirty sexy" to "classy sexy". Her upbeat dance rhythms are infectious, and her cute songs are so adorable. There's so many faces of Kumi, it's hard to keep track.

09. Ikimonogakari
Ah, Iki. Where have the days of "Sakura Saku Machi Monogatari" gone? Yoshiki's lyrics are so amazing, Kiyoe's voice is unforgettable, and Hotaka's instrumentation is uniquely Iki. They are a very distinct band, and you can tell what song they did for what.

10. GO!GO!7188
I haven't been listening to Gogo for a long time, but damn, I can't get enough of their songs. Their instrumentation is just so addictive and a special style of rock and I love how it's molded around the singer's voice. The singer has got a very unique voice, perfect for their songs.

Oh, these threads are fun! Unfortunately, I'm so over J-pop atm that I can't really think up many artists that I still really like...I'll try a top 5 instead.

1. Utada Hikaru

Come on! Musical genius! How come nobody else has her in their list??? T_T The fact that three of her albums are in the top 10 best selling albums of all time in Japan should say something!

2. Emi Hinouchi

Hardly anybody knows about her but I think she's just awesome. Most of her songs are really good and she has composed/written just about everything of hers, as well as for other artists that are as big as Amuro Namie even!

3. Ai Otsuka

She's gotta be in the list, but she's fallen down a little mainly because I'm not digging a lot of her new stuff. I loved her Love Jam and Love Cook albums as well as most of the singles on Love Piece.

4. M-Flo

Normally I'm not into this style but these guys are really fun to listen to and Verbal's rapping is awesome. Admittedly, I'm more of a fan of their 'M-flo loves' series but that's because I don't really like Lisa's voice. Meh.

5. Remioromen

1 Litre of Tears! They have some really really good songs and some really boring ones. Overall, my love for their strong singles is so large that I'd have to rate them as one of my favourite artists.

The rest...I could mention like BoA or DAI but I really can't be bothered because I haven't listened to their songs in a long time. Most other J-pop songs/singers, I'm only an occasional listener.

^ it's great to see you back sljinu =)

Ai Otsuka
- I <3 her for the enormous respect she has for her band members, staff and her own fans. I personally do not know any other artist/musician out there that throws a concert on their birthday to celebrate with their fans. I honestly cannot think of anyone. I have to admire the way she is sure to credit her band members during her concerts and making sure they each get a chance to shine in their own way. I love her unique, charming, charismatic personality. And I respect her for always trying to grow as an artist/musician by trying out/learning other musical instruments, trying out different styles of music, penning her own lyrics. I love how brave she is, showing her fans a new instrument she has learned to play. I feel shes quite genuine and love her for crying when she is touched or overwhelmed by emotions in a performance. And I absolutely love her for singing Planetarium in Mandarin and trying her best to learn some Mandarin for her Taiwan concert.

Maaya Sakamoto
- For me, shes one of the reasons I started to listen to Japanese music and continue to Japanese music. It was her early works that was my first taste of Japanese music (so shes a special artist to me) and they remain classics to this day. She not necessary mainstream but if youve ever watched anime on a regular basis, chances are shes sang the opening or ending song OR was one of the seiyuus in the series. I love both her speaking voice and singing voice. She may not necessarily the most powerful singer in the Japanese music industry but theres something about her soft gentle voice that just stands out from the crowd and touches your soul. I personally think that shes also a good singer because she can sing another language despite not being able to speak that language fluently. She has a number of English songs, and if you didnt know any better, you may have thought she was fluent in English but the reality is that she barely speaks English. I also like how shes evolved as an artist over time as well, as shes ventured into writing her own songs, doing a musical, working on her own or collaborating with other people (as oppose to relying on Yoko Kanno), trying out different styles of music and recently started singing at her own concerts (though shes been able to sing live perfectly well for radio appearances, promotional events, ect) She even has her own radio show.

David Tao
- I love his soulful voice, especially when hes singing in English. I had never heard of such a soulful voice from any male Asian artist (Yoga Lin is the only other male Asian artist that comes close IMO). He is one of the rare Asian artist that has that soul quality in his voice that are the same a lot of African/African American singer. Hes amazing live as he in studio. He composes and pens his own songs as well for other artists. And now hes venturing into directing his own music video(s). Even though he was in the United States for some time to study, I still think its fabulous how great he was able to pick up English so well. It shows when he sings such classics like Over the Rainbow still keeping the classic melody and lyrics to the song, but singing it in such a way that its got a modern R n B feel to it. Sometimes it takes him a while to release new material but thats okay because hes very consistent, sides I prefer quality over quantity.

alan
- Something about her voice stands out. Her ability to do wailing as it was the most natural thing, making it seem so easy when it is not. I love her work ethic (though sometimes I worry if shes getting enough rest). Her courage and drive to make it big in a country that not her native country. Her courage to learn, sing and speak in a language she didnt grow up speaking but finding different ways to keep her roots. I think its great that she plays the erhu and that interest in her music some times generated interest in this classical Chinese instrument. She definitely has a LOT of potential to be even better and its fascinating to see her popularity rise in a country that was once foreign to her and now her own native country. Im just plain excited to see how shell evolve as an artist.

Younha
- Shes so young and yet shes already done so much! She capable of singing very well in not one, not two but three languages! Shes definitely got a knack for picking up new languages, no doubt about that. And she can play the piano either classically or rock out on it, sometimes doing both one after the other. She has an abundance of potential as shes been writing her own songs; sing in multiple languages and composing some of her own song. Even though shes in a bit of a slump right now, I love her personality and her ability rock out on the piano and to sing with such emotion for someone her age.

The Brilliant Green
- Just a good all around rock/pop band. It is too bad that theyre disbanded now. Though if DAI got back together, I shall hope that theyll reunite again. Nonetheless, it was such a blessing to have them reunited temporary before they came out with their best of album for three songs. I cannot say why exactly theyre in my top ten but their songs hold a special place my heart as a dear friend recommended them to me and BuriGuri s music got me through some tough times in my life. I guess they are like my sentimental band or something along those lines.

Ayaka
- The moment I first heard Mikazuki, I was captivated by her voice. Vocally she is mesmerizing, shell be missed during her hiatus (IMO) but I hope it will not turn into a permanent retirement as itll be a huge loss for the Japanese music industry. Shes just a fantastic live singer whom is capable of singing various styles of music but somehow (even if shes doing a cover) she is able to make the song hers. She comes across really chilled and laid back and I love how her music is strictly about her music and not her image.

BONNIE PINK
- Something about her music stands out. To this day Im still not sure what it is but its unique and I like that shes not mainstream. Maybe its the combination of the unique lyrics and the music I could listen to some of her songs over and over again and not get sick of it. Though I honestly am not a huge fan of her some of her early works, I love everything from the Even So era and after. Shes been consistent with her releases and her live performances are enjoyable to watch.

Yoga Lin
- Although I think its about time he comes out with something new and I would love it if he started writing his own songs, hes in my top ten because I love his singing voice. Every time I hear certain songs, his singing just gives me goosebumps. Hes done some amazing covers of various songs from old Chinese songs to modern English songs and it shows how versatile his singing is. His debut album actually had a diverse set of songs. He just has so much potential, that itll be interesting to see what he comes out with next.

I'm leaving my 10th open for now since there's so many good artists/bands/groups that come to mind, so at the moment I can't decide who should be 10th for the time being.

^ I thought BuriGuri only got back together to finish off the Complete Singles Collection '97-'08l. Though now that you mention it they did an online interview where they said they're working on a new studio album w/c features previously un-released tracks. But this was quite some time ago and I haven't heard anything since.

I though Tomoko Kawase wanted to focus on her Tommy Heavenly6 material ...

This being post 500, thought I would try this thread, all of you are so articualte and interesting and have good choices, may have to more threads like this then. (Albums, songs, etc.) Nod

#1- hitomi- Was there any doubt, No she didn't start out being my fave, but slowly built her way up and has been there for the last 2 or so years. There are just too many reasons why she's my #1...great voice, dynamite songs, really down to earth, likes her fans and always puts on a great live show. Nod Also she looks great no matter how many times she's changed her looks, plus her songs are so varied, helps that she also writes her songs and what a wonderful acting job she did in Nightmare Detective...and wait til you see her new photobook! Embarassed
#2 and 3(tie)- This may shock some, it did me, Shocked but it makes sense, er, a little. Ai of course is there, we all know why, all the reasons I've heard I agree with. Another Hitomi, Yaida, has really zoomed up my rankings, she may one day over take hitomi#1 for the top ranking. Yaiko's sound, as someone said, takes a little getting used to, her voice is different, along with her music, it can go from very, very hard rock to ballads. Surprised She's also another who writes all her songs, plus she plays almost every instrument you hear on her albums. And of all the singers, she looks like she has more fun on the stage than anyone! Sakuranbo
#4-Goes to a band, Pizzicato Five. Hard to describe the songs they do Kingyo Hanabi ...Pop, dance, retro, swing, disco...name it! But every song is just so catchy and Nami the singer is one fashion plate, they were the first intro I really had to J-Pop, fairly easy to find their CDs over here, they broke up in 2001, sigh, J-Pop has never been the same. Sad
#5 Do as Infinity- At one point they were higher, that long layoff dropped them down 1 or 2 ranks. PWNED! Not much to say that hasn't been said, they just put out such enjoyable songs, whether it's a ballad or a rocker. Ban-chan is good singer, Ryo is an under-rated guitarist, live is where they are really good, really not much difference in my ranking of bands 4 and 5, though they are both vastly different! Wink
#6 Ayu- Was not sure where to put her, some days she's much higher, some day's lower. Blank stare All her songs are enjoyable, just thought that she got into a bit of a rut where too many songs were sounding the same, I really like the Rainbow- My Story era, maybe she set the standard too high for herself then. Confused

Little tougher now, trying to fit 20 bands into 4 slots. Crying
#7 Perfume- 6 months ago I would have said 'Who?', Blank stare but there is no one as entertaining now a days as them. Granted, quite a bit of credit goes to Nakata, but they are just so fun, cute, likeable Love ... has anyone in the world been more photographed then them in the last year. If you haven't heard them, it's a techno sound, but no song really sounds the same, the few rockish songs they've done sound better than their techno songs, a band that has a good chance of moving up. Nod

#8 Nanase Aikawa-- Perhaps ranked too high, but she was one of the first singers I really liked, between 1995-2001 she could do no wrong, she had the most fantastic singles during that time and har album cuts nay have been even better! Happy She played that tough girl image up, even though she's only 5 foot, about 90 pounds. And of all J-Poppers, she really has the best videos, watch a few if you get a chance. Nod

#9 misono/ DAT- A year or so ago they would not have made the list, but the ranking is going up, probably be higher next year. Shocked When I ordered DAT's single collection, I had never heard of any songs or even the group, just took a chance and it paid off, I'm in the minority, but I liked misono more with DAT than her solo stuff, but her solo stuff is great, I'm really curious to see what direction she's going to go in. Smile
#10 Everyone else- Thinking about it, there's not much difference between my 10th ranked and 20th, they change all the time. Smile So the following could be #10 on any given day- ELT, Speed, GG 7188, Bugy Craxone, Shonen Knife, Boa, Aya Ueto, Love Psychodelico, Shiina Ringo and a few others.

Whew, don't know about the rest of you, that wasn't as easy as it looks! Neko ni Fuusen
