I know it's random, but I saw a preformance of Pocket, and it looked like she had 4 or 5 earrings. (in one ear.)
It kind of shocked me, but it looked cool! I have a lot of earrings, too, so it felt good to know that maybe I wasn't alone. Laughing
But I was wondering if anybody knew the actual number of earrings she has?

I assume you're talking about the Music Station performance of Pocket? Laughing When I first watched that performance, I thought the exact same thing. In some pictures, she has two piercings on each ear if you look close enough, and others I've just seen one on each.

I hadn't thought about this in a while... Giggle

I'm fairly certain that Ai doesn't have her ears pierced at all.
I noticed her bare, 'hole-less' earlobes (odd of me, I guess Embarassed ) during the LOVE is BORN 3rd Anniversary performance when it came out and pulled a few screen caps. I wasn't really sure what to do with them, but here we are. Laughing

Of course if someone has a Blu-Ray of another earring-less performance they could post even sharper SCs.
Obviously she could have gotten them pierced between then and now (don't really have the time at the moment to hunt through more recent videos, unfortunately), but I doubt it. Considering how often she's seen wearing clip-on style earrings, it'd be odd if she did have pierced ears. Why wear clip-ons if you can wear regular earrings? I know I don't.
It's actually very common in Japan for a girl or woman to not have pierced ears (really only in the last ten years has ear-piercing become popular and accepted). Because of this, there is a wide selection of clip-on or alternative styles available.

Regarding the Pocket performance, I think the OP may be referring to the Music Japan one?
If you look carefully in the close-up shots, you can see by the bottom stem that the first earrings are in fact clip- or screw-on style.

Like these:

As for the other earrings, studs can easily be magnetic earrings and hoops can be held on by pressure via a spring-loaded backing or a clip).

Hope this helps. Love

*ETA:
I remembered you can see the clip-on stem of her earrings in the LOVE JAM Tour Pamphlet (even older example, but just thought I'd add it anyways):

Hmm, I never thought about Ai having piercings, either...I assumed she didn't have them pierced. I've never seen the screencap from that performance of Pocket, but wow, those earrings are pretty intense Shocked. It'd be cool if she really did have all of those earrings Tongue

coincidentally, i was watching some Amaenbo TV performances just before seeing this topic and thought to myself that Ai had no no earrings or piercings. since this discussion has centred around the Pocket performances, i looked at a few Pocket HD videos i had. this is what i saw:

2007.11.03, Music Fighter

2007.11.05, HEY!HEY!HEY!

2007.11.26, Best Hit

those are the broadcast dates. not necessarily the recording dates. i dont know anything about earrings, but i conclude that the last one indicates a piercing because the earring clasp is not in contact with enough surface area of the lobe to support the weight of the earring.

I see.
Thanks for answering!
I never really thought about it, too, until I saw the preformance.
So it just kind of came out of nowhere. Shocked
It makes a lot more sense that she wears clip-ons.

Take it from a girl who knows (and loves) earrings: those are indeed clip- or screw-ons (most likely the latter). Nod
Despite the diameter of the dangling earring, it is only made up of fine chain and tiny crystals -- it would not be heavy at all. This isn't much of an issue, though, as a good quality screw-on backing can support quite a bit of weight, relatively speaking. The tell-tale parts shown in the SC are the U-shaped stem going around the bottom of the lobe and the tiny half dome where the hole should be.

Since a clip/screw-on earring doesn't go *through* the lobe, it must go *around* it, hence the stem joining the front part (dome) to the back part (clip or screw). The tiny dome provides a bit of surface area to accept and distribute the pressure created from the back. A standard pieced earring doesn't have such a feature -- just the earring wire or hook.

While it's possible that they are dangly earrings with post-backings (below example), I repeat: if she had pierced ears, she would not regularly wear clip-on styles -- especially those large cubic zirconias in the HEY!HEY!HEY! and Music Japan performances.

Hi, pon pon! Long time no see! Love

of course, i defer to your expertise in this matter, zyzzyva. yes, now that i have examined the Best Hit video more closely i can see evidence of the U-shaped stem going around the bottom of the lobe you mention.

this topic shows me how needed you are around here, zyzzyva, Love to pull me back into line when i make pronouncements about things i am ignorant of! Embarassed Laughing

Well, pon pon, I owe *you* many a for your always quick research and technical skills (great eyes for hunting out those glimpses of ears for the screen caps, too). Love

Thanks for your kind words. (Don't be so hard on yourself. I don't think anyone expects guys to be aware of the minutiae of women's jewelry -- though it can be useful in the gift dept. and garner points for you. Giggle )
I hope I can start posting on a regular basis again. Recovery has been slow and rocky. No I've missed you guys and the forum.
Sad

This is an interesting topic. I have wondered about Ai's piercing too when I watched a few of her "Pocket" performances, especially the one on HEY!X3. She had like 3 or 4 earrings on one ear and and 2-3 on the other and it was rather interesting when I saw them and thought, wow, Ai has so many ear holes.

It is kind of weird how she has no ear holes though. Maybe it could be that she used to have them but her ear holes closed? A friend of mine has this situation where if she doesn't wear earrings for a period of time, her ear holes would close and then she'd have to get her ear pierced again. That's why she would wear earrings everyday to keep them open. I have my ears pierced for almost over 10 years now and I once didn't wear earrings for 2 years and my ear holes never closed.

Or maybe it could be that Ai doesn't want her ear lobes to stretch from wearing those dangling heavy earrings. I know this person from work who has really scary looking ear lobes because her ears were being pulled from wearing too many heavy earrings and her ear holes looked so torn and big that they look like they might rip off any minute! Shocked Or perhaps another reason is she might have illergic reactions to earrings that poke through her ears? Confused
