I've been thinking again, and that always gets me in trouble...

First, I have to ask. What's the difference between Ai-Chan and Ai-Chin? And how did those nicknames begin?

Second, is Ai really always exchanging harsh words with Koda Kumi? I read that somewhere...

I do appreciate everyone's thoughts in this topic, and I have decided to leave the term J-Pop alone... thanks so much for clearing that up for me. And I guess I'll never be able to figure out why some songs and artists are popular. Another one of those things I'll have to accept as a mystery, I guess...

I have to say for me, the vast majority of Ai-chin's songs I've fallen in love with immediately once I heard it. The rest that I haven't I've generally adored once I've seen it performed live. This is despite as Rodri mentioned Ai having such a large variety of music styles and elements integrated into her work, there is always some element ( the Ai-chin factor Laughing ) that just appeals to inner me Smile . There isn't any other artist who does that for me, most other artists, yes there are songs here and there that I love, but in general they don't repeatedly impress me with every song Tongue
So why are her sales dropping? That's pretty hard to say, sales are dropping for CDs across the board and I don't really know whether Ai's have dropped more or less than everyone elses. Her concerts though seem to be as popular as ever so I don't think there is too much to worry about. It doesn't really matter if she is not #1 in the land, popularity isn't necassarily the best indicator of quality ... and Ai-chin just always continues to produce the music I love Love
I would love to see her get another insert song into a drama again though, not an upbeat song like Peach, but one of her ballads Love that would be so great Love

"~chan" is just a common form of endearment for someone. It's usually used when talking to children, but is also used between close friends. Most female idols get dubbed ~chan. "~chin" I think is something Ai came up with herself and is used exclusively by her fans towards her Love

that is how i got to appreciate ai and her music, because i used to not get it, and thought she just sang cutesy chipmunk style annoying songs. people need to take time to know ai and appreciate her, and learn that she actually puts a large amount of effort into each and every song. ... but some people don't bother to learn about these things.

This case (people think that Aichin just sang cutesy chipmunk style annoying songs) may happen if their very first heard of Aichin songs is some of her “not really good” (I will not say the title) songs. But if their very first heard of Aichin’s songs is songs like 「プラネタリウム」・「ポケット」・「キミにカエル。」・「Cherish」 (yes, her ballads are very beautiful Love Love ), probably they will not think the same. Nod

Maybe having the J in front of J-pop just makes it easy for other people to distinguish which language it is in? It'd be fair to say that a lot of people who are foreign to Asia wouldn't be able to distinguish between Korean, Chinese, Japanese or any other Asian language.
just to clear this whole "J-pop" thing up, what sljinu says here is true, although not entirely. the term "J-pop" was coined some time in the '90s to distinguish the popular music in Japan from foreign music. however much easier it makes it for us foreigners to distinguish between J- and K- and C-pop, this wasn't created by foreigners for that cause, but by the Japanese media.
at first the term stood for (I quote) "all Japanese music belonging to the Recording Industry Association of Japan", but since more terms like J-punk, J-reggae, J-hip-hop, etc. started to be used, J-pop has leaned more to standing for Japanese pop, although it's still used kinda as a "root genre" from which all the other ones stem, kinda... in which case it does not refer to the pop genre. which annoys artists that don't play pop and don't want their music to be labeled "J-pop".
ok, 'nuff rambling, lol, just take a look at wikipedia.... J-pop.

yes, -chan is used mainly for children and girls, sometimes women. -chan is a cute way of saying -san, thus is used when talking to cute people. Tongue another suffix, -tan stems from -chan, meaning pretty much the same thing, i think.
-chin is more intimate than -chan, where -chan might be used for people you haven't met before (although you might want to do that with caution to not demean anyone who's too old to be called that Tongue), -chin is used more between people that know each other. and not that often then either.
i don't know who started calling Ai-chan Ai-chin, but generally it's used by her fans, i don't think i've ever heard someone call her that on tv shows or something like that.

Just to add, Ayumi is my favourite J-music artist but I love Ai too.
All I can say that in this present day, female artists in general don't seem to be popular any more, now it's the boy band that are enjoying success.

In my opinion both Ayu and Ai deserve better sales!

No one's mentioned Utada? I've always considered her to be the 'queen' of J-Pop

But anyways, I agree with what everyone's been saying as long as the artist's music makes you happy it doesn't matter where they place on the charts (to an extent, you obviously want them to chart enough so their label doesn't drop them).

That being said though, I do think Ai deserves better sales, I've been a little worried since her last couple of singles have had such lackluster sales. Hopefully LOVE is BEST will be a chart topper Love

As for the JPop thing, it's pretty clear that Japanese pop and regular pop have very distinct differences and I think it's fine if they label each differently to distinguish between the two. It doesn't mean one is lesser than the other, it just means that it's different. It's music from a different culture that has a different sound. It's just like specifying any other genre, imo.

that's a good point. boy bands like KAT-TUN, ARASHI, Hey!Say!JUMP and even the korean boyband that is gaining attention, Tohoshinki are really popular.

I dont see a problem with her songs, I'm still loving them, as well as her new songs, so I'm thinking maybe she needs better 'packaging', or outlook, like having nicer hairstyles. Sneeze

I don't think her look and her hair is "bad" or something like that. I mean, her hairstyle is very weird and strange from time to time, but it totally fits to her. Always the same hair looks so boring, look at other artists Wink . Ai-chan is totally unique!

If Ai-chan likes the style, I like the style too Nod . We shouldn't force her to wear other hairdo's just because we don't like it Shifty .

For female j-pop artistes, I really love Ayu, Utada and Otsuka Ai. All of them are very talented, and they produce their style of music which I really like ^^
