She new to the J-pop scene. Technically she just debuted this year when her first mini album got debuted in April. She's also very young, just graduated from High School this spring.
If you guys are interested I can upload the singles out so far and a rip of her upcoming A-side.
Here's a bio on her. It's basically an English translation of the things in her bio on her official websiteQuote: In January 2008, Sugawara Sayuri participated to "7DAYS Audition" and "30DAYS Audition". With her transparent voice, she won both auditions and got a contract with For Life Music Entertainment. On December 17, 2008, Sugawara released her first song digitally through Chaku-Uta, Destiny is sampled from Franz Liszt's classical masterpiece Liebesträume ([Ger]; Dream of Love) and featured rapper FEROS. In April 2009, Sugawara released her debut mini-album, Kimi ni Okuru Uta. In April 2009, she made her major debut with the mini-album, "Kimi ni Okuru Uta".
Following the digital success of her song, "Kimi ni Okuru Uta", Sugawari will release her debut single "Ano Hi no Yakusoku" on September 30, 2009. On September 3, 2009, at Final Fantasy XIII premier, it was announced that she will perform its theme song, "Kimi ga Iru Kara". The song is composed by Hamauzu Masashi and Sugawara also performed its orchestra version the premier. A single for "Kimi ga Iru Kara" is scheduled to be released on December 2, two weeks before the release date of Final Fantasy XIII.
I would say she's successful for a debut artist and getting the attention she has gotten for someone that just debuted this year. Square Enix must have seen a lot potential in her to have picked her to do two songs for FFXIII. The four other female singers they have picked for previous Final Fantasy games all had significant experience in the music industry, where as she's fairly new and inexperienced.
For anyone that does know how to read Japanese, this is the article when Square Enix announced that she would being doing the theme song and the insert song for FFXIII.

I'm still mad that Square Enix decided to have Leona Lewis sing a different song for the English release of FFXIII and it's totally a contract between them and Leona's management to promote her upcoming album. Not that I hate Leona Lewis or anything. But it's just not the same. On the other hand, I think I can see why they did that since Angela Aki and Faye Wong could sing in English so they kept them for the English releases. I guess it's like the whole controversy with FFX-2 when Jade sang in the English release and Koda Kumi's version wasn't used. |

| I listened to it as well. I was a bit dissapointed because I thought "Kimi ga iru kara" and "Eternal Love" were pretty boring, they are not as epic as the other songs from FF. I'm glad that the single goes well on the charts though, #9 isn't bad for her . |
