I love to read how much you care about Ai and her music. You are all truly her fans Perhaps you care even more about drops in that CD's sales than herself
What really matters is quality and not quantity. The real quality of Ai music lies in her attitude to it. She is honest in her expression, puts her heart and real feelings to her music, she often uses metaphorical language and picture to pass those feelings. This is real art, which is very rare nowadays. As long as she does it, I don't worry about her future career. Her fame will go far beyond Japan, you will see. I don't really know many artists so sincere in their expression. Ai is incredible and those who comprehend her message are really lucky ones.
Everything changes in this world, so Ai changes too. One cannot expect she will keep her old image just to keep the sales high. I do hope she never chooses a strictly commercial attitude to raise sales. If too much exploited by Avex Trax, I'd rather see her changing the label for more artistic freedom.
Greetings,

Yes to all the above and remember that Ai is only 27, she has so, so many years in front of her, just because her last few albums have not set any sales records is not the end of the world.

Whenever I see people discussing this, I feel like I've missed something important. Sure, Ai's CDs don't sell as much as they used to, but they still do pretty well. Love is Best has stayed within the top 10 for the most part, and it even peaked at no .1 at one point. I'd consider that a sucess, even if Ai has done better earlier.
There are probably many factors that contribute to the decline in Ai's sales. One major factor is that CD sales in general (all over the world, not just in Japan) are declining. I hate saying this, but CDs are starting to become out-dated. Casual fans will prefer buying cheaper mp3 version of just the songs they like, rather than cashing out for entire albums.
Another thing is that artists change as they get older, experiment with different styles and such. Ai has gone through a rather obvious change in image (while, in my opinion, still managing to retain her old charm), and that's going to drive away some fans that prefer her old image and music. On the flip-side, the new style can attract new fans, who didn't really care for Ai initially.
Also, seeing as Ai tours a lot, I think she earns a lot of money from ticket and merchendise sales as well.
In the end though, sales aren't that important. Artists with much lower sales than Ai continue making music for ages. Is is ~quality~ music, and no declining sales are going to change that. |

^^ Welcome, shouldn't your name be Alice? This thread turned out to be quite interesting, lot of good thoughts and comments, I'll always prefer both buying the CD and listening to every song, most of the songs with are not popular end up being the best. |

^Alice? Not as far as I know XD Thanks, though
But yeah, I vastly prefer owning the physical CD, rather than just files on a computer. Its something you can actually hold in your hands. And should you be so lucky as to meet the artist, they can sign your copy! You can't really sign mp3s. Oh, and I love listening to a new CD while flipping through the booklet, looking at the pictures and reading the lyrics Um yes. Enough about my love for CDs. |

^^That's quite okay, not enough of us have that love for CDs, have so little songs on my computer except for videos, never bought any MP3s, just finished playing Love Jam earlier, doubt if it was on my computer I could have listened to the whole thing. |
