I didn't see a thread on this, so I hope there isn't another exisiting one.
Anyways, so I was just wondering, what other people were thinking about her declining sales? What are your opinions?
And also, what are some causes or factors contributing to the sales decline?
let's discuss! |

I'm guessing the factor that make her sales decline is because she have changed. Most of her fans maybe don't really like with her change. Maybe they like the cute Aichin then the mature Aichin. |

Less tie ins. Used up, Japan is over her, Japan is over many avex artists like Hitomi Shimatani, Ami Suzuki, BoA. Lack of promotion.
All it takes for Ai to increase her sales is some very good tie ins with a damn good song, like Planetarium for HYD. |

| I agree with HilaryDuffFanboy, she needs more promotion and better tie-ins (into doramas). Sometimes I have the sense that avex don't really cares about Ai-chan. avex promoted the big stars like Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi or Namie Amuro, but they forget about the other artists. Ai-chan sold very good in the past, if avex promotes her good, she is able to become a succesfully artist again. |

I will pray for the career of Ai-chin. And I am hoping that her career will be wider than ever. But even she changed (going to mature image) ill support her! , I think it was her decision anyway.. But, if I have the opportunity to choose, I should prefer her old self..
(I am new here. Actually this is my first post, nice to meet you all. ) |

Every artist is losing sales though, it's not just Ai. Economy is so much worse then it ever has in Japan, fewer people can afford things such as CDs, dvds, etc. The temp job market is growing rapidly, not as much pay/benfits, companies over there are too stubborn to change and lower prices, I've read a few other comments around here about her sales dropping, though others have dropped more, better thread may have been why is everyone in the Japanese music industry sales dropping. |

I agree about the part where it was mentioned that Japan is over certain avex artists. -___-
And yeah, there are factors such as the enonomy going into a downward spiral, which is contributing to the lesser sales of J-pop CD's in general.
I hope her next studio album will at least sell within the 80k - 150k range, if not, then it will be sad to see.
I personally don't see her selling well again anytime soon, until she releases some sort of Ai complete ~all singles~ , or something like that. Hopefully, people are still interested in her whenever she releases some sort of BEST album containing songs spanning her entire music career.
On a sidenote: I thought Kurage Nagareboshi could have had better sales maybe if it had a J-drama tie-in, since the song is so epic. |

J-pop CDs in general, the sales are not going down.
Otsuka Ai's sales on the other hand, are going down.
Those are two different matters. As you can see in the ORICON chart, I can compare two best albums right off the bat. Using LOVE is BEST as the original example and ayaka's History 2006 - 2009 as the other album.
Ayaka's album was released on September 23, and has sold over 1 million copies.
Now we're gonna say "well, that's not fair, she has literally 2 months head start".
Well, has there been an Otsuka Ai album that was generally in Top 10 even though it has been 2 months? No.
Firstly, it depends on the content the company is releasing.
Secondly, it depends on what Ai-chan does with herself. We all know that she isn't the same as back in 2003.
Ai am Best debuted at #1 and sold 64,396 copies on first day, whereas LOVE is BEST is at 22,895. The first week for this album can't even beat the number for first day of the album released 2.5 years ago.
Now lets look at the content...Ai am Best is a real best album, LOVE is BEST...why do I still see Sakuranbo, Daisuki Dai Yo? LOVE is BEST is literally a joke. It's a half of best album and a quarter new, and a quarter recycled. Why bother releasing it then? Avex should might as well tell Otsuka Ai to go to Music Station and sing Sakuranbo instead of Is.
As well, her singles count has been ridiculously decreased.
2003 - 2 singles
2004 - 4 singles
2005 - 5 singles
2006 - 3 singles
2007 - 3 singles
2008 - 2 singles
2009 - 1 single THAT WAS RE-RELEASED FROM AN ALBUM.
What a bell curve....
Seriously, avex...if you want to rip money out of us...do it the common way by releasing singles. Not recycled albums, nor yearly dvds. Eventually, we will get sick of it.
And since Suzuki Ami actually has a role in a drama (Ohitorisama), I'm expecting Ai-chan to make her way back to dramas again. It's much better that way >.> |

Wow, I never put it in perspective like that so thank you 1337rice
With figures like that it's really not surprising why Ai's sales have dropped so much. I only hope that Avex will really promote her next single so she gets a little sales boost because at this rate it'll only be a matter of time before Ai gets dropped. |

CD sales alone do not define a successful/profitable artist.
Concerts
i read recently that in the UK, revenue from concert tickets has now exceeded CD sales. Ai's concert schedule is now very busy, and she is now releasing more concert DVDs than singles. if the singles releases are a bell curve, then the concert DVDs are exponential. i mentioned why i think this is so here.
Ringtones
ringtones are huge in Japan. GReeeen has achieved one million ringtone sales via mobile phone - the first to do so in the world, and i heard some of Ai's tunes are very popular too.
Goods/merchandise
it is impossible to quantify the value of "non-music" items, such as posters, tour goods, keyrings, photobooks, music scores, etc. but i am sure it is substantial. it may surprise some people to know that Ferrari make more money from their branded merchandise than they do from selling their cars.
Product endorsement (CMs)
again, impossible to know the value. all you could say is that the more an artist does the more lucrative it is. well, that must be a statement of the obvious! |

When you look at it, "LOVE is BEST" was just released to promote her tour. Rightly of wrongly, that seems to be the approach AVEX is taking with Ai. To try to make money of her tours.
Personally I think this is the wrong approach, I would like to see Ai regularly releasing new singles, appearing on Music Station and related shows, and promoting herself a bit more often. The figures 1337rice showed with the declining rate of singles is quite alarming, I sure hope next year will be different, but truthfully I don't know what to expect. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ai-chin did appear in a drama next year ... |

this is so true... Epic it is.
about the sales, i wouldn't care much.. to be honest, with the music that she's created, i any extra coming out from her is like a bonus to me. |

Not to be too boring , but some sales figures:
Ayu went from selling 1.9 million of Rainbow in 2002 to 378,000 of Next Level in 2009.
Kumi Koda has gone from 1 million for 2006's Black Cherry to 393,000 for Trick in 2009
Hikaru Utada has gone from 3.6 million for Deep Blue in 2008 to 1.1 m for Heart Station 2008
Ai went from 835,000 for Love Cook to 180,000 for Love Letter.
Only looked at studio albums, didn't realize that Ai has probably had the highest drop by %. May be a bit hard to read, but the Oricon site has all the sales figures and top 100 lists for the last 20 years. |
