I have been thinking that I should open the door to another artist (other than Ai-chan and Hikki-chan). As I have written before in Channel Ai, I have been hesitant to do so because I tend to go over board and spend way too much money on these things. This is the main reason that I have purposely not tried to learn more singers. At the same time, I feel as though I am missing out. So I have created a thread looking for advice and suggestions from all Channel-Ai members as you are very ell versed on the topic from what I read.

So I love Ai-chan and can't imagine anyone replacing her. I also really like Hikki-chan's music even though they are very different. So if I were to add another to my list, who would you recommend?

I made a poll based on the names that I have heard on this site the most as well as elsewhere. If you have another person please comment and accept my apology for ignorantly leaving her off the list Embarassed

よろしくお願いします!

I voted for YUI on the poll because she's one of my favorites...xD
I'm not sure what to reccomend because I'm not sure of your taste Laughing
Do you prefer some really catchy pop or something more rock-pop?

Maybe you can try Kanon Wakeshima too...but I don't know if you'll like her Laughing

Strange that it didn't register on the poll. I saw her new release at Kinokuniya today. Is that good?

I love Ai-chan, not for her voice, Hikki's is better IMO. I love her because I first saw her live. I saw her sincerity. I saw her emotion and her enjoyment of performing. I saw her as the anti-Diva. If one thinks about it, the range of her voice should be limited, but she does as much as one can do with it. Hikki's voice..no not voice, but singing ability is superior to 愛ちゃん's. This is my opinion.

Please do not get me wrong, I love 愛ちゃんs voice. However, I see her smile as she sings. I see her happiness to be on stage. I see her seemingly enjoying every moment of her performance. This is why I love her and her art.

I voted for Ayaka

If you like Hikki for her vocals and that she can seamlessly sing English and Japanese (some times switching between the two languages in a song) than I would look into artists like:
Ayaka, Yuna Ito, JYONGRI, mink, Kanon (not Kanon Wakeshima, she's a different Kanon) and BONNIE PINK (but I'm not sure if you would like her ... I'd recommend her "Even So" album)

Samples
Ayaka
- Mikazuki - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYsuGM0tqtw (this is the song that got me into Ayaka, and my very first Ayaka song)
- Winding Road (f/ Kobukuro) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCNFJq5Vzxc
(this one might be better sound quality because it is the PV - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mRbc0xUYkw )
- Human Nature (MTV unplugged) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdxgmOFtzUA
(she has a lot of good songs but I'd be listing too many things if I keep going)

Yuna Ito
- Precious - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgH296xpIAg
- Trust You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh2mE6K7y1g
- Miss You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVKn0szzIlw
(for her fast songs I'd recommend Losin' (but I can't find the PV on YT) and Love Machine Gun (that doesn't have a PV but it's on her third album) ... along again is also a good song

Jyongri
- Possession - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9k5a0_jyongri-possession_school
- Lullaby for You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7j6eFND_i0
- Sky Blue (f/ Sound Around) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RTgYlitL7c

(Side note -You either will like her or not. I think her and Yuna Ito are in the same boat ... sorta, Both great musically and amazing live but their talent and potential is wasted at times because they are horribly promoted. That and Yuna is some time given sub par songs to sing, she needs to write her own songs more. Where is Jyongri is stubborn about writing her own songs and doing her own compositions some people complain about her stuff sound the same. The Sound Around collab was brilliant, so I hope she'll work with other artists more. It's nice that she does her own stuff but I think that working with other people will allow her more experience, inspiration and expose her to more styles)

mink
- Innocent Blue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwaCwPj1iRk
- おまじない - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX58kHWuvJQ
- Eternal Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZUqm7599Cw
One Suitcase is also good but I don't recommend the one on YT because that's not mink, the song and voice is her but the video is something else XD

Kanon
http://www.channel-ai.com/blog/2007/02/13/kanon/
- if this entry doesn't sell you on how awesome she is, I don't know what will

BONNIE PINK
- A Perfect Sky - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28-y-aWBZVY
(there's a another mix that I like more but my brain is worn out right now)
- Last Kiss - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0esmdpyr94

- maybe I'll post more later XD

I think aiko, KOKIA, Lela are interesting too but KOKIA and Lela aren't exactly mainstream. aiko's music some what reminds me of Ai and some fans feel that way too but each has their own opinions.

i'm gonna go ahead and vote for ayaka too. it stood between her, YUI and alan. Uetty is sweet and whatnot, but her voice doesn't compete with those other three, especially not ayaka's and alan's.
hopefully ayaka will have a fast recover and that we'll see her back in business soon (as long as she wants it).
thanks a lot for the link to Human Nature, sakura, i gotta check out the MTV Unplugged DVD. Nod

Depends on your favorite genre and stuff. I voted for ayaka because her vocals are amazing and her songs are beautiful in a variety of ways. If you want a traditional influenced singer with amazing vocals and epic songs go for alan (Don't listen to her 2nd album though. It's awful, minus "Kuon no Kawa" and "BALLAD").

Haha yeah I voted for Aya ~ Smile Smile Smile ~ but I agree with mango, in terms of vocal talents she is definitely behind the others. Singing for her is more a part time / side project for alongside her acting and other numerous TV roles she fulfills. But if you want to go for someone with the sweetest, most bright, innocent, loveable and inspirational personality, Uetty's definitely the way to go. Hehe she's got the monkeys vote too, look at his face, he's in bliss Smile Smile

Thank you all for the thorough resonses. Especially Sakura Angel's. Very helpful and kind of you Smile Ayaka's looking pretty strong right now. Nod

The funny thing is that I had a dream last night that BoA and YUI were tied with 5 votes each. In fact, I didn't realize that it was a dream until now when I see the real results. Laughing

Thank you again to all of you that had suggestions and comments. Sakura Angel, your information and links were especially valuable!

After checking out the links, I have decided pursue ayaka's work. I agree that her voice is incredible and I love her songs that I have heard. Incidentally, I asked my Japanese wife, who is not the biggest J-Pop fan, but knows many names and appreciates the talented ones, who she thinks is the best.. Her answer... ayaka! Laughing

So it seems that she has only two albums but there is a best album called ayaka's History 2006-2009? It would seem that I should get that and maybe the MTV Unplugged DVD for now? Or perhaps also the First Message Live Tour? Any suggestions on my strategy?

Thanks again everyone! Channel Ai members are awesome! Love Nod

Thanks for the advice.

The two competing in my dream about this post. Laughing

I am thinking of picking up some of YUI's now, but I am firmly a fan of ayaka behind Ai-chan and ahead of Hikki-chan, but I think they're all great.

Many of us on this site have some level of skill in reading and writing Japanese. I personally can read things but need assistance from jisho.org on many kanji and their are others with greater skill around here.

Chihiro Onitsuka - Infection) (With english subtitles)
Chihiro Onitsuka - Hotaru (Just ignore the random-whispering at the beginning)

Rie fu - 5000 Miles
Rie fu - Life is like a boat

Thank you Crystallas. I'll listen to these when I get home. Pretty soon, I'll actually be able to say yes in the the "is it in your music collection thread" on occasion. Smile
