I was just watching the PV for LUCKY STAR, and it suddenly came to my mind, that Ai-chan's style has been getting wierder and weirder as she goes on in her carreer (in a good way, of course!).
I was thinking back to her Planetarium and Daisuki Da Yo days, and even though she had some crazy-sounding songs (like Pon Pon and whatnot), it seems like 2007's Chu-Lip marked her transition. When I first saw the PV for Chu-Lip a while ago, I thought it was really different and kind of surprising but also refreshing and cute. (Even in a different way from Smily!)
And since then, her PVs-at least the upbeat ones-are all like that. (With odd dances and strange characters [it looks like it'd be so fun to work with her and the dancers on PVs or at lives ].) Even her costumes lately for her concerts are more costume-like and less casual like in the Jam Punch tour or Love Cook tour.
I think that she's made a great switch in her music and image, because while she is getting to that age where she's writing more adult-like and not as many cutesy songs like Sakuranbo, she has adopted a mature, but more fitting cute-like image for herself.
She is one of the few artists who are able to do that well, I think.
I'm not saying any of this is bad, for anyone who thinks that's what I'm getting at!
What do you guys think? |

I agree, there has been a big change with the costumes and hair to a more wild and colorful style. I like it but I like the more natural look from the old days. It's like Tim Burton is picking her costumes. |

^If Tim Burton was picking her costumes she would dress awesome
I don't think she's getting weirder...since LOVE JAM she had weird and funny songs like ponpon...
She changed her dressing style to fit her more "mature" music (by mature I mean that her music is now more complex and artistic xD) But I don't think she changed her musical style..or that she's now becoming someone different as some people say. |

meh.. this question is quite moot to me... heheh..
for i think ai-chan has ALWAYS been weird. she'll do random stuffs almost at anytime...
i think if you don't know anything about her, (like me when i first started), it is quite shocking and head scratching that she can sing both a great ballad like Kurage, Nagareboshi and also Pon Pon...
she's too free-spirited to be stuck with any one "genre", "type" or "pigeon-hole"... |

I don't know if I would characterize any of this as "weird". I'd call it adorably quirky. |

True, it's like fun-in-a-cute-way-but-with-a-serious-face.
Like in her Chu-Lip and Lucky Star dance. |

Yeah, I agree with skeedatl I'd probably say she's just getting more quirky and developing her own unique style
However, I just hope Ai-chin doesn't get too out of hand and end up being quirky just to be quirky and stand out because I think that might really drive fans away |

| If she starts wearing masks everywhere like Lady Gaga I'll know she had gone off the deep end. She may have always had this interest in flash and whimsical fashion but wasn't in the position of her career to take those risks. Now with her success (and revenue) coming from many areas, commercial endorsements, merchandising, touring, past recordings, etc., she likely doesn't have to worry so much about what is commercially successful. She is at a point in her life and career where she can try anything she wants whether it's taking the turn with Love.IT or doing these colorful costumes. Point being if it didn't or doesn't work out commercially it doesn't decimate her career or earnings like it could have if she tried it in 2005 and it went terribly wrong. |

I don't see her doing that and I hate to even mention them together in the same sentence. As long as Ai-chin is doing what she wants to do and having fun, I will continue to support her with all my energy.
Incidentally, I agree with those that say she has always been different in a good way. He career evolution seems pretty natural to me. |

I don't think Ai will become like Lady GaGa. Yes, she sometimes wears costumes or weird clothes and haistyles, but I think that it's a sign of her creativity and passion in all what she is doing. That shows she likes to sing, having fun, and surprising her fans.
I watched Lucky Star PV again and I don't think that it is weird, just to sell better, or gain her popularity. The PV has got a message and shows some story.
I can stand when artist is acting a little weird or wears funny costumes, but I can't stand when she/he sings crappy songs, without a meaning, and only what he does is shock their audience. Another thing that I just HATE is when a singer is jumping half naked on the scene or shows really dirty scenes in PV's (often thing in popular American or European songs )
As long as Ai-chin will create good songs, and be so friendly and nice, like she was all the time, I will support her |

I couldn't agree more. I think Ai has always been able to come up with something fresh and new with every song she releases, and even when it's something I don't like instantly, I give her so much credit for not being boring. And I trust her. I mean maybe there's a song or PV that I don't like right away, but I'm always sure that if I take some time and give it a chance, I'll grow to like it a lot.
I wasn't crazy for the Lucky Star PV the first time I saw it, but it's such a good song that I kept playing it over and over to hear the music. Then I got to like what she was doing in the PV, too. |

That's exactly what happened to me too. |

| I do agree that her PV's and image and stuff is getting a bit different, and more strange. |
