I'm american. I catch crap every once in a while but it doesn't bother me. "What the hell are you listening to?!" is something I get a lot.
My favorite response are from people who seem interested because maybe they like a melody, piano, voice or a hook in a song I'm listening to, but still refuse to let themselves explore it more, because they don't want to invest time in something without understanding what is being said. . Their loss I think.
I can't understand most of the stuff I'm listening to but I've also picked up on a lot of words and phrases here and there. Translation sites also help a lot. Music (and subbed interviews, movies, etc) is a great way to get started in learning a different language, IMO. |

Hi, I'm American too. Don't let what others say get to you.
You should listen to what you like, who cares what others think. |

Yay! I'm American as well! My pic is in the members pic board I have one friend who when ever I'm listing to japanese music she groans and complains horribly, also once we were listin to my Ipod through my speakers and of course a japanese song came on and she said as long as I'm in her house there will be no Japanese crap music in her house So I sadly changed the song but manged to sneak a few intros in hehe , she also calls anime, anigay (anna-gay)! Which really hurts my feelings ! But I have my best friend Kerushii here who is obsessed as I am so ! |

Well... technically I'm American because I live in America. I think the people who live in america country (with citizenship) are considered american, but I know what you mean. But being "asian" and not japanese and listening to japanese music is just as much a pain! I'm glad people at my school can judge the difference from someone from japan and someone who is taiwanese or chinese. But I don't like it when people automatically judge me by how I look, and then when they find out I'm not Japanese they go like "jeez, you wannabe" or something when I never said anything in the beginning. Like there's this one stupid guy who sits next to me in History (and how horrible it is that now I sit next to him for math class, too) and once he called me the wannabe but he's the one who's being one at least not all my conversations start out with anime and how I have to show off my pronounciations, blabblah;; ok I'm off topic, lol, sorry.
But anyways, back to the real topic, I think people who are really american who like music from japan (and especially people who speak it fluently!) are very cool! Since I mean in like asian countries if you walk into a cd store they'll probably have posters and big sections on japanese music but in America you won't find that unless you go specifically into a bookstore/cd store specializing on music of japan. |

i am american. i am also chinese. well i have chinese blood but i'm born in america and have never left the country, so i think i count.
and i think americans who listen to japanese music are more willing to accept other cultures, particularly if you are not japanese. everyone is all..."why're you listening to music if you don't understand it?" well fine narrow-minded ones, think what you want. music comes in more forms than your puny brain could ever contemplate. |

I am American now, but not before and maybe not later. I was born Japan, Yamaguchi Prefecture, but I have lived exclusively in USA since age 13, because I was sent to here by my relatives after my parents left this world. I am citizen of USA now but anyway I still have sometimes feeling of lost. Two months ago I met two Japanese women tourists Emi and Hiromi on train going to Texas, they are both about my age, one year older, they are both graduate from college and both working in professional jobs and live at some cool place in Tokyo! although they are artist not engineer like me. Anyway when I was talking with them I was understanding my sometimes lost feeling. I never returned to Japan since junior high school age but if I did not come to USA I would become very much like these two new friends, yes? Also they look like me, yes?
But I have lived in USA so long! I have become American attitude for many things! I still believe Japanese way that responsibility to community is most important action for person, but I also like to personal expression thinking and individual rights too, this is also important for human life! I have become confused where I should be in this world. So I will to Japan in spring time, first time for 13 years! I will visit to my family in Yamaguchi-ken and also I will visit to my new friends Emi and Hiromi in Tokyo and I will learn what is my place for life.
Truth: I think I will not wish to live Japan, my attitude is too much individual and my destiny direction is not there. I had one boyfriend from Japan when I was in college, he expected me go back Japan with him when he became graduated, we broke up after two years because I can never become what is important for him. There is certain role for woman in Japan, I cannot be this role! even this is now changing but not fast enough for my life. |

I'm Mexican, and yeh, I usually get the same kind of comments for listening to J-Music in general. If they're not criticizing the high-pitched voices or happy melodies, they mock at the visual aesthetics of Visual bands I listen to. But well, I don't care about stuff like that, since I usually have a more diverse taste than that kind of people.
