Some previews for Utada's new album are up on her official site

http://www.utada.jp/uicl1088.html

I feel she's getting no promotion what so ever. It feels like Universal Music/Island Records/EMI is even trying anything. I honestly can't help but feel a horrible train wreak coming in terms of sales for this album. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Well, with or without promotion, I haven't really been impressed by ANYTHING related to this album thus far. The cover is a total mess, the samples suck so far, I personally hated her look in the Come Back to Me video and that whole song is kinda fail as well anyway. As of now, I don't think I'm even particularly looking forward to the album.

I'm a little mixed over the samples actually, I can't really tell what I think Sneeze I'm probably wait it out because the full versions tend to change my opinion.

well, i like CBTM, although i agree it's kinda generic. not a big fan of the PV though.... it was pretty boring, not much happened. hmm but it wasn't too bad looking.
i haven't heard any samples yet (i'll get to that), but it really does seem, like you guys say, that she's kinda been neglected. and yeah, the cover is just sad.... not just because it looks like it does, but because it's the same friggin' pic as for CBTM. >___>

*checks out samples*

OK, uh... yeah. not impressed. nuff said. Sad

There's a better sample of a new Utada song in the request thread.

I'm ... I'm growing iffy about the album. The song itself is a hit or miss. People who have heard it either love it or dislike it.

It's not a horrible song ... I think I wouldn't cringe at it so much if it wasn't for the lyrics. If you liked Easy Breeezy, you may like this new song. The only thing that kept me from liking the song was the lyrics.

All the samples have been released on her website. There are actually a few songs which have caught my ear, namely This One (Crying Like a Child), Automatic Part II and Me Muero. The other songs...it might take awhile to grow on me or I may just flat out refuse it even when I do hear the full song. Either way, I can't really see myself buying this album for awhile yet.

Out of all the english songs she has sung so far, my favourite still remains to be Blow My Whistle from the Rush Hour 2 soundtrack.

The album leaked last night and I've been listening to it today.

Sadly ... I didn't think any of Utada's albums could be worse than Exodus but this album may just make Exodus to look pretty good.

At least Exodus has some nice tracks on it.

There were songs on her new album that seriously make me cringe and question if they just decided to slap some song together and release an album. If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised but I'm disappointed. I would say mega disappointed but I wasn't expecting much to begin with.

The only songs I don't mind on this album is Come Back To Me, This One (Cryin' Like A Child), Apple and Cinnamon.

Some other songs have pretty good composition/arrangement but the lyrics totally kill the song for me.

At this point I just want to know which songs Utada wrote and which songs were written by others.

What is up with the horrible lyrics? Are the japanese lyrics that I don't understand as bad as these? Honestly, I can deal with the sound, I don't mind it, but the lyrics. They are so forced. And fake. And not what I would imagine Hikki to write. It is really too bad Sad SHe had a chance!

^ Nope, from the Japanese lyrics that I saw, none of them are like that.

And yeah, as sakuraangel said, the album was just terrible. I'm in the middle of writing a review for it but yeah, total disaster can pretty much sum up what the album is like. The only song I can enjoy is This One (Crying Like a Child) and I can see myself getting bored of it already. It's such a shame that it had to be like this. I wonder if my opinion will change about BoA's...

interview/segment with Utada

Hmm, looks like some hardcore fans are trying to defend this album. That's cool since everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I like Utada, I like her Japanese material, I even adored the stuff she did with Cubic U.

Because she did live in the US for a certain time, I'd say she's pretty fluent in English. Vocally she's amazing and I know full well she's capable of singing in English and she capable of doing cover songs in English as evidenced by her material on the Cubic U album "Precious" and when she did that Unplugged performance for MTV Japan.

Exodus wasn't one of her better albums since one could argue she was experimenting. I'll give her that. She did have some good tracks on there. But compared to her previous ones ... I personally felt it wasn't as good.

But there's many things about This Is The One that bothers me. The cover, the lack of marketing and promotion on this album (I mean seriously, I get we're in a recession but it just felt like her record company and her management didn't even TRY). There was much more promotion going on for Exodus that this album (IMO).

I also felt that criticism was brought up about lyrics when Exodus came out. I wonder if the writers or Utada considered that going into this album. One could argue she's trying to go for a more Western/mainstream pop approach but if I had never heard her before and listened to this album, I'd probably just laugh at certain tracks.

She talks about having matured and the events she's gone through (like her divorce) but the majority of these lyrics (with the exception of tracks like Apple and Cinnamon, This One (Cryin' Like A Child and maybe even Taking My Money Back ...) honestly don't speak that (at least from my point of view). Though I guess it would be silly to have a whole album on just that alone.

Maybe I'm disappointed because I know she's capable of doing better and I see that she has so much potential but I'm left feeling like this album was just slapped together for the sake of releasing an album.

I question if having her do some cover songs or collaborating with artist whom have vocals that suit her singing style will help ease her into the Western market (if her and her record company/management want to try again in the future).

I think if they ever want to promote her again (at least try) doing another MTV unplugged in North America or even Europe may help as it gives people whom haven't heard of her will be able to hear what she's capable live.

I have to agree with most of you - lyricwise, This Is The One is not one of Hikki's strongest. Some of the songs have a nice beat to them, but the lyrics just sound silly most of the time.

And when it comes to the promotion of the album, they've been promoting it really poorly. Part of the reasoning why the album was pushed back in the US was because it was supposed to "allow more time for promotion." Utada was on my local news channel the other morning, apparently... and I learned about it that afternoon?

I love Utada, I have for about seven years now, and I still like This Is The One, even if it isn't up to par with her other albums. But, again, like most of the rest of you guys, I think maybe she needs better people promoting her album.

I personally like FYI - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Automatic Part II, myself... FYI because it's pretty and APII because it's fun to dance too... but I may be alone in my opinion...[/b]

I forgot the exact Japanese title but it means "Memories from my 9 year old self"
Sounds like a ballad to me. Tongue

YAY! New single!

I've decided I don't particularly like the album. I only like a handful of songs, and I have to be in the right mood to listen to them, otherwise they bore me. I sort of wish she had a pop album that was more experimental, or varied in sound, at least.

Utada has canceled her US events because of a severe illness. She has posted on her official website (http://www.u3music.com/message/index.php?m=1&d=2009051219252e.xml):

To my fans in America!
5.12(Tue) 19:25

I suppose a lot of you have heard already; I've had to cancel the instore events that were scheduled for this week.

The reason is, I'm sick. I came down with a case of "peritonsillitis"---it's basically a more severe form of tonsillitis, in which the area around the tonsils get badly swollen as well.

This happens this to me once or twice a year, when I'm extremely tired and my immune system gets in bad shape.

I was in bed this past week, making daily trips to the hospital to get intravenous administration of hardcore medication, and now I'm near the end of the recovering stage, but the problem with this condition is that I have to be very careful until it is completely take care of, as it tends to easily come back.

It was decided that I'm in no shape to be traveling and working for a while.

I'm trying to rest as much as possible, relax a little and take it easy.

I apologize to my fans who were looking forward to the events, and to everyone involved with organizing these events.

Surprised Surprised Surprised

One of my friends is a big fan of Utada's work...
I just love a couple of her songs, but because of my friend I heard her new album and the first thing I noticed was that the lyrics were kind of weird to me
I mean, I was totally shocked when I listened something like "no panties on,
did I turn you on?" and stuff like that Laughing ...It makes me think "Did someone else wrote the whole album?"...But (I don't know why) suddenly I started singing "me muero" "apple and cinnamon" and "come back to me" Laughing maybe because I'm not a native speaker XD and I don't really care about the meaning of the songs

By the way. I agreed with all about the cover... The company should put more effort on it...
