I know that most people using IE is susceptible to a very popular spyware called CoolWebSearch. I'm not asking you to use Firefox for no reasons, there's indeed a lot of loopholes in IE which you can't do much about. I'm not sure if the latest IE are still susceptible to this spyware attack or not, but using Firefox is definitely safer.
My advice to keep your computer spyware free is as follow:
1. Keep you Windows updated by turning on auto update (get SP2 if possible)
2. Install spyware cleaner like Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster
3. Use a secure browser like Firefox
4. Setup a personal firewall, like ZoneAlarm, Sygate
5. Do not download suspicious files from the internet, open only the file you trust
Do remember to keep updating your spyware definition and program, possibly daily or weekly. Also, try not to install program randomly. Read reviews and search the web to decide if the program is spyware bundled. Program such as Kazaa is bundled with spyware. |

my recommendation:
Antispyware - Webroot Spysweeper (Number 1 Anti spyware), Adware SE Pro, Spyware Detective, Max Secure antispyware
firewall - Outpost Firewall, Zonealarm,
antivirus: Kaspersky Personal pro, Nod32
and do not Update via windows, it is crap in my opnion, yeah sure they keep securing to punch away network whole but that is useless, because what hacker do is that they can easly break the network via with some special tool, and it means all updates that u hade done are totally useless |

I don't think you have a good idea what service pack is for. They don't release it for no reason (obviously), you can read some detail about SP2 here. fyi, some of the internet worms affects only Windows that does not have SP2 installed.
Quote: If you've disabled Automatic Updates in your copy of Windows XP, we suggest you turn it on now. Once you install SP2, it too will urge you to turn on Automatic Updates. You can set Automatic Updates to do its magic at a given time each day -- a good idea, given what CNET security expert Robert Vamosi calls the Eschelbeck Theory. Within the first month of any security flaw going public, a rain of worms and Trojan horses flood the Internet to take advantage of that flaw. The faster you fix the flaw, the safer you'll be -- and the safer we'll all be since the worms won't spread
You can read the full articles here. zetaf, it's not about protecting yourself against hacker, it's about protecting yourself from worms and virus that does damage to your system. How often do you get a professional hacker trying to hack innocent people like you? If they (the hacker) are that good, bank and online store will be their target. |

That is so true. For people who have SP1 go get SP2 or else you'll get something called the sasser worm. Trust me, you'll thank me for warning you, sasser worm is nothing fun, for I have experienced it myself. This worm crashs your computer everytime you got online for boardband users. |

| Yeah, I use firefox on my PC. I tell my mom to install it on the other Windows computer in the house, but she won't listen. She swears on IE. I even showed her the "proof" that IE was crap, but she just exclaimed that those were made up and said that the pop ups and junk was because I installed firefox on my PC. Meanwhile, my comp is is pop up-less AND is working faster with the new browser, while the others are crap. And, I have ad-aware, and I'm testing this anti-spam software from Windows until December because then they'll have the commercial release out. And, I'm firewalled. I can't stand IE now, I'm so used to firefox and the tabbed browsing, etc. It's so much easier. Convenient AND safer. It's like Safari. |

^Yeah, I just got my 12" PowerBook on Saturday I've always liked Macs better, so I'm a little biased. I guess it's because I learned all the basic computer skills on a Mac, so yeah. I really like how the platform is setup and everything, it just makes more sense to me. My mom swears by Dell, but she doesn't know that on a test b/w my baby and a Dell, Dell was 73% less efficient. That woman is just too stubborn. Anyway, the rest of my family seems to be Mac converts after seeing this baby in action. Really love, I'm saving money for a desktop now. I haven't even touched my PC since I've gotten this, and I doubt I will any time soon.
I've heard of Linux since forever, but I never actually SEEN a Linux comp. Is it completely different from Mac and PC interfaces? |

Yes, unless you chose to purchase Ad-Aware Pro. |

Another recommendation would be Spybot: Search and Destory. It's best to have more than one spyware program becuase one spyware program won't be able to detect all the spywares on your computer. I'd say have two are three spyware programs on your computer to be safe, that way if one program can't detect a certain spyware, maybe the others will . |
