The new saviour of Japanese music industry, the first artist whose song was downloaded more than 1 million times as cellphone incoming ringtone, Ai Otsuka

For the first time in the history of Japanese music and cell phone industry, cell phone ring tone was downloaded for more than 1 million times! The single released by Ai Otsuka near the end of last year, "Sakuranbo", has broken the record and achieve the status of having more than 1 million download through cell phones to be used as incoming ring tone. If we assume each download costs 105 yen, then the sales of "Sakuranbo", on top of the single sales, has gained another extra 100 million yen. While the current Japanese recording industry is in a depression, the popularity of ring tone download made possible by Ai Otsuka has certainly given new hopes to the whole industry, and Ai Otsuka can be considered as the new saviour of the Japanese music industry!

Debuted for less than a year, multi-talented composer/singer Ai Otsuka released her first album "LOVE PUNCH" this March. So far, more than 0.7 million of of this album have been sold. "Sakuranbo" was released last year and it has achieved more than 0.54 million in sales. The "Sakuranbo" ring tone broke the 1 million milestone on the 19th this month. Not only has Ai Otsuka contributed lots of revenue for her company, avex, the success of "Sakuranbo" ring tone has stimulated the growth of ring tone download services and increased the percentage of internet subscribers among cell phone users.

The cell phone industry in Japan started incoming ring tone download service in December 2002. So far, about 15 million cell phones have this feature built-in. This correspond to about 1 every 15 cell phones that has "Sakuranbo" as its incoming ring tone. The popularity of incoming ring tone has brought in new business chances to the music industry. In the past, ring tone are capable of playing only melody so only composer and lyricist can get royalty. Now, the incoming ring tone has CD quality thus the record company can earn royalty from it as well. Many big record company in Japan collectively invested on new company that provides music service to cell phones. Right now, there are 15 recording companies that work with mobile service provider "au" to provide music download service for cell phone through special websites.

In the past, a single costs about 1000 yen, even if 1 million copies are sold, it will bring in total sales of 1 billion yen. After deducting the commission of CD shops, the material costs, the package fee etc., the final revenue is actually quite limited. However, for the new cell phone music download service introduced recently, much of the intermediate cost is eliminated, thus for recording companies this appears to give a better earning ratio. For someone like Ai Otsuka, not only is the single sales going extremely well, the high popularity of her incoming ring tone download definitely makes her the new saviour of the music industry! "Happy Days", the new single released by Ai Otsuka this month, has also achieved great sales in ring tone download, seems like breaking her own 1 million downloads record can be achieved in the near future. Due to the high popularity of Ai Otsuka's song in the music download industry, her upcoming single "Kingyo Hanabi", which is scheduled to be released in August, will be made available by as early as July via music download service for cell phones. The influence of Ai Otsuka on the music and cell phone industry can be easily seen from this!

This year, in Japan, everything about summer is Ai Otsuka

The first two singles of the year have successfully entered Top 10 of Oricon Chart. First album "LOVE PUNCH" has sold more than 700,000 copies; the infamous "Sakuranbo" currently became the first ever to have cell phone downloads reaching one million mark.

Hasn't debuted for a full year, Ai Otsuka surely is Jpop's most "loved" new artist. With the glorious records made during the first half of the year, Ai Otsuka has started the second half of the year aggressively. She released "Happy Days" in the beginning of July, at the end of August, Ai Otsuka has, again, released a new single "Kingyo Hanabi". Coincidentally, these two singles represent, respectively, the happy feeling of summer and the melancholies as the end of summer draws near.

Summer is a special season in Japan. Everyone wants to do something memorable during summer. Thus, numerous artists have made songs celebrating the summer season. However, the epitome of this summer’s music artists unquestionably has to be Ai Otsuka. As the summer begins, Ai Otsuka released “Happy Days”; throughout the entire season, Ai Otsuka attended “a-nation ‘04” live concerts in Japan. As summer ends in August, Ai Otsuka released “Kingyo Hanabi”, a ballad that describes summer love’s short length and its beauty.

What’s the meaning behind the name “Kingyo Hanabi”? According to Ai Otsuka, She remembers the “kingyos” she often got during summer festivals. She took them home happily but they died shortly afterward. “Hanabi” is the essential during summer festivals. The fireworks are stunningly beautiful but they disappear quickly in a short period of time. “Kingyos” and “Hanabi” are the most important representations of summer, yet, short lasting. But it also happens to be the kind of feeling she wants to convey. The lyrics are especially abstract, simple and poetic. Even if unaccompanied by music, it is a piece of work that Ai Otsuka herself is very proud of.

The music video for “Kingyo Hanabi” is extremely attractive. In the video, Ai Otsuka sits in the sea, the bubbles and fireworks surrounding her reminded people of the story of the Little Mermaid, who turned into bubbles at the end of the story.

In addition, “Coco-natsu vacation”, another song featured in this single is totally different in style comparing to “Kingyo Hanabi”. It is the feeling of Caribbean, like dancing wildly in a summer night; the joy of listening to this song makes people relax. Don’t miss out on theses two great songs! Let Ai Otsuka be with you for the rest of the precious summer time!

Hehe, anyway, surprised to see that Otsuka Ai is a hit even all the way in Taiwan...I thought there was a sort of grudge between the countries due to Japan overtaking them back in WWII?? Or maybe they are already over it...hope so. World Peace Giggle
